Hey, SME, thanks for not letting me play this in my playlist so I can listen to it while I work. I really appreciate having to stop and find it again on youtube just because of whatever bullshit reason you have for blocking playlist use.
@2kavaliwtisa I read it in a magazine, I'm not sure which one... It might have been Entertainment Weekly, or like, People. Check it out, I think it was EW :)
i couldn't figure out where "guy" got the money for the piano. he was already in hock to the bank for the studio time, right? This was my favorite song in the movie (there were some I didn't like much at all ;-)....I love that many of the lines were adlibbed...in particular the "No, I love you" line. Cute flick.
@misanthrope8 His dad told him (at the end when they were listening to his recording) that he had a few hundred quid put away for him, so he could get a place when he got London. He thought fuck it he needs to buy this girl a piano. That way my interpretation of it.
@cbrandom That's a very good question, and one that only John Carney can answer! :o) Good spot tho, it totally passed me by. To be fair, as the Irish currency was pounds and pence until they adopted the Euro, it's likely that older people still use terms like 'quid' when talking about money...
@pgI0897 That's a good point, I didn't really think about that. Did Ireland have Irish pounds (like Northern Ireland currently does, and its a pain in the ass to exchange them when you leave N.I. lol)?
@cbrandom Well N.I. uses UK currency and always has done, altho some banks there - like in remote parts of Scotland in the north - are allowed to issue privately printed notes. These are the ones that are a pain in the hole to try and spend anywhere else because nowhere will accept them!
The Republic only used UK currency while they were under British rule, which ended in 1928. After that it became Irish pounds and pence until the Euro came along. They decimilised at the same time as UK too.
i really liked this movie, but i had really high hopes to be blown away from all the reviews, but that's okay. i love that the movie was simple and straightforward (the plot is very loose.) but the fantastic soundtrack helps drives the plot and movie forward. it's very realistic because all that crazy ass killing, falling off the bridge, abducted by aliens things hollywood tends to put in movies doesn't happen in real life often.
@TheGirlDreams She said him "Miluji tebe". "I love you" in Czech language. (I've extracted this from wikipedia, because I am Spanish and I do not know the Czech language.)

Dont worry about the plot or the storyline of this movie. It all becomes very obvious as you watch and become drawn into one of the most simple yet brilliant movies of 2007. Once is so captivating, so mesmorising it is one of the finest movies i have ever seen.
I love Once, it's gotta be one of my favourite films. I watched it last night and cried at this bit, even though i've already watched it a million times before.
Eh...no doubt - one of the greatest and most sensitive songs ever written. The film - just like you said - is beatiful, simple. Life is simple and beatiful.
ive seen this movie twice, love every song preformed and believe that the whole movie is a metaphor for life. people come then one week later are gone....its profoundly beautiful and utterly amazing. The whole movie is tastefully made and the end is realistic, simplistic brilliance.

I love this song, it's inspiring. The movie, though reminded me that in this world you need music, without it you would be lost and would probabaly never find your best friend or the person you love, somtimes music can even help you find your self. You need music more then you may think. Thats why I like this song so much, thats why I love music and will try my hardest for it not to be taken away from me.......
I really don`t understand the critique towards the ending of this movie. It is, in fact, one of the best and thought-provoking endings I have ever seen in a movie.
With this and Leave, the soundtrack leaves nothing to desire. It is absolutely perfect.
I think the ending was absolutely perfect. In a way, it was sort of a happy ending; by meeting each other, they became better people. They realized their dreams and responsibilities and the sacrifices they have to make. It was a beautiful ending and the last shot was just gorgeous.
although she's very young in 'Once' she shows a very good talent as a singer, as a musician and as an actress; her breakdown during playing piano was first class work as actress and adds drama to that rendition
I think this movie resonated with people is that it accurately portrayed the reality of life, including loss and sorrow. But sorrow can be the vehicle to deeper understanding and joy...see Kahlil Gibran, for instance.
The ending just wasn´t one of those you would expect in a Hollywood High Concept film, but Once isn´t one, so there you go ;) To me this ending is just realistic and that´s why this film appealed to me. And the music is just stunning!
I loved this film, I sobbed when she started crying in this bit... I was dissapointed by the end though, It should have ended differently - dont want to ruin it for anyone so I'll just leave it at that

Well i can understand your opinion in the movie, but personally I found brilliance in the simplicity of this movie. None of those special effects or plot twists to make things complicated and annoying. And the music again shares such a beautiful yet simple feeling.

i'm in love with this film and this scene is my favorite one it's so moving and emotional and i love her voice its gorgeous and the whole film is so good i love the way its filmed love Once i love it to bits
I must disagree, this movie was amazing, including the plot. You won't like it if you're used to western romance films. Probably because they're all garbage.

Perhaps you don't like it because it is not Gestalt. It is not tied up with a tidy bow into a "whole." Yet, it is as Gestalt as life gets, and that is what makes it such a lovely film.

it's connected with many musicians that director have met and they were saying: 'once i get everything organise (in my live), i will start taking care of music...' or something like that. and it's about main character, too. ;)
I completely agree. I loved the whole movie and then came the ending and i couldn't help but throw my popcorn at the tv because the ending made me so mad xD
I loved that moment where she broke down in the mid sentence while she was singing....when she started the song I was so pulled in by the emotion in her voice along with the haunting, melancholy notes of the piano. The lyrics were so easy to relate to, and so sad...when she stopped singing mid sentence to cry, there was just this silence that left me wondering, 'how in the world was she able to leave me with such a strong feeling with just her voice and a piano...?'
how can something be so sad and beautiful at the same time.
:S

it's connected with many musicians that director have met and they were saying: 'once i get everything organise (in my live), i will start taking care of music...' or something like that. and it's about main character, too. ;)

Truly beautiful!
