DIsney didn't come up with this, like all his films they are based on others stories or myths. Merlyn's owl is legend like himself, and shows up in many versions of the Arthurian legend. Read the Once and Future King, a classic by T.H White that this film is obviously based on.

I've heard they bear similarities. I know that Archimedes shows up in many of the Arthurian legends.However, this movie was a major part of my childhood and Dreiburg in "Watchmen" said specifically that his ship was named after Archimedes from "The Sword and the Stone."I'm quite aware,have been since I saw this movie when I was 7,possibly younger, that Disney didn't make up the legend of King Arthur.I've just always loved this movie and reserve the right to love this interperetation of the owl.

Incredible animation...a work of art. I honetly prefer the old movies than the new ones today. They're stupid, with a really stupid plot that has so many "funny" elements to it that it gets really old. These movies are classics, and I'll never forget this one, as it was one of my favorites.
