This actually isn't a bad party. Not at all. It feels a bit strange having Duran play the role of healer. But Hawk's Jutsus work well in synergy both with Angela AND with Duran. But in a party like this I'd make Angela into a Grand Divina and crank her STR all the way up to 17, so she can do some physical fighting when she's trying to conserve MP.
Either that or take the Rune Master since it's excellent on this storyline...

@ghiblix2 That's nothing to do with Enix, rather both SquareSoft and Enix were masterful 'back in the day'. The merger revolved around SquareSoft management's changes to their selling approach.
It always puzzled me as to why a Light Dark class would have higher Spirit and stronger Holy magic than a Light Light class. Also the fact that she has Rainbow which consists of the "Basic 4" elements, but the Grand Divina is better at Basic 4 magic.
I love the Archmage's sprite colors and the Rainbow spell is beautiful. Now if only she had an extra point in the Strength stats!
First time I get to fight Dragon Emperor I didn't get the 3rd classes, mainly because I had no freaking clue of how, and he didn't stop throwing high level spells at me.
I did win, but wasting every single recovery item and almost all of Carlie's MP... It was the best battle of the game, though.
How do you switch beetwen characters so fast? When I usa an item - let's say round drop I can't do anything (attack or something, surely can't open item menu) until round drop is used. How?!
it was in my experience that the damage specialists like Hawk and Angela are best suited for the dark/dark class, Duran has better healing power as his light/light class.
so keep Duran spamming heals, Angela spamming spells, and Hawk unloading, that works for me, though you're best making sure you have at least one healer in your roster, the first time I played I had all damage dealers, and I ended up using my items too quickly, beat the final boss just barely.
@RAPTOR948 I usually make my Duran a Swordmaster, just because of the elemental imbue spells that he can possess, that or a Duelist, because of a high damage output. I've found Hawk to be best as a Master Ninja, because of a high damage output and a very powerful tech attack (I've leveled every single character to maximum form, beat all 3 final bosses and obtained all final level equipment for all characters). Kevin as a Death Hand class is the most solid choice for a damage role.

Actually, one of the reasons the game never came stateside (in spite of plans to do so) was because there were numerous bugs that strongly affected the game balance, although they did not make the game unplayable. The annoyance of these bugs was compounded by the same reason the game was able to overcome the SNES' graphical limitations: the game's data was heavily compressed. This compression made it difficult to fix anything, so they ended up canning the English translation.
How about they remake this game and bring it to America for PSN and XBLA? Sounds good? i mean, the kids could really see a glimpse of the golden age of RPGs. Not to say that the RPGs that are out now are rubbish, but this is good compared to the stuff Square brought out with Enix.
@ghiblix2 I wouldn't blame you if you dislike Square-Enix. In my opinion, Squaresoft is better than Square-Enix. Squaresoft creates a unique video games in the 90s. RIght now, Square-Enix makes crappy video games or such. I like this game first and the second is Chrono Trigger.
@BurialRabbit you DO realize that this game AND FF were both produced by squaresoft before the merger with enix, ya? and that the merger took place in 2003, the same year as final fantast 11 was released (enix had nothing to do with the planning). and what good games have square enix come out with since 2003? final fantasy X-2? the only games that have been successful since the merger have been kingdom hearts (square 2002, before merger) and remakes of old squaresoft titles. see a pattern?
You also gotta remember that Sqaure basically destroyed itself financially making The Spirits within and when Sony was about to swoop in and take them over (because one of their biggest debtors was Sony), another Debtor, Enix said "We'll take you over so you can make more shitty games for other platforms." That allowed them to make stuff like Crystal Chronicles and shit for Nintendo. Had Sony taken them over, CC would never have happened (or only have been a PS2 exclusive).
Enix wasn't any part of that. I coudl say the same thing abotu Square adding all those crazy graphics to Dragon Quest just to up sales. They both equally screwed each other in that deal. Now, they are trying to ruin Estopolis.
@ghiblix2 Today S-E now has an audience, and I think that now S-E thinks that they need to 'perform' for that audience, and all you get is a craptastic load of fine visuals, flashy characters, and a title that basically says:
"Hey, remember me from 15 years ago when I was actually good? Want to see if I'm still good today?"
Me: "OH! S-E! I remember ya! Didn't you make Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, FF 6,7,8, & 9 with Square, and Dragon Warrior/Quest with Enix! This should be good!"
@ChronoPhoenix Yeah, she has good healing spells, but his attack/summoning spells are poor, so i made a mistake when i choose her class change. Usually my team is:Kevin, Hawk & Duran/Lise, and the boss battles will be over in no time with prober use of sword magic and status boost...
I don't recommend hawk like light class char it's a bit useless better for him Ninja Master or Nightblade. For Duran classes like Swordmaster (Vacuum Sword), Paladin(Flashing Sword), Duelist (Eruption Sword). Kevin Death Hand (with Seiyruu death fist), Warrior Monk, God Hand (Byakako Shockwave). to all who read this, I need some input...I've started a new game on Secret of Mana 2, and I'm using Hawk, Duran and Kevin; however I can't decide what classes I should make then...can anyone tell me some class combinations that would be good and would work well together?
@cloudmaster220 it's funny you mention that combination, that's what I did for my first run-through with Hawk, Duran, and Kevin (I had Kevin as a god-hand) great combination, I loved it. but I already made my final class changes...I made Duran a Paladin, Kevin a Dervish, and Hawk a Wanderer. @InsaneDrunkenAngel well, a nice composition would be having a debuffer (- enemies) and a buffer (+ allies) and an huge dmg dealer. This sounds sexy.
So I would choose the Ninja Master (great spells with great debuffs, very very good)
and the Sword Master (choosing the opposite element is always a great buff. ) Give those advantages to Kevin in his most gruesome form, The Death Hand, can snuff away anyone.

He can MT it, and the Paladin can't so I think Lord was a good choice. I'm using the same characters as him, only I'm going for Grand Divina and Rogue with the Lord, because the Grand Divina has a cooler spell (I think) than her other classes, and the Rogue has INSANE vitality... I have to say, I'm not a fan of the Nightblade =S. I just can't really find a use for his Jutsus. I'm more of a fan of stat ups than stat downs, and I prefer single techs over MT so...
Well, I like a combo of both. In my team I have Hawk as Master Ninja Angela as... something on the dark side (didn't play in a long time now so I forgot, but I think it was Magus) and Lise as a Valkyrie.
So I can both stat up my team, and stat down my opponents. Realy usefull.^^
@kauyun You can target all with heal-light, it's the big advantage of Lord(Duran's best healing class, very decent), and magic circle's not too bad for a single-target attack. Nightblade is nice, deadly weapon for a solid opener and lots of little ninja tricks(Including multi-target 'spells').. with split-image slice being a great AoE tech and general solid attack power.... but then, most teams are pretty decent in SD3.
@kauyun I know this is way overdue, since your comment was made over a year ago. You have Hawk as Nightblade because he can use Deadly Weapon, which lowers the enemy's Maximum HP by 5% everytime, up to a maximum of 5 uses, after which, it no longer does anything. It works on Dragon Emperor and Arch Demon, but not on Dark Lich. As for the others, i barely ever use Angela, so i am unsure of her class (Kevin is my usual P1 choice), you take Duran as Lord because he has amazing tanking properties.
@kauyun Don't worry. It's not the team i'd take either. Duran is far too slow for my liking. My usual team is Kevin (Death Hand), Lise (Star Lancer) and Hawk (Master Ninja). Just because that team deals so much damage, I can kill anything before the Poto oils run dry, lol.
@Gigameth89 My team was different. I controlled Lise and had her go pure dark, then had Carlie go pure light, and I forget what I did for Kevin. (It's been years since I played it; she gets stat-up abilities if Lise goes pure light, right?)
@kauyun I think that's correct. Lord can multitarget Heal Light, and it's always recommended to have a healer on your team, and he also has Tinkle Rain, which is useful too. You only have 9 Poto Oils, which I don't think is enough; you need a healer on your team too.
Arch Mage is always a good choice, but it doesn't fit well with Hawk's dark classes (both specialize in elemental damage)
Though I have to say Nightblade is quite good. He can't multitarget Jutsus but has unique skills.
With Duran as main character I'd go with something like this
Duran : Paladin or lord if you really care for MT heal but then you miss the full screen tech
Hawk : Ninja Master
Lise : Star Lancer
That's quite an awesome setup cause you get the ability to buff up your party while casting stats-down with Hawk jutsus in a short time. I don't like using dragon scale, it's annoyingly fastidious.
Or you could drop Kevin in and have him choose something like God Hand, and Duran as Duelist.
Well, I read about class changing from some web manual. It described the knight class as part the light side and the gladiator class as part of the dark side.
Dragon Emperor definately hardest final boss. Archmage not a good class to use against him as he's very light resistant unlike most evil bosses toward the end.
N/m forgot Arch Mage can utilize Rune books as Death Spell..What cheap ass Book of Rune combo lol!!

Duran uses Leaf Saber to keep everyone's MP, Carlie Black Curse to lower D.Emperor damage and Lise Protect Down to raise damage, also use Drake's Scale to make damage even bigger and have some Mama Poto oil in case of D.Emperor use Prisoner.
Re-use Black Curse and Protect Down when he buffs himself near the battle's end.
Simple, but useful tactic. I killed him in 6~8 minutes with all characters at Lv.58.
This game is pretty good, although the combat system started to bore me really quickly. And how much is a game where combat is common really worth when the combat system is boring? ;P
I did manage to complete all 3 questlines, though. But just because I found the story/stories to be interesting.
It's kinda disappointing compared to the greatness of the first one although almost every RPG has it's positives and negative points that no other RPGs have (like this one has the class change and different storyline depending on what toons you pick MAIN AND ALTERNATE).
Also depends on who you get, if you get all melee guys of course it's gonna be sucky and easy.
If Sieken Densetsu 3 were a 3-D game, then some should give the Dragon Emperor audible thunderous footsteps, if did any moving around, here all he moves is head.
Do the Dark Lich and the Dragon Emperor do anything when the music changes?
does anyone know that when you use a characters magic and then use another characters magic, the casting time just halves down, kills some time if you do that, anyway i beat this game a long time ago
Uh, almost all SNES games are translated in english by now. Terranigma was released in Europe from the start, and Star Ocean has been translated. Just go around and search.
Damn. Now I feel like playing this game again. I remember playing with my brother a long time ago... Duran, Angela, and Carlie. The music in the second part of this battle is incredible.

#2 plays in beginning #3 at the end. They shoulda just used #3 through-out the whole thing since #2 is so fuckin boring and used for half the bosses in the game.
@FaytLinegod This battle involves both Sacrifice part 2 and 3 in actual fact. The music before the battle (before this video) is Sacrifice part 1, the video starts with Sacrifice 2 and Sacrifice part 3 come in at 3°33°.
And if you'd like, buy some saber claws from the black market.
Commence kicking the crap out of everything on-screen. I used this party to fight the Dark prince archdemon and all I remember was Bigieu doing all of 2 damage with her big special attacks since the stats discrepancy was that high. Dark prince went down in a flash

I think this boss was the weakest. The strongest was the Archdemon, then the Dark Lich and finally the Dragon Emperor
Anyway, with Secret of Mana 1 and Secret of Evermore, this was one the best RPGs ever made.

Dragon Emperor main danger is he has TWO massive damage spells.
Flare AND Ancient.
Dark Lich only uses Ancient, and I think Archdemon only has Catastrophe.
Archdemon is better defensively, so he takes longer to kill though.
Dark Lich....just sorta...floats there while you smack the hell out of him.

Only ever played this on a ROM and never actually beat it. Is it the same final boss no matter what people you choose?
My main person was the thief guy. My second was the sword guy, and my third was the spear girl.
(It's been almost ten years since I played so that's all I remember)

@cloudmaster220 it's funny you mention that combination, that's what I did for my first run-through with Hawk, Duran, and Kevin (I had Kevin as a god-hand) great combination, I loved it. but I already made my final class changes...I made Duran a Paladin, Kevin a Dervish, and Hawk a Wanderer. @InsaneDrunkenAngel well, a nice composition would be having a debuffer (- enemies) and a buffer (+ allies) and an huge dmg dealer. This sounds sexy.
So I would choose the Ninja Master (great spells with great debuffs, very very good)
and the Sword Master (choosing the opposite element is always a great buff. ) Give those advantages to Kevin in his most gruesome form, The Death Hand, can snuff away anyone.

Duran as Lord can only use 1 usefull spell (heal light) and I'm not sure if he can use it on the whole party.
Angela as an Arch Mage is a good choice
but I'm also unsure of Hawk's qualitys as a Nightblade...

actually, that the only thing about the Lord, he can multitarget the spells
and hawk as a NightBlade is amazing to reduce boss stats (including his HP for a quicker victory)

He can MT it, and the Paladin can't so I think Lord was a good choice. I'm using the same characters as him, only I'm going for Grand Divina and Rogue with the Lord, because the Grand Divina has a cooler spell (I think) than her other classes, and the Rogue has INSANE vitality... I have to say, I'm not a fan of the Nightblade =S. I just can't really find a use for his Jutsus. I'm more of a fan of stat ups than stat downs, and I prefer single techs over MT so...

Well, I like a combo of both. In my team I have Hawk as Master Ninja Angela as... something on the dark side (didn't play in a long time now so I forgot, but I think it was Magus) and Lise as a Valkyrie.
So I can both stat up my team, and stat down my opponents. Realy usefull.^^
I'm aiming for the Archdemon by the way.

@kauyun You can target all with heal-light, it's the big advantage of Lord(Duran's best healing class, very decent), and magic circle's not too bad for a single-target attack. Nightblade is nice, deadly weapon for a solid opener and lots of little ninja tricks(Including multi-target 'spells').. with split-image slice being a great AoE tech and general solid attack power.... but then, most teams are pretty decent in SD3.

@kauyun I know this is way overdue, since your comment was made over a year ago. You have Hawk as Nightblade because he can use Deadly Weapon, which lowers the enemy's Maximum HP by 5% everytime, up to a maximum of 5 uses, after which, it no longer does anything. It works on Dragon Emperor and Arch Demon, but not on Dark Lich. As for the others, i barely ever use Angela, so i am unsure of her class (Kevin is my usual P1 choice), you take Duran as Lord because he has amazing tanking properties.

@kauyun Don't worry. It's not the team i'd take either. Duran is far too slow for my liking. My usual team is Kevin (Death Hand), Lise (Star Lancer) and Hawk (Master Ninja). Just because that team deals so much damage, I can kill anything before the Poto oils run dry, lol.

@Gigameth89 My team was different. I controlled Lise and had her go pure dark, then had Carlie go pure light, and I forget what I did for Kevin. (It's been years since I played it; she gets stat-up abilities if Lise goes pure light, right?)

@kauyun I think that's correct. Lord can multitarget Heal Light, and it's always recommended to have a healer on your team, and he also has Tinkle Rain, which is useful too. You only have 9 Poto Oils, which I don't think is enough; you need a healer on your team too.
Arch Mage is always a good choice, but it doesn't fit well with Hawk's dark classes (both specialize in elemental damage)
Though I have to say Nightblade is quite good. He can't multitarget Jutsus but has unique skills.

With Duran as main character I'd go with something like this
Duran : Paladin or lord if you really care for MT heal but then you miss the full screen tech
Hawk : Ninja Master
Lise : Star Lancer
That's quite an awesome setup cause you get the ability to buff up your party while casting stats-down with Hawk jutsus in a short time. I don't like using dragon scale, it's annoyingly fastidious.
Or you could drop Kevin in and have him choose something like God Hand, and Duran as Duelist.

Dragon Emperor definately hardest final boss. Archmage not a good class to use against him as he's very light resistant unlike most evil bosses toward the end.
N/m forgot Arch Mage can utilize Rune books as Death Spell..What cheap ass Book of Rune combo lol!!

My team was:
Duran (Swordmaster)
Carlie (Necromancer)
Lise (Fenrir Knight)
Duran uses Leaf Saber to keep everyone's MP, Carlie Black Curse to lower D.Emperor damage and Lise Protect Down to raise damage, also use Drake's Scale to make damage even bigger and have some Mama Poto oil in case of D.Emperor use Prisoner.
Re-use Black Curse and Protect Down when he buffs himself near the battle's end.
Simple, but useful tactic. I killed him in 6~8 minutes with all characters at Lv.58.

This game is pretty good, although the combat system started to bore me really quickly. And how much is a game where combat is common really worth when the combat system is boring? ;P
I did manage to complete all 3 questlines, though. But just because I found the story/stories to be interesting.

It's kinda disappointing compared to the greatness of the first one although almost every RPG has it's positives and negative points that no other RPGs have (like this one has the class change and different storyline depending on what toons you pick MAIN AND ALTERNATE).
Also depends on who you get, if you get all melee guys of course it's gonna be sucky and easy.

Uh, almost all SNES games are translated in english by now. Terranigma was released in Europe from the start, and Star Ocean has been translated. Just go around and search.

@FaytLinegod This battle involves both Sacrifice part 2 and 3 in actual fact. The music before the battle (before this video) is Sacrifice part 1, the video starts with Sacrifice 2 and Sacrifice part 3 come in at 3°33°.

And if you'd like, buy some saber claws from the black market.
Commence kicking the crap out of everything on-screen. I used this party to fight the Dark prince archdemon and all I remember was Bigieu doing all of 2 damage with her big special attacks since the stats discrepancy was that high. Dark prince went down in a flash
