  • continued: Poodles are considered a retriever-type dog in terms of their original function. Many dog experts think the poodle was developed in Germany as a waterfowl retriever and to retrieve arrows that fell into the water while duck hunting. The original poodle was the standard, and there were originally two types, which have since diverged. One is the water poodle, which became the standard poodle and the miniature and toy poodles. The other type is the sheep poodle, a herding dog.

  • What's interesting to me is that both Labradoodles and Goldendoodles resemble the old Rough Water dog-- a large breed of water dog that was found throughout Northern Europe. It is probably the ancestor of the poodle, and perhaps had a role in the development some of the water spaniels and retrievers. There were once many types of water spaniel (we have two left, unless one counts the Tasmanian spaniel and the Boykin). The rest of the water spaniels were absorbed into retrievers.
