  • Nice! I like the incorporation of improvisation here.

Definitely want to hear the whole piece!

  • Come see Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet with Vijay Iyer at the Angel City Jazz Festival at the Ford Amphitheater in LA on 10/3.

  • This is pretty sweet... is there a recording of the whole piece somewhere?

  • Well, nothing is completely original under the sun...! My own usage of this idea is mainly inspired by my experiences performing Roscoe Mitchell's "Cards" pieces, and to some extent Cecil Taylor's large ensemble pieces. Aside from that, the main guiding forces were the constraints of this situation: how do you ask classically trained performers to create an intelligent counterpoint with an ensemble without making a big mess?

  • Could you elaborate on how you came up with the gesture palette? Did you borrow the idea, were you influenced by someone or something, or is it completely original?

  • lol dude chill out. prolly wen he was starting the project someone he was collabing with or something gave it to him as a suggestion cuz like he said hes not used to writing for classical musicians
