Its a living shame that the engineers that designed this fabulous kit car didnt have enough consideration to design this car so that a man of 6"10 (namely ME) would be able to fit into it.
*sigh* I guess they think that only midgets and other short people enjoy sports cars or something.
@Texarmageddon I guess everyone cant be perfect. "nyuck nyuck". In any case, im over it now. Im building a 4th gen camaro with a c4 suspension swap. That should be fun enough.
@santi505 there are people that have twin turboed these things. 1000+hp. There is plenty of room around the engine. An Air/Water intercooler would probably work out best for ease of installing and getting maximum efficiency out of the motor. Don't know if people actually make kits, but I'm sure if you look on the forum, you can get some ideas and some help.
@santi505 If you drive one with a standard LS1 @ 350 Hp, you will soon realize that anything much more than a stock LS7 @ 505 Hp is completely unnecessary and largely unusable. Don't think to apply the same rules to the GTM as most other cars.... it's extremely light compared even to a Corvette. Aim for 500 Hp, which - with a mild LS3 - should produce 0-60 in 3 seconds flat and a theoretical 208 Mph top speed. How much do you want to spend to upgrade beyond that for a late 2 sec 0-60 & 215 Mph?
@Curveball The chassis design is actually pretty good. The door frames are 1" square tubing (not on the car yet) and the tubular frame wraps around you nicely. It would actually be pretty hard for a car to hit you in a way that you are not protected. These are designed by the same guys that rolled one of their Cobra kits, patched the fiberglass and raced it the next day. I'd trust it.
I don't see the driver walking from a 35+mph T-Bone collision. I'm not trying to insult your car, I really like them. They are impressive, but I just don't see them or any other tube frame car as safe.
@Curveball That's fine - it's your opinion - but as you'll know, the GTM isn't 'just another kit car'. I showed pictures of the car in body-off phase to an engineer, and he was really impressed with the strength and rigidity of the overall design. I've known drag racers survive horrendous crashes with similar space-frame designs. Whether you walk away from being T-boned will always depend on what exactly T-bones you; there's only so much protection afforded by any low-profile car.
Just wondering if you have ever started a brand new engine. When you work around an engine you get oils from your hands and from whatever you are working with on the engine and exhaust. When the engine warms up it burns it off...especially the exhaust. So paint, dust and especially oil will burn off the first few heat cycles you put the car through.
I see in the description that there is an ls2 in there but I was under the impression the kit called for an ls1. Did you guys just modify it slightly for the ls2 or was there a typo on the site and the ls2 fits in there perfectly?
The LS2 fits just like the LS1. You can fit an LS7 in too. Any LS based will work. The water pump must be from an LS1 though to fit properly. Can't remember what else must be LS1 specific, but it's just accessory related.
@redghost105 a ls7 gtm with a six speed was faster than the zr1's 0-60 is 3.3 seconds. 1/4 mile is 11.1 seconds and the ls7 gtm goes 0-60 in 3 second flat and 1/4 mile in 11 second flat. the biggest issue of putting an ls9 in the gtm is the throttle body placing, it would surely be hard to run piping for an intake to it. but you could buy a TVS 2300, same type of supercharger used on the ls9's but with a rear inlet or may be Kennebell 2.8L and make more horsepower
You could yes. It's one of the "larger" kit cars on the market. Anything like a DDR SP8 though for example, you would have no chance. It would be a tight fit for you though btw.
If I get one later this year or the next, then Ill make plans to drop the diver-side floor pan an extra 2-inches or so to accomodate the needed head-room.
A "gurney bubble" may help with head-room, but Id still need to have a good "line-of-sight" through the window.
I finally end up scoring a $45,000per /year job, having a pretty decent garage and tools of my own and cant even build the car of my dreams because of an engineer's oversight.
Its sad that most cars that I like only have enough interior driver's space for midgets.
no an ls7 is still a small block. the difference between small block and big block is not displacement, as the gmpp lsx is technically a small block and can be made to displace over 481 cubic inches, and an old chevy 396 is considered a big block. the car can take a variety of engines but because it weighs so little (2200 lbs. without driver) even a mild ls1 with 350 rwhp will do 0-60 in the mid-3 second range.
@dougjuice the general notion of a big block is above 400ci, the only exception to this is the ls7 which is a small block on the fact that the cylinders are very close together. older 427's were big blocks
I don't know where you think 500hp. It's the engine in the base C6 Vettes. SAE is 405 HP. The SAE measurements are tricky when you go and change everything about the induction and exhaust, we have more power, but unless it's on a dyno we won't know. I'm estimating 420 hp. This is a street car though, so anything more and it would not be usable. First gear is useless as it is. Past half throttle it just spins the tires (325/30-19 Eagle F1 Supercars). Car only weighs about 2400 lbs.
they can be built for around 30-35ish including the cost of the door car, but that is the utter basic price I think. If you have a wrecked c5 then its a fantastic alternative.
I own a GTM. Any LS engine will fit including the Big Block. I have a modified LS6 with about 480HP which means sub 6 sec 0-100 and 3 sec flat 0-60. The tranny is about 5K stock rebuilt (up to 600HP) or 10K+ for modified. This car with a stock LS2 will run 6.6sec 0-100 and a 3.2sec 0-60. The car only weighs 2350lbs so high HP is not needed for crazy speed.
yeah thats what i was thinking that any LS engine or varaince thereof would work in the engine compartment. did u put a wing on yours u2g1? how much do you think you've spent on your car?
one of those lingenfelter motors would fit inside.they have some based off the same dimensions as the LS7's & LS6's used in the ZO6& ZO7. put one of those bad boys in there with 800hp+ you'd have a BEAST! but then again that lingen 800hp motor is bout 13k the 1000hp is about 19k alone. but considering you'd own the streets for about $800k+ less than a SSC, veyron, ford Gt,thats pretty damn impressive!
You can get a 1000hp engine for $19,000? That's about £9,500! Theres a British supercar that takes tuned big block Chevy V8s from a company called AmericanSpeed. The most powerful engine you can get is 800hp for £40,000 (I think it's pounds).
Yes lingenfelter motors will build a 1000hp motor for $19k. its on their website. those motors are bad ass! check the vids with the corvettes with lingenfelters in them. i saw a 1200hp zo6 on here before too, but the car being so light i dont think you could control it. cuz heck get on the pedal just slightly and youd smoke the tires. also if im not mistaken that $19k also includes a mod. tranny in the package too! =-) ill have to look at the site again to see.
Does anyone know if the GTM chassis would be able to handle a twin turbo 427 from Lingenfelter Performance? Or a prochargered all alloy big block set up from say Steve Morris Race engines? Because this is one brilliant kit car...
A big block probably will not fit inside the cage surrounding the engine. There is someone that has twin turbo setups specifically for the GTM. The only problem is that you will end up spending about $10K on the Porsche G50 transaxle to handle that much power, but if you are willing to drop twice that on a motor, then I guess you won't have an issue forking over some more for the tranny.
Thanks Tim, yes, I thought the alloy big block from Steve Morris racing was a bit out of the question, however 2200hp on pump gas would be interesting. The folks making the TT set ups for the GTM are not schwartz performance by any chance? I agree, if you had a TT set up in the GTM I'm sure the price of a G50 transaxle would not be a problem considering you will have simular power and set up as the SSC Aero coming in at $585k.
