Such a wonderful movie. I watched it on netflix. This is why Iove the internet, I probably would never have even heard of this movie otherwise. Great acting, great story, great movie!
What a movie!!!!...what a wonderful screen play. The characters are mind blowing beauty and of course some funnier moments as well. The bonding of a old man with a kid cant be portrayed any better than this...So well deserved OSCAR.
can somebody explain me the scene when russian soldiers come to the family and ask if they can wash their hands and then they're answeered no by the Czechs -- what was the symbolism of that scene?I thought this was like "we russians want to become forgiven" and Czechs like "no way". Washing hands means exactly this in post-christian european culture (remember Pontius Pilatus doing it)
A small correction: they didn't forget it since they didn't regard it as invasion or occupation from the very beginning. For them, it was more like doing justice I guess.
This is the the best thing Ive ever seen. There is so many beautuful moments in this film that can not be forgiven. If I could write somthing like this part is. My God, I wonna see more movies like those are. Thenk You for this.
@hikkichavez Your, from Japan right? I just didn't expect someone who is from completely another part of the world to know Czech movie.... I was just surprised :)
@hikkichavez Because Kolja is an innocent child. It is nonsense to take revenge injury commited by any politicians (or even community) upon innocent child. My grandfather spent about 2 years of WWII in the concentration camp. After WWII he obtained three German girls (Sudetten/Czech Germans) for aid on his farm. And he saved one of them (she was 16) from rape by an soviet soldier and a partisan(?). He resisted with a gun in his arm.
@hikkichavez Ad: "yup, i love it.. it so touching! why?" It is touching because Kolya is an innocent child and it woud be a felony to revenge upon innocent childs felonies of adult member of their nations, for example. Childs cannot be made responsible for them.

@traplican oh okay, thanks for that, but i'm not seeing it that way. i just like it because its a father and child movie... even thought he's not the real father of kolja.. anyway thanks for that delight :)
@hikkichavez No, it isn't his son, although ... stepson yes. It is a stepfather and stepson movie but the marriage was furthermore dummy so that mother of the boy could leave the Soviet Union. This man has aceded the dummy marriage becouse he had badly needed money. But mother of the child has run to BRD and greatmother (living in Czechoslovakia at that time) has died. So ambulance-men deliver the boy to the man which was declared as the husband of one's mother.
@hikkichavez .. correction : childern, excuse my English ... Childern represent hopes for correct relations in future and to revenge upon them means to destroy these hopes.

the mama went to germany and the grandma died so he had to keep him which was a really good idea seeing how it was a fake marriage.. and then he ended up liking each other.. I forgot how it ened... oh the mom came back.

The invasion was so long so the soldiers behaved like a neighbor does (they forgot they were invading soldiers). It's that simple, no religion stuff.
