Wow a real live Kookaburra! I've heard of them, but I never seen one. Of coarse, I don't live in Austraila, but we do have it's kingfisher relatives here in Texas, USA.
@vyperspit yeah our kookaburras are lovely birds ,we have two types, the laughing(on the video) and the blue winged kookaburra, kookaburras are all around australia as they are not fussy eaters, they are just as happy eating meat pie as they are eating a pisonous snake or spider ,they are like you mentioned just big king fishers.i don't know anything about your kingfishers but i bet they are just as beautiful and interesting as ours.Their laugh is really loud!
awsome i feed a family of 4 kookas that come every day, 2 of them are really tame and will jump on my hand when i feed them. trying to get a vid of 1 of t hem sitting on my hand while doing the full kooka call, there is a rival group near by that keeps coming into there territory so i often here them from differant palces around my house threatening each other lol.
The Kookaburra is like a proud and grumpy old man. First he sits in the middle of all the birds, looking away with his beak pointed upwards. Later on he was like " Scram you darned lorikeets!"... You know what I mean. LOL. I think that the Kookaburra is such a remarkable and yet adorable creature. Love them!
You're so lucky to have such beautiful birds hang around in your back porch. We just have sparrows and the occasional hummingbird. Cute, but just plain.
@darktard It's tempting because he is a cuddly roly-poly fellow but you have to be careful. Just as he is at his cutest, he can decide to give you a quick nip with that VERY intimidating beak! Although as you can tell from the lori's reactions he's more bluff and bluster than real action.
@Beanick Idk I'd probably take my chances anyways... something like what a pet owner would do with a cat and then end up getting scratched or accidentally bitten =)
That kukaburra is so cool just hanging out relaxed like that. Most wild birds are always on guard. I thought they were wonderful till I found out they ate birds, yuck!
I cant imagine a bunch of wild cockatoos/correllas in the area. I think they would destroy everything in site like a plague of locusts. We dont have birds like that in the US, although you can have a woodpecker peck on the siding of ur house. Some places have deer problems, now they can eat all ur plants.
That is sooo cool the Kukaburra is just hanging out there chillin letting you film him. Is that a pet? Aren't you afraid the corrella will decide to munch ur deck? I have one as a pet, and if I let him loose, he would decide to see if the deck wood would make nice really big splinters. lol. That kukaburra is 2 cool!
@2Ryled that kookaburra is a completely wild bird, but has become kind of a pet as he hangs around a lot. He has a nice gentle disposition - most of the time! You are right about the corellas, the same applies to big cockatoos and galahs. They all like to sharpen their beaks on my timber house so I normally shoo them away. But I do allow them to hang around to make brief cameo appearances in my videos!
@holmsatlarge got some nice video of galahs today. They were bossing the loris around but I let them stay to get good shots. Will upload in the next few days. Happy Holidays!
I'll see if I can get some shots of galahs. They come around quite a bit but they scare the loris away so I normally discourage them. They also chew on the house. They are a medium sized, pale pink bird which makes an unattractive screech.
Australia has the most incredible wildlife! I can only imagine a flock of these wonderful birds in my garden! Alas, I live in Toronto, Canada and the only lory I can feed is my own, my Nikki. I just love your wonderful videos!
@Beanick Yes, I really do love your wonderful videos! Nikki loves them too! Birds are so incredible! I have been a bird lover my entire life. The birds in Australia are so beautiful! I have a bird feeder and mostly i get the little sparrows. Imagine having lories in your garden!! Wow. At least i have my beautiful Nikki! She is one of the great joys of my life! Love my birds! Thanks for the videos!
@holmsatlarge Thanks for the feedback I'll have to try to make a new bird video soon and post. Maybe try to show their personalities a bit more. I agree about birds. I've lived with these guys around me for many years and NEVER tire of their antics. I feel VERY privileged to have them visit each day, and any time we have a visitor especially from overseas they are captivated. Wonderful to hear your little Nikki brings you so much joy, I fully understand!!
@Mcstooger in the wild where diet is varied with plenty of pollen and nectar sources, and the birds can do a lot of fast free flying, a little sunflower seed in the diet is OK. But for pet birds it's too many calories because they don't have sufficient opportunity to burn off all that high energy food. Note that as with human diets, opinions vary on this particular subject!
@Mcstooger I do too. My bird has a special lory kibble and nectar powder. I also feed her fresh fruit but no avacado as it is deadly to them. They are wonderful pets! My bird is 2 and her name is Nikki. She is a green naped lory.
you have such a wonderful back yard i am so jelous right now lol its nice to see that there are still kookaburra's in tn the wild. you are so lucky to be able to see them in the wild,
Beautiful video! I couldn't believe that you could just reach out and touch that kookaburra. It looked like the kookaburra wanted to sit listen to the music, but the lories were chattering too much!
@muppetspuppets thanks for the comment! I think because my house is high off the ground they feel safe here. It sounds unbelievable but all I have to do is whistle and birds fly in from all directions, particularly butcher birds and lorikeets.
Absolutely amazing! Not your normal back yard birdies here in the states! Thanks for sharing them!

All we have here in my backyard are crows, sparrows and the occasional starling. The U.S. doesn't have any cool birds unless you count the Raven. :(
