This is the double bass (bass viol, kontrabass, etc.) part to the piece you are hearing. It allows student bassists and young professionals to hear an excellent group play the piece at a temp0 that one might be expected to play the piece at an audition for a Baroque orchestra. Being able to follow the part and listen to a professional play helps establish the style and lets you hear the other parts being played so that you can convey the proper style and integration of your part with others.
