I tried this a couple of days ago instead of french curls & dips & it totally hit the spot! im still a bit sore, does this exercise target a different area of the triceps in comparison to say..... tricep dips?
I was looking for someone who could do it correctly on here. thank you very much. I was looking for something to replace my overhead french curls, I am going heaveyer and dont want to risk injuring my shoulder area. again thanks ^^
i think if u feel a risk of injury you should not increase weight.
this is a good vid but i found out very soon that its very hard to do- my elbows are running in all directions. only way i can do this is with a very close grip on the ez bar.
nice. I have 17 inch arms and I'm seventeen. been lifting for a while. with the french press I always have trouble keeping my elbows from not shaking. maybe i go to heavy hehe. I think i got most of my mass from pushdowns though but you need a cable for that.
jesus people, this is a good video. yeah, if you put 200 lbs on each side of the bar and do this excercise, you'll probably fuck ur elbows. but with a normal weight for your strength, this lift is perfectly safe.
plus i like how people just say "that's wrong" and don't tell scoob what is wrong about it other than the name. shows how much they really know
for a mass building routine, you should rest until you're not huffing and puffing anymore, then you know there's enough oxygen in your blood to do another set.
If this method of exercising triceps is "wrong", I will remove this video immediately. Is there a physical therapist or orthopedic surgeon out there who can shed some light on this or provide some references? Personally I have been using this for two decades with good results and no injuries, am I missing something????
IMHO "Muscle & Fitness" magazine rates only slightly above the National Enquirer in their scientific credentials and responsible journalism. Again, I am interested in learning here. Are there any scientific studies or research that documents that your way is "correct" and my way is "wrong"?
To repeat, he's got it wrong. Also in regards to doing them slowly. Also completely wrong to stress this elbow positioning business or having to keep them still-do this exercise right, to behind the head and you'll see the difference.
What do you mean by "wrong". Do you mean that this method of doing the exercise is ineffective or do you mean that it is dangerous? If the former, I'm not too worried as I have 19" arms and my triceps development is proportional to the rest of by physique. If it is the latter, it is possible I have just been lucky but I've been doing this for over two decades without injury. Please explain.
He's doing this incorrectly, like many others who don't know the difference, while claiming to instruct others. The more effective form is to lower BEHIND the head, all the way down. He doesn't understand the difference or the fact that this isn't as effective or that's it's also harder on the elbows. Also, elbow positioning isn't that important, don't worry about it.
Even after 23 years of bodybuilding, I'm still learning. You say that my form is "incorrect", on what are you basing this? Are you a physical therapist or orthopedic surgeon? What is the scientific reason this is "incorrect"? I've been using this exercise for two decades with good results and no injuries, am I missing something?
ur missing nothing. its a good exercise, fuck the haters. however, have u seen Arnold perform this? He states how the french press may be better b/c after the weight is pressed up, it's on an angle, so there is constant tension on the muscle, it's not resting while your elbow is in the locked position.
Very helpful, I tried the exercise today. Could you tell me something about bicep building-if I want to train for size is it better to do 1-2 rep sets with a weight I can barely do and have to cheat on, or do full 10 rep sets of a smaller weight? thanks heaps

when the weight goes up all the pressure stays on ur joints hte key is to keep the pressure on the triceps the whole time.. =D

does the amount of time between sets matter???

That's NOT a french press. A french press involves the barbell being lowered behind the head. That's a lying tricep extension, aka "skull crusher".

I disagree, you don't have to worry as much about straining your joints if you don't try to throw more weight than you can handle with poor form.
