It's a blessing to be fortunate to have someone that is both smart and can communicate on different levels. My Father was very knowledgeable of science, and math, etc. but he was not knowledgeable on teaching or explaining things to children...or to anyone really. The saying "Those who do, do and those who cant teach" was applicable to my father but not to someone like Richard Feynman. As a consequence i went to college for art and music and read "Six Easy Pieces" to relax at the end of the day.
I read a book about Feynman and on the day he was born his Father said "If it's a boy he is going to be a Scientist!". So his mind was nurtured and trained since Day 1!
@Smorphine no, but raising a nobel laureate son and being a major (perhaps pivotal) influence on that boy's desire to understand the universe does say a lot about Feynman's father, don't you think?
My father stopped talking to me at age 12, I think he got tired of being a father, and our conversations were limited to the exchange of at most two sentences. I think that great people have great fathers. I did not .., (
@madwilliamflint it's from a documentary called "the pleasure of finding things out" there are also some other great interviews that he does that are in 10min segments its calld "Fun to Imagine"
His joy of life and constant wonder in everything around him is completely infectious. His positive views of everything give other people hope and gets people to look at their environment in a different way. THAT is why Feynman is a person many people could and do benefit from, by taking a page out of his book.
This is a clip I was looking for. A beatiful illustration of superficial knowledge and deep understanding in Feynman's unique style. Can't get tired of quoting this story!!!
Yes Richard Feynman was one of the coolest physicists of all times - and my personal favorite!
Besides being a wonderful physicist, Mr. Feynman was a wonderful person! What a joy is to watch him talking!! The world is a better place since he lived in it...
Yes, he did. He was a young man and he believed that he was helping his country to defend against nazis. A most legitimate idea, don't you think? What happened in Hiroshima and later was not the matter of any physicist.
ok, ok, i was just making the comment that men are not in control here, and that he himself said that he became very depressed after he realised what those nukes he helped build could do to our world.
And of course I agree, I think Feynman is the coolest physicist of the 20th century.
i wish my dad was like that.

@Smorphine I don't understand why you need to contort that quote into some sexist remark.

@twg20101 And if it's a woman, she'll be part of the cleaning staff? That doesn't say much about Feynman's father actually...

I've been having some trouble grasping what was meant by inertia until I saw this clip. What an amazing man.

There you have it. How can you have a child like Feynman? (I know you all want to) Be a cool father like his was.

My dad tries to teach me the same lessons, but he's so busy nowadays. It gets rather lonely.

How much that his father meant to Feynman is so obvious from this clip.

@shredjoe1 The pang of yearning at the end of the video almost brought a tear to my eye.

@shredjoe1" Lovely interesting discussions". That says a lot.

What is this clip from? Is the whole thing available? I'm going nuts watching this interview in 2 and 3 minute clips.

User "geoffmthomas" has uploaded these. Search "Richard Feynman Interview #1". Also, try "Feynman Fun to Imagine" for another great set.

It's a BBC Horizon interview from 1981. I don't know if it's available on DVD.

This is my favorite part of the interview.
With such a father one is predestined to become a physicist!

What a great man. His father, I mean. (And of course him, but we wouldn't have him without his father.)

Wow, what's with all the negativity here? To paraphrase Feynman, anyone who can't see a wonderful being here has no soul.
