  • Are the number of steps in a stepper motor determined by the type of work you would want the stepper motor to do? I'm thinking about stepper motors on 3 axis CNC routers, where precision is important. Would those types of motors have say 3600 steps instead of 360 if you wanted tight machining tolerances? Would all stepper motors be controlled by a micro-controller or just some types? Thanks for the explanation.

The stepper motors i showed were only small, and only capable of driving something like a scanner, though this would be through gears.

For a CNC application, you would need larger motors, and some sort of gear box.

One i just looked up has a 1.8 degree step angle, which is 200 steps per rotation.

If you gear this down as a 10:1 ratio, you would get more force to move the arms, and 2000 steps, is that accurate enough for you ?
