You are joking, right? One is a stunningly beautiful mediaeval city that ranks amongst the most culturally important in the world in terms of the people who have lived in Oxford over the years, whereas Manchester, er, doesn't.
@THthefirst I live not too far from Manchester and it is a depressing shithole. The only good thing about it that it has an International airport. Also the people there are not freindly at all.
@andrewbarrett42 You may just not like it, that's your opinion, it's not fact. You don't know all the people there so can't speak for them. I agree it's not an attractive city vs. Oxford, though a lot of money has been pumped into the centre and it's better than it was, but it is important to England's history because the industrial revolution started there and without that there would have been no empire.
I must correct you about Oxford (which I have visited) being 'home to the academic elite, not only of Great Britain, but of the entire world'.Cambridge is regarded as (at least) its equal and is certainly its superior in the sciences. (if you think industrial Oxford is beautiful, you should see Cambridge- or Durham actually). Also, other British universities have students with grades that are just as high for some subjects.I studied at York University and have relatives in Manchester by the way.
@Picnicl Agree the two unis are both as good as each other, but Oxford is a much bigger city and has more going on than the uni. Cambridge is considerably smaller.
Manchester alongside Oxford?!!!

@THthefirst Manchester is a grim horrable city.

@andrewbarrett42 Indeed, it is almost as horrible as your spelling of the word.
Manchester I suppose represents the industrial history of England.
