The book is excellent, I dare say personal top 5 sci-fi, when it came out as a movie, it was during that weird era, when graphics weren't very advanced, and when there were little enough sci-fi work, making that classic theater dramatizations standard. Yes I understand why you find it silly, I however hold the opinion that the movie was quite good when it came out, and still is - though probably better for those who read the book in advance.

They never explained why Feyd is the only Harkonen on Arrakis to speak in a British accent. I'm going to fill in the holes and say he was raised by a British nanny that he eventually lost his virginity to... at 10.
I'll be honest - I read the book, and I must admit if one is not familiar with the novel then the film will seem utterly implausible and completely impenetrable and more like a trippy disjointed modern art masterpiece rather than anything which one would want to willingly watch.

@ShereKhan77 Fair enough, but I don't watch those kinds of films. I have seen a number of David Lynch films but I cannot really enjoy them, they're simply too weird for me. I watched Dune with a friend and we just couldn't stop laughing, we thought it was ridiculous. I like Sting so I cut out his bits, but I didn't like the rest of the film much. I would still say it's one of the worst films I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of films.

American Pie is a shit movie but at least it doesn't crap over source material, has consistent pacing, shows rather than tells, gives the audience enough information to know what's going on, and doesn't introduce major characters themes or settings in the last half hour. It's a bad movie but beats Dune or at least the 3 hour version I watched, can't imagine how bad the theatrical cut was.

Sting was a redeeming feature of an otherwise poor adaptation. The 2000 miniseries was even worse.
The moment is ripe for a new director to make a name for himself with a great adaptation...
