Underneath the dancing couple there is a small metal support which connects to a magnetized surface. Below this there is a spindle with a small rubber wheel which is placed under the turntable. When it revolves it allows the dancers to move. The item in the background is not a record but a thin cardboard cut-out to promote Jack Payne's records. Originally it would have been in a Columbia record dealers shop.
Whenever I hear this song I see in my mind a blue cover 'Saville' L.P of Jack Payne & His BBC Dance Orchestra 1928 -1931 - that image is changing now!
So cute! I want it.

A great record - and what is that gadget with the dancers? Very amusing. Is that a promotional record at the back?

I know what you mean! Anyone got a copy of "down by the old front gate"? That is one of my favourite Jack Payne recordings, a real "drag"!
