Be advised NY State law allows a bike to take a whole traffic lane if he/she feels it is not safe to ride on the side of traffic.

Don't know how smart that is with all the Red Bull cabbies, drunks and lunatics, but perhaps a ride should be organized along that line.

If they all stopped at the light, those Friday rides could tie up traffic legally and the cops could do nothing.

Good advice, but the issue with this lane was that a guy was killed because someone was double parked in the bike lane and he had to go around, and was then doored by that same vehicle and run over.

Generally, in cities, there is never enough clear road to get up to the legal speed limits, on a bicycle. So what do you mean when you say 'YOU ARE GOING TOO FAST?'. Bikes are vehicles too. Just like a car, truck, motorbike, etc.... Perhaps someday and you will be driving your car get t-boned by someone driving the limit. Will you then say that they were driving 'too fast'?

"GOING TOO FAST" means that you are moving too quickly to avoid accidents like this. Just because the limit is 30 (or whatever), it doesnt mean it is safe to go that fast. Example - You are in a car on a narrow road, with children playing with a ball at the side. It is icy and raining and you cannot see very well. Do you still go 30 because the sign says so?

If cars went so fast that they didnt have the time to steer or brake to stop an accident, then they are going too fast.

Bikes were here long before cars were and as a fat American I want to ride my bike but realize I will die if I do so. The best way to loose weight and keep it off is to have a daily task that you can and will do. Riding a bike to work is perfect for this but irresponsible drivers have to be texting and what ever while driving. If they hit you and you are in a car not too bad if hit on a bike you are dead.

Bicycle driving instructors teach cyclists to NEVER ride next to parked cars. Your visibility and predictability are poor next to cars that block sight lines-and then there are those doors. I know many cyclists who have over 100,000 miles W/O a crash. They do not look to bike lanes, they trust the rules of the road and learn to ride with traffic.

We should teach cyclists how to use the rules of the road and ride with traffic.

but, in nyc, car doors open not just from parked cars, but cabs + cars dropping people off, etc. & with few bike lanes, & motor vehicles completely dominating the roads, there aren't many places for bikes to ride.

as this video recommends, if there were more safe, buffered bike lanes, the roads would be safer for all, and it would be easier to distinguish which parts of the road are for cars and which are for bikes.
