Bono is guilt ridden and unable to let go of his pain, even though his dead friend would want that.The first line he is speaking to his friend to let him know he NOW understands what he was going through. To let it go and so to fade away'(act of heroin into the vein) 'To let it go and so find away' (Bono telling his friend he is trying to let it go but now that he understand hes sleepless)

@dawnrunsamok, I have always believed he is singing 'flag' in this context: 'True colors fly in blue and black' = the colors of a local flag flown regularly. 'blue silken sky' is a Dublin Bono remembers before heroin took control. 'Burning Flag' is a lyrical desecration, politically charged, aimed at the lack of local efforts to rid the city of a drug that took his friends life(and many others).

I could be off but it seems he is upset that his neighbors and peers who fly the same colors/flag sit by as he views this epidemic through tear stained eyes as he mourns his loss.I cannot verify this but its rumored Bono has openly criticized local politicians and those fortunate or in a position to help for ignoring the local H problem. What is interesting is the word 'Flak' can mean many things(opposition,aircraft fire,condemnation,disapproval ).That and he also sounds like he is saying flak

@dawnrunsamok thank you for the kind words. Im not immune to rants however when it comes to lyrics, there is no right or wrong. Music is something we cannot touch yet feel. I have often felt it is what separates us from animals. I have been near opiates and perhaps that is why i can express myself on this particular song. Prior to my addiction I found it interestingly odd how one could take a song about love and claim it was about heroin. Now i get it. Love and Heroin are the same.

@dawnrunsamok After just listening i had a thought. (fyi,I dont particularly like Bono as a person. Amazing artist, yes) Its my belief Bono was a user. How else could he describe heroin drawls as he does 'desolation in temptation etc..' and then say 'LET IT GO' can mean, heroin is the only cure for withdrawals, OR Heroin is the only cure for the guilt he feels, he speaks 1st person. 'and so find a way to let it go' is the search for a cure. 'and so to fade away' may be the answer.

I remember listening to the unforgettable fire in the middle of a winters night, I was in a dingey box room on the wrong side of the tracks, hadnt slept for 3 days and nights. Was feeling desperate and suicidal, this song gave me faith. Faith enough to pray. U2 are the kind of band that can speak to you on a very emotional and spiritual level. They're more than just another rock band.
