@ Slantrock Little harsh of the FoD release. it sounds better than many other metal bands newer releases. The day of LPs are long gone. welcome to the digital age. As Alex state's the technology shows who has talent and FoD clearly shows Testament still owns.
As for Alex's talent, hands down a true guitar legend. Has more talent in his one hair on his head than many inspiring bands that are trying to be musicians.
Speaking of how his soloing perfectly fits with the song, the solo on "Raging Waters" definitely comes to mind, that solo perfectly conveys the scenario of a shipwreck and someone drowning, or "The Preacher" solo, really reminds me of a preacher preaching, the way it starts out really wailing. Every solo of his is great but those really come to mind as fitting perfectly with the song and telling little stories that fit with the theme of the song.
He's right about about the old recording systems, how people actually had to really play to sound good. A lot of these newer bands nowadays rely too much on technology like Protools and such. Sure they sound clean on the record, but many of them cant play worth a shit live.
new recordings FUCKING SUCK, i hated the sounds of formation of damnation and of megadeths newest albums, back in the day each album had its own unique sound to it. between 86 and 92 albums sounded perfect.
@666theshred sadly most people these days don't lol, not suprising though, i bet the people who thumbs me down are about 16 and have grown up with these squeaky clean recordings, which i suppose is understandable given it's all they know.
Alex Skolnick is defidently one of the most technical and complex soloists that come to mind. His soloing not only fits perfect with the song, you can't interperate what he will play next, its so natural and un expected...Alex Skolnick, the Legacy lives on...
However nowadays, any record that comes out produced by him has zero dynamic range, with clipping and distortion (Metallica's Death Magnetic, RHCP's Californication)
So therefore , Rubin is abusing digital compression technology
80's before Testament came out with their debut album Legacy they used to be called Legacy(as you may already know), but I used see Alex as a teen at a small club called Ruthies Inn that was located in Oakland. A very dive club but a killer place to see metal bands up close. He was just as amzing then....and was and is super cool.
alex is totally right but the technology is eazy but its not the same as it was in the old days when u needed some talent to record but yeh we support it so whatever
Humility is a trait Alex shows always. He has a first-class skill on the guitar. I really appreciate it when a player of his caliber acts like a human being instead of of a God. Testament is a fantastic band and I think it was primarily his quality of playing and composition that contributed to their success. They sounded more refined and skillful for a reason.
Thanks man!!! Alex is the most underrated players in Metal. He never really got his recognition outside the guitar geek community say like Dimebag or Kirk Hammet. But holy fuck is awesome.
One of the worst abuses of technology is when they snap everything to the grid. Playing slightly off the beat (if you know what you're doing) is where a lot of the soul in the music comes from, otherwise it sounds like a machine.
no one plays like alex, not becouse is one of the bests but becouse is tecnic of picking makes that even if you dont know us playing, after a will you reconize im by is tecnic, and thats why i love him so much and he is a huge influence for me...thatcks alex and keep play in testament becouse isnt the same without you
YES he is one of the best guitarist on the planet no thanxs to satch of course. He's humble too if you listen to talk unlike kirk hammet.Over all I like him way better than hammet.Alex is just a cool layed back cat who happen to shred but he's diverse to he can play anything and own it.That way cool in my book.
I attended a guitar clinic that he put on for Yamaha and that guy is 1000% talent. joe satriani was on of Alex's teachers back in the day and after testament broke up in the early 90's he went back to New York and got his Music degree. Alex Skolnick is one of the best guitar players on the planet hands down
most definetely my friend, taught by satch, he deverves faar more credit than kirk hammett, even tho i used to love metallica, in my opinion, musicaly and for thrash alex and testament just owns. \m/
