Eric Fletcher Waters, father of Pink Floyd band member Roger Waters, who wrote the song "When the Tigers Broke Free" about the attack. (A common misconception is that the company Eric Waters served was called "C" when in reality he was in company "Z", 8th Battalion. There is no Company C in the 8th Battalion.
"In 1988 C Company joined 8th (Volunteer) Battalion The Queen's Fusiliers on its formation as one of three rifle companies and is now titled C (City of London Fusiliers) Company, The London Regiment."
@ev0lve Was Eric Rogers serving in Company C when he was killed at the Anzio Bridgehead? Or was he assigned to Company Z? I think the point was quite clear, it was not Company "C" at Anzio.
Rogers father Eric Waters was in company Z of the Royal Fusiliers and was killed when the company was ordered to hold a bridgehead that German Tiger tanks were assaulting.

Very Moving. I have to admit, I get teary-eyed every time I watch Pink putting on hism daddy's cap with Waters mournful wailing of how the high command "took my daddy from me". Having lost my father, it is especially moving. One of a few damn songs that as Bowie said can make me "break down and cry".

This might be the best song Waters ever wrote because it is a true story of how his father and every other man in his company were killed in a no win situation in WW2 due to high command incompetence.
I played guitar in a band that played original songs for well over 7 years, in a town that wanted to hear covers. I played Fender Stratocastor for most of those years. The single best, most infatuating compliment I ever received was, I sounded like David Gilmore. I LOVED hearing when people would compare me to Mr. Gilmore. Long live the Floyd
@ev0lve it is Z, look up Eric Fletcher Waters (Rodger Waters Father) in Wikipedia , he served in company Z. Company C did not see any action that day.
@ev0lve No, it was company Z, the song is about how Roger Waters father was killed in the war, He served in the Royal Fusiliers, company Z. They were ordered to hold a bridgehead against an advancing column of German Tiger tanks, (When the Tigers broke free.) The letter would be spoken as zed. But for the song the letter Z rhymes with the line, "No one survived from the Royal Fusiliers, Company Z." The person who put the lyrics up made a mistake, and also spelled Fusiliers wrong.
i know full well what the song is about. my guess is that you got your information from Wikipedia. it's not sourced there, and you are wrong. there was no company "Z" which you can see for your trite little self on the british army's website.
@ev0lve If you have the DVD of The Wall, you can listen to the commentary, and hear Roger Waters talk about how the death of his father in February 1944 that's where I heard it.
I vivdly remembered this song and this scene when I saw the movie in theatres way back when and was wildly disappointed when it wasn't included on the album ...It has since been added to the The Final Cut (Longer version than in the movie and is just AWESOME btw)...but it was an integral song to the theme of The Wall and it still amazes me that it was left out ...The pain is just palpatable ..."That's when the High Command took my Daddy from me." ....Amazing!!!! Thanks for the post...
yes, it was at the beginning of the movie, and explains what happened to Pink's father. "It was just before dawn, One miserable morning in Black '44, When the forward commander, was told to sit tight, when he asked that his men be withdrawn. And the generals gave thanks as the other ranks, held back the enemy tanks, for a while. And the Anzio Bridgehead, was held for the price, of a few hundred ordinary lives..." Then, Tigers part2 starts a little later in the movie, which is this clip.
@m3rktokes yes, I've just put it on YouTube, watch My Video's, I like to hear your comments, on all of my Pink Floyd movies, If you like those videos, subscibe to my channel :)
@gordonwasted I was born in 1966 and as I grew up there were a couple of kids in my neighborhood that didn't have dads. I asked them where they were and they said they died in Vietnam. I was around 8 years old and didn't understand at the time. Now I have a 4 year old son and I will die of cancer very soon. I can only imagine my son getting older and being angry that "someone took his daddy from him". I love this powerful and emotional song, but it hurts me to listen to it.
@BHNick1 You are a very brave man, I'm sure your family are incredibly proud of you. I have had relatives I am incredibly close to who i have lost, and that have been of huge inspiration to me to this day. Music also is a great help and can bring huge comfort. God bless you.
My favorite freaking movie all of the scenes are awesome

@ev0lve this song was written for The Wall in '79, released as a single before '83, well before your "C Company" joined the Fusiliers.
The song does indeed speak of "Z Company" not "C"
