I could never understand why some people play out to the left like this. I'm left handed and have been playing woodwind instrumentst since I was about 10, playing recorder, then clarinet, flute and sax. I never felt that the instruments were suited more to a left or right hander, both hands do the same thing! Not like a violin or trombone...
Well as you seem to know so much can you tell me if it is a D flute or an F flute which I suspect and how does he get the top c note? As I would like to play this tune
@orlahey It seems to be an F Flute. I don't have any instrument here to check, but I have been playing this on my f flute at home and it sounds the same. He would be getting the top c by sliding the top finger half way across the top hole. In the video that is his right index finger, but for someone who is right handed they will probably play with their left hand nearest the embouchere and it would be their left index finger. Mike is one of those left handed weirdos.
@AchingOvaries how can you tell from this video, it could be any flute it looks so old and well loved....in any case it is not the maker its the player that makes the sound
This is beautiful. I find myself getting addicted to Mike McGoldrick performances, such as this, and Farewell to Whalley RAnge, and Farewell to Uist. I listen over and over. Can anyone play and post this on a low D or C or D flute? I want to try to learn and it's hard to transpose from F. I'm amatuerish but I want to learn anyway.
Great tune. It reminds me of the low whistle playing and the slower tunes he used to play at Hammersmith about 12 years ago. I wish he's play more of them.

@orlahey Olwell bamboo flutes have a distinctive head and body markings. I've seen several and this one simply looks familiar.

Jutland is genius, especially when played on the F flute by Mcgoldrick.
