  • I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIST!

  • sometimes i hear a young christopher lloyd when jeff sings.. marty! get to the delorean!

  • When he sings about loving Jesus Christ it's not meant to be taken too literally, it's not about religion.

  • @leej70 its kind of ironic too singing about loving Jesus whilst singing about loving a Jewish girl

  • @VRedRoses Exactly! Good point mate.

  • Jeremy is a pretty intense drummer.

  • 29 people don't love jesus christ :(

  • @scotos that was strangely an understatement.

  • Wow, these guys really love Jesus Christ.

  • Great energy !

  • Who's playing the electric guitar? Is it Jeff using a distortion pedal, or somebody I can't see?

  • @BlackHoleSun1921 i think jeff is using distortion

  • @BlackHoleSun1921 He's playing an electric guitar.

  • Tavi Gevinson said in Spin that her Jewish parents disapprove of her listening to that "Jesus Christ song". Guess what song she was referring to.

  • @joesmomisdead creed

  • THAT is how to perform a song.

  • IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU JESUUUUUUUUUUUUS CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIST

  • Lots of people crack on Jeff's voice but I don't think it's that bad. I mean his voice fits the music perfectly.

  • OKAY

  • I'd give ten years of my life to see NMH live.

  • @LucidPsychosis

you can they are playing a show this year in minneapolis, tickets go on sale tomorrow !

  • theres a difference between playing a live show where you can barley hear yourself and recording in studio chances are he has a better voice than most of the people who are saying he has a shitty voice..infact its true

  • he has a great voice your all noobs..

  • NMH IS NOT HIPSTER BY ANY MEANS..... GET A LIFE PPL.

  • this is one of the greatest performances in the history of pop music!

  • @aginghipster pop music? u fucking hipster to fuck urself

  • @biofan234 Hipster can't take a joke.

  • I... ah... I... umh... I LOVE YOU JEFF!!!

  • Jeff fucking Mangum, amirite?

  • People usually pass them off as "hipster shit" but I loved them on their first listen.

  • @rationalfriend Same. "hipster shit", as if. I completely base all of my life in them now. And I dont even know why. BUT YOU DO BECAUSE ITS NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL!

  • @rationalfriend

How is this hipster shit? I never heard anyone call NMH a hipster band. They're 90's raw folk rock at it's finest.

  • what are all these comments that NMH is good "despite their being sloppy/ his bad voice"? they are RIGHT ON and he has a CHILLING voice.

  • @bleedingcherub My thoughts exactly, especially in regards to the sloppiness. This is just about exactly how chaotic and mad this song should be.

  • Comment removed

  • I love his voice. It's so... real.

  • 1:05

  • I dont really understand why people think he has a bad voice...

  • Two Toronto shows this summer. Winter just got even longer...

  • what religion is Jeff?

  • @irockwithbillgates I believe one has been formed around him

  • when was this filmed?

  • Hey, I know it's totally shameless and lame to solicit your covers.. especially on a Neutral Milk Hotel page. But. With that said, I just did a cover of Engine and would be so grateful to anyone who would like to listen to it. (obviously it's got nothing on the original but I tried my best) thanks

  • do they still play shows? i've never seen them and i really want to

  • @toobsockproductions they broke up about 13 years ago

  • This is what happens when you give somebody acid and a guitar. Gotta love it.

  • He's cool because he loves Jesus Christ

and I love Jesus Christ too.

  • @644547024430 nah, he's singing in character. not necessarily a reflection of his beliefs.

  • @swellfellow naw dude, i'm pretty sure that's not a character

because if it is, then it's a really shitty one. a shitty one with shitty lyrics and a shitty voice that spouts nothing but total utter shit.

  • @644547024430 word

  • if he wanted he could do nothing but play this live round the world and get rich.

    respect.

  • look at the guy jumping around with the accordion!

    Jesus Christ that's awesome!

  • this is historic footage!

  • ACOJONANTE!!!

  • There is something I cant quite put my finger on in this music, damn, if only there was a phrase in french for this..............

  • @thegeist79 Sortilège.

  • @thegeist79 I love how the comment below yours completely works:)

  • 2deep4u

  • What's all this talk about this having anything to do with 'hipster' bullshit? This is Neutral Milk Hotel and its what pure creative expression looks/sounds like. Stop bitching about something that you are clearly incapable of understanding.

  • Comment removed

  • i think 'i love you, jesus christ' is a beautiful sentiment. you can look at it different ways but the energy and the passion behind it is something that is admirable.

  • one of the greatest albums ever recorded

  • Just because hipsters worship this band doesn't mean they aren't talented. I loathe hipsters with every ounce of hate my body can produce but I can't deny that this band is beyond amazing. Jeff Mangum is one of the most talented musicians ever and influences many more talented musicians/bands. Don't hate the band because of the listeners.

  • fucking hipsters

  • I agree! You *should* make money off all those dumbass hipster music fans. You should start a band and be famous. It’s easy! Quit your job and sell your songs to all those stupid hipster music fans. They're so stupid, they'll buy anything.

  • Don't you guys just love when they start jumping around and shit? Julian is so awesome!

  • this song seems to explode directly from the subconscious... its a pure expression of the manic joy that punctuates depression. his performance is so in touch with that vibe that his lungs and throat cannot contain his soul. HURRICANE MANGUM.

  • beautiful

  • His voice is amazing, and his songs are sheer genius.

  • Is that guy with the beard from the gerbils?

  • @mommytonut yeah

  • I would be honored if some of you would check out some of my songs. I do Two-Headed Boy parts 1 and 2 as well as other covers and some originals. I worship Jeff Mangum and if you are watching this you obviously have good taste. Check my songs out PLEASE!!!

  • im a fan for life now

  • an amazing story teller and poet, jeff magnum.

  • this is b l i s s

  • i would have sold my very soul to be at this concert.

  • Amazing... wish I could have been there!

  • That guy playing the horn- wasn't he interviewed in the documentary Athens GA Inside Out?

  • Wow !

If I win the lottery I am deffo building a time-machine to travel back to be in the mosh-pit for this concert.

    How good is this ??

  • n i c e

  • d00d they rock live!!!

  • It's a magic!!!!!

  • i love this song. it's a shame they don't play anymore.

  • whatever is awesome is fucking awesome in my opinion.

  • @mrwiggles2000 nah, this song was actually written years before the other songs on the album. it was inspired by a Christian camp Jeff went to as a kid.. or something like that.

  • @gerhard128 not sure what "homosexual music" is exactly, but this band and this track specifically is crazy good. so if you find any more of this genre, do share! thnks.

  • LOL, you like it in the ass? ahahah

  • He might not have the best voice, but I don't care. Easily in my top 3 favorite bands. The energy in this is fucking awesome.

  • I think his voice is really awesome

  • @WithTheLightsOut NO, he does have the best voice. =) lo fi just fucks it up with static and crap, but isn't that the beauty of it? I don't know anyone else that can hold his breath for as long as he does or switch pitches as easily as he does with seminal flow.

  • @WithTheLightsOut no, he does have the best voice

  • @WithTheLightsOut David Byrne once said "The better the singer's voice, the harder it is to believe what they're singing."

  • @barisaxkid Good quote, but I would call Thom Yorke the exception to the rule.

  • @barisaxkid too true

  • @WithTheLightsOut no he does have the best voice

  • YES!

saying "i love you Jesus christ" like that is a controversial and psychotic thing to present to people.

death metal mastrabutory rockers can only wish they could be that "crazy",

Nuetral milk hotel is truly transcendental

  • Uuh, yes, they're so envious...

  • "Death metal mastrabutory rockers"? That's quite a strange example.

  • I love YOUuuuuuuuuu Je sUH US CAH RIIIIAHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIST!!!!!!!!!!

  • i would assume

  • Jesus touched my baby.

  • I LOVE YOU JESSUS CHRIIIISSSTTTT

  • this band is so shit is almost surreal

  • your right this band is "The Shit" period ;) ;)

so you don't like it, who cares? move on find something else to hate.

  • bland? they are as bland as Tabasco sauce.

You just lack the perceptive qualities to appreciate the music. In my opinion they are one of the best bands of all time. I certainly think Jeff Magnum creates the best lyrics in the style of free floating mind conciseness more than anyone. His voice although technically imperfect provides more weight and substance than any thoroughbred school instructed vocalist I've ever heard.

  • hahah

  • This music is RAW and psychotic as hell,

anyone who dismisses it is denying a part of their own psychotic and unpolished, lyrically brilliant mind.

to say I love you jesus in this context is not stupid- it's beautifully insane and controversial,

this music seems deliberate, any reaction you have to it is OK with them,

  • I don't think it's bad or innovating. He was a passionate writer and a passionate musician in general. Passion often comes across as sloppy and bad by people who only understand pretty music.

I, for one, love beautiful musical and talented singers. I can't stand hipster bands that are only good because they're obscure and different sounding. However, if they're sloppy AND passionate, I like them even more than the ones with pretty music.

  • the thing is, you say he WAS a passionate musician,

    hes still out there.....

  • passion and sloppiness or "bad" are two entirely different things; sloppiness can often be a side-effect of passion, but it IS possible to be passionate without being sloppy.Sloppy, in turn, often leads to "bad", but again IMO its possible to be sloppy without being bad.I have alot of respect for NMH; they capture a sort of energy that gets produced by very few bands, but IMHO they couldve used a little bit more instrumental skill; Im sure it would have come over time; this is almost amateurish

  • now before I get bombarded with hate, Im gonna admit I ran out of characters to state my full opinion. I LIKE NMH, warts and all. In fact, after seeing a few godawful covers, even some of Jeff Magnum's "sloppy" moments are starting to make a little bit more sense. However, I still stand by my original opinion which was that they could have done more with more solid musicianship, rather relying on pure "passion" with very little grounding, which becomes evident more often than it probably should

  • you're probably right that they could have been much better with more adept musical skills, but realistically there are a lot more "skillful" musicians out there that have can't churn out anything as creative or kinetic. point being, musical-mastery isn't everything and in the end its hardly anything

  • @deanna4270 never heard a truer statement

  • you are a perfect example of the person who just doesn't "get it" done more according to whom? then they would not be NMH. their intentional "sloppy" moments are conceptual. you are saying they shouldn't be everything that they are! clueless

  • lol "you don't get it"

  • lol you got 4 thumbs down for saying that their music would be better if they had been better musicians

    makes PERFECT SENSE

  • @forsks yep, helluva thing, isn't it?

  • @tripthelightfilm NO, he does have the best voice. =) lo fi just fucks it up with static and crap, but isn't that the beauty of it? I don't know anyone else that can hold his breath for as long as he does or switch pitches as easily as he does with seminal flow.

  • i agree entirely

  • @tripthelightfilm It's kind of embarrassing that this comment got thumbs upped so much.

  • I don't get Rakatung. neither do I get dumbasses like him.

    they just seem so... dumb.

  • hey, Tmartin3, let me guess. your favorite band is dream theater? and a very close second is rush. quit worrying about technicalities and just enjoy it.dude. people like you give music a bad name. so what if there not shredding 100 notes a minute? at least their enjoying it. and who says their not allowed to?

  • they're good its just a shit video

  • Try listening to the various videos of Jeff Mangum performing solo. You might change your mind.

  • too bad you don't get it.

  • you're def.

    Lyrically stunning.

This band gives me chills listen to the cd where it's easier to hear. Live shows are hard, with people yelling and all that.

    I hate you.

  • What's your point? If people like listening to it, who gives a fuck.

    I personally find this __INCREDIBLE__

  • music will always have a different significant meaning to other people. thats the beauty of it. its how certain things are interpreted, and to what level of meaning it can have on the person listening. all music should be respected, no matter your opinion.

  • maybe not all music :P

  • well when i say music, i mean real music. not the pathetic excuse for music that people listen to that has no significant meaning to anything or anyone other than pussy, money, weed, ass, and getting laid.

  • thats what i was getting at lol. but i agree with you, all music should be appreciated if it is genuine.

  • im only 14...and i know ho this band is there trhe shit...they need get back together even though jeefffff magnum just played like just played a random show in pittsburgh!!!

  • sooo...14 huh?

  • I LOVE YOU JEESUS CHARIIIIIIST

  • great song great tune

over all just amazing but y does he have to include jesus

  • why not

  • album is based off holocaust. maybe some irony there? idk

  • You're right, what was he thinking. You should have just written the song

  • HOLY SHIT HAHAHAHAHA.

Did anyone see him put on the wig just to have hair like the rest of the band? Brilliant.

    ?

  • if only they stayed around longer.

  • fuckin insane!!

  • i would kill to see them live

  • what kind of music do you listen to? I like it i dont know why i do but i do

  • It's unique, it's catchy, I love the lyrics, and it's got style.

You're entitled to your own musical tastes, just make sure not to bash other people's for theirs.

  • well, you just have to listen to their album 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea'. the lyrics are surreal. masterpiece. woohooo

  • how is it good? well that all depends on how you look at it, context is everything. this is a bad video of a performance that is less than stellar. but if you want to know why 'in the 'aeorplane over the sea' is one of the greatest albums of all time, it wont take 5 minutes to explain why. it would take at least a 2,000 word essay. do you really want to know?

  • my goodness, you're an idiot...

    greatest album ever?

    wow... what a bloody idiot.

  • erule everyone has an opinion, hitler hated jews and you think im an idiot, and i love 'in the aeroplane over the sea' and regard it as a misunderstood masterpiece that which like most great art IS misunderstood, especially by morons like you. now is my opinion harmful to others in any way? do i go out and massacre all the people who dont think the same way as me? no, i never forced my opinion on you, let me know what your favorite album is. then we can talk.

  • u just compared your love for this album with the holocaust. great album, bad analogy

  • are you kidding? ok ok, first things first, i never compared the holocaust to this, i just mentioned it in the same sentence and even if i was trying to compare anything, this album is partily about the holocaust anyway. re read what i wrote.

  • learn how to spell before you start spouting ridiculousness all over the interweb.

    thanks.

  • Yes, it is the greatest album ever. Fag.

  • Umm...there are a lot of people, including me, who consider it to be at least in contention for greatest album ever. It's amazing, and just because you don't think it should be doesn't make someone an idiot for thinking it is.

  • hear hear.

I definitely see where you are coming from. This live version is shite, nothing like the album version.

& anyone that thinks otherwise is just fooling themselves because they are such 'hardcore' fans

  • if you say so. the terrible sound quality doesn't do much for it, but the performance is excellent.

  • looks like a prom night, with disco ball and stuff. so 90s, i love it :( i wish i was there

  • That guitar is soooo dirty awesome

  • athens is a shithole
