i love this show so much, i taped all the new episodes when they first came out on HBO on my DVR, and then protected them from being erased..... all seven episodes are still there ^-^
And it is not because it showed war in at its grittiest, but because it made those Marines and all of us look like we don't know the most basic of shit. Yeah, ok, they had some real jarheads who were there help them capture the feel of it, but did they neglect to tell them "hey, you know Marines know how to shoot a fucking 203, everybody goes through SOI. We know not to fire a 40mm explosive device directly into the ground because we know it has a time delay and will bounce up and hit somebody!"
The show was a comedy and it made Marines everywhere look bad. It sucked as bad as the Pacific. Band of Brothers didn't pull this shit, they showed the Army in a realistic fashion and didn't try to get all political and shit. Complete liberal BS.

Civilian casualties are a thing of war (when it comes to high explosive devices), but highly trained recon marines do not kill civies with 203 launched smoke grenades. BS

Nothing compares Generation Kill its hard to sit through a film about the Iraq war after watching this. I tried to watch this movie called Battle for Haditha. Couldn't even do it.
Being a ADF reservist, i can appreciate what soldiers go through whilst in a active combat area.
A wonderful TV series, gritty, dirty, realistic and well acted. 10/10.
On side note, i dont think it would hurt the the US army and marines image if the men and women serving acted a bit less,gung ho, and with a little more finesse. However they still a excellent job.

@wadyano well its the simple monotony of those things that makes it the story. Its based on real events. Even some of the characters in the series are being played by the actual marines. Like Rudy in the series is played by the actual Rudy Reyes who was there, and not just some hired actor. And its showing us what our soldiers go through, what they experience, what they talk about, and what they do to pass the time. it is repetitive but its about showing us ppl back home what they go through.

And yes, Marines are being issued MARPAT in basic training... have been for several years now. I was issued old school woodland (far before MARPAT).

@Jayman135861 i didn't really like this series much. i didn't feel it told much of a story until the last 2 episodes. after a while i felt like ok we got the point. marines spend alot of time in humvees. they swear, they sing, they like porn. can we move on?

@wadyano well its the simple monotony of those things that makes it the story. Its based on real events. Even some of the characters in the series are being played by the actual marines. Like Rudy in the series is played by the actual Rudy Reyes who was there, and not just some hired actor. And its showing us what our soldiers go through, what they experience, what they talk about, and what they do to pass the time. it is repetitive but its about showing us ppl back home what they go through.

It is Op Iraqi Freedom...the MARPAT (digital) camo that sgt colbert wears was not used in the first gulf war. This war when the new camo was first being issues and not everyone had them yet. thats why both the digital and desert BDU camo are in the movie

@uniform2107 ummm... MARPAT stands for MARine PATtern. In short, uniform, the ONLY branch that gets MARPAT is the United States Marine Corps. Its THEIR pattern, and only theirs, and is based on the fractal pattern of CADPAT, which is Canada's camo.
And yes, Marines are being issued MARPAT in basic training... have been for several years now. I was issued old school woodland (far before MARPAT).

Generation kill - as good as it was - still gave a false account of war. It made war seem almost heroic. It stopped well short of giving a real idea of the human cost of war.
It's was too seductive for the Playstation generation who think war is cool.
For the Americans war WAS cool. But imagine being an Iraqi civililian: ripped to pieces by American artillery, lying in a pool of your own piss and shit, screaming for your mother
Most Americans and Brits have no fucking clue. Not even close.
