CONTINUED FROM LAST POSTING....So anyway, I was crying and holding my knees up to my chest as I was sitting on my cold, hardwood floor-swaying back and forth, rocking myself to comfort myself, all while singing this absolutley beautiful song to myself. My later to be husband, Michael told me that at the very moment that he heard me singing this song was the exact moment that he was to fall in love with me.We began dating in Oct.1998,got married- May 24,2004.after 3 kids later, were still together!
This is such a TRULLY AMAZING song. Thanks for the lyrics! A sie note that you all should know-this is actually the very song that was going on at the very moment that my husband fell in love with me. So the story goes, I was sitting down on the floor of the hallway to my old tiny studio apartment that I was living at in 1998, and I was crying and to comfort myself I started to lightly sing this song to myself, thinking that nobody could hear me because I had 2 others@my apt. CONTINUED......
suspectVandal, that's an awesome story, thank u 4 sharing. Glad that the lyrics and music spoke to u on some level, enough to pull u out of that funk and live, instead of go ahead and give in to those suicidal thoughts.
All y'all should just enjoy a good tune - wrong side of tracks, it spoke to me, is it about heroin.......OR could it simply be that he'd been for an Ingrid, run out of toilet paper & was talking about using the newspaper he was reading instead of his hand - desolation, temptation...Jeezz, they are JUST a good rock band.
I bet the Spice Girls don't get all this pseudo-cerebral headbanging....
Thanks for posting. Beautiful song with meaning. Their early stuff really takes me back at least 25 years as if it were yesterday. I can remember where I was, my teachers, my classmates and my activities that I was involved with. It's amazing how their songs and music can have that kind of effect on someone..
i love this song u2 are actually a band who have meaning who ever doesnt understand that then they have no taste in meaningfull music! - love it in taking lives film realy fit in...
Responses are cool on this thread, I also see it as Bono's personal journey , his personal guilt at feeling anger, upset, disgust as someone's decision to commit suicide. His Catholic upbringing informs his feelings about suicide and he wants to let it go, because his friend deserves it.
this song is about heroin addiction. sooo sad how people have no lives and have to waste it by turning their beautiful faces into creeping nightmares! 0.o
@10nodder its actually both. His friend was addicted to Heroin and he is speaking to him through this song. Bono is guilt ridden and unable to let go of his pain, even though his dead friend would want that. The first line he is speaking to his friend to let him know he NOW understands what he was going through. To let it go and so to fade away'(act of heroin into the vein) 'To let it go and so find away' (Bono telling his friend he is trying to let it go but now that he understand hes sleepless)
@Biltospill, Thank You. I was trying to think of some way to politely address those who felt compelled to correct the excellently rendered lyrics by Armortec90. And you've already done it very eloquently. You spoke to heart of the matter by explaining that both resonate deeply, and are interchangeable.
However since I love this particular line, I have to question...do you think it's "Through silken sky and burning flak"? Rather than "flag"?
Regardless, @Armortec90, Thank You and Great job!
@dawnrunsamok, I have always believed he is singing 'flag' in this context: 'True colors fly in blue and black' = the colors of a local flag flown regularly. 'blue silken sky' is a Dublin Bono remembers before heroin took control. 'Burning Flag' is a lyrical desecration, politically charged, aimed at the lack of local efforts to rid the city of a drug that took his friends life(and many others).
I could be off but it seems he is upset that his neighbors and peers who fly the same colors/flag sit by as he views this epidemic through tear stained eyes as he mourns his loss.I cannot verify this but its rumored Bono has openly criticized local politicians and those fortunate or in a position to help for ignoring the local H problem. What is interesting is the word 'Flak' can mean many things(opposition, aircraft fire, condemnation, disapproval ).That and he also sounds like he is saying flak
@Biltospill, It's refreshing to have a friendly conversation here in comment wasteland. Clearly you know much about this extraordinary band, and the pressures which inform their music. Thank you for the solid info, it clears up many questions I've had about this song.
Having lost good friends to H, it resonates very deeply for me.
As you point out, flak has many meanings; and yes, it does sound like he's singing it, but I have to agree that flag is more likely, given the context. Thanks Again!
@dawnrunsamok thank you for the kind words. Im not immune to rants however when it comes to lyrics, there is no right or wrong. Music is something we cannot touch yet feel. I have often felt it is what separates us from animals. I have been near opiates and perhaps that is why i can express myself on this particular song. Prior to my addiction I found it interestingly odd how one could take a song about love and claim it was about heroin. Now i get it. Love and Heroin are the same.
@dawnrunsamok After just listening i had a thought. (fyi,I dont particularly like Bono as a person. Amazing artist, yes) Its my belief Bono was a user. How else could he describe heroin drawls as he does 'desolation in temptation etc..' and then say 'LET IT GO' can mean, heroin is the only cure for withdrawals, OR Heroin is the only cure for the guilt he feels, he speaks 1st person. 'and so find a way to let it go' is the search for a cure. 'and so to fade away' may be the answer.
I remember listening to the unforgettable fire in the middle of a winters night, I was in a dingey box room on the wrong side of the tracks, hadnt slept for 3 days and nights. Was feeling desperate and suicidal, this song gave me faith. Faith enough to pray. U2 are the kind of band that can speak to you on a very emotional and spiritual level. They're more than just another rock band.
@suspectVandal Great testomany,,, i was a homeless alcoholic with 6 months to a year left to live if i carried on drinking, i was walking the streets with my bag of clothes and a bottle of sherry singing Stuck in a moment wich inspired me to ask God for help and to cut my testomany by 99% i am 5 years sober, and i forfilled my dream by going to see U2 in 2009 in Sheffield :)
@suspectVandal Thanks for sharing your story. This is a most powerful song and a powerful message. There is no doubt in my mind that prayers are answered. We have to come with an open heart and mind to receive whatever the response might be. Good for you.
I'm French my english is not so good but I'm sure about "condemnation". I just listen the song about 2 minutes ago, and I'm 100% sure that the word is "condemnation".
My fave song off all time this song always takes me to a safe place it was written for me,if i didnt find this song i would have killed myself when i was 16 in 85 .
@21Rocks if you understand the song it doesnt matter if its 'fade' or 'find' It means the same thing. line 1. 'To let it go' (Heroin into the vein) 'and so to find away' (find away to 'fade away') line 2. 'To let it go' (to rid himself of the guilt being so close to someone who was in such despair and do nothing) 'and so find away' ('find away' to let it go but he is so aware now its impossible or 'fade away' meaning the thought of letting go is overcome by his guilt)
One of my favorite songs by U2, beautiful. Everytime I feel bad I listen to it and brings such joy in my life. " If I could throw this lifeless life into the wind, leave this heart of clay, see you walk , walk away..If I could through myself set your spirit free, I'd lead your heart away, see you break, break away". Thanks U2.
For some reason this was one of my favorite songs because it was depressing and heartbreaking, not uplifting. But I can see it that way too. That's what's great about music, people can interpret it differently :)
The subject of the song One Tree Hill (Greg Carrol) was a Maori roadie for u2 who was killed in a motorcycle accident in Dublin city center. This song is not about him.
Here is what was said at the concert in Rome on the 27/5/1987 ''The Joshua Tree Tour''
I wrote this song about a city, A city I grew up in,Sometimes when you write a song you dont know what your going to write about, I wrote this song for a friend of mine,Who fell in love with a VERY dangerous drug,That drug was called Hero*n,This song is called ''BAD'' (Unquote)
Yes a Great song, can I also add and not to be a smart ass told you so person, but kboo756 you are correct when you say it was for a friend and mhmmXitsXKelly Yes the song One Tree Hill is for Bono's friend (Greg Carrol) but this song to was for a friend and on his 21st birthday other friends thought they would do him a favour on his birthday and bought him heroin, which sadly made it his last birthday as he died, bono says this at a concert in Rome at the start of ''BAD'' daviem1166
the one bout his friend who died is One Tree Hill this one is bout how heroine was indroduced to kids in Ireland thats y the lines r "if i could yk i would if i could let it go" im readin a book called U2 by U2 and if has a bunch of stuff bout them
