Hey God showed me that there are a lot of people who need someone. Go outside of our comfort zone. You can dream some crazy dream no one else has dreamed before. For me, that dream was to reach out to the people around me at school and make a difference. I do that by sitting with people who are alone at lunch, and boy is a chain reaction beginning! Would you like to be the next link???? Let me know:) You are just waiting to be used by God, no need to wait. Lets go!
while i respect doula's and the work that they do, i cant' say i totally agree with all of these women's testimonies. as one woman stated, that all the decison making was left up to her while having a home birth. well..okay that's nice, but are you a doctor? do you know what's best health wise for you and your baby at that moment. i mean, child birth is dangerous. anything can go wrong. also, there is nothing wrong with using drugs, it's not only painful for you but for the baby too.
All the women in the video had hospital births. Each one made their own educated decision on whether or not to receive drugs. If there had been a medical emergency, then the doctors and nurses would have advised on the course of action needed. A doula's role in birth is to give unbiased emotional and physical support to the client, whether they choose drugs or not. The doula answers the client's questions about drugs and procedures, but CANNOT make any medical decision for them.
@abigailien- when women receive drugs in labor, it interferes with the hormonal balance that helps the baby adjust to the process. all interventions have their place, but their routine use puts moms and babies at risk. birth is not an illness, it is a normal physiological process.
@abigailien Birth is not painful on the baby, it is natural. Is it work for both mom and baby? Yes, but not painful in a negative aspect to child. What can be painful and harmful actually is drugs use during labor, as they can and do have side effects to the baby as well as can change the natural course of labor and contractions, etc. If a mom still decides meds are best for her, than more power to her, it is her choice in the end. But at least she will make these choices knowing pros and cons.
@abigailien This is a terribly outdated and patriarchal view to take. If you look at the data, you'll discover that home births are JUST as safe as hospital births, and in some cases, safer. The infant and maternal mortality rate does not increase when birth occurs at home. Birth is NOT an emergency, it's a normal physiological process and will go beautifully the vast majority of the time with no intervention or assistance at all.
It's nice to learn about the Doula's role & show others that they can still have a natural birth in a hospital with the support of a professional who is there to follow YOUR birth plan and not a clock. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video! I really liked that you showed how doulas can help SUPPORT mom's choice regardless of your own beliefs. Some videos portray hospitals to be bad, discouraged meds/epidurals/interventions, and you focused on what is important, allowing the mom to choose and educating her! At the hospital where I work, we are privileged to always have a 1:1 nurse/patient ratio during labor/delivery so we are able to provide much needed support. I applaud you for this honest documentary!!!!
I love the video. It brought tears to my eyes as I remembered how hiring Amanda as our doula impacted our birth experience. Things did not go as planned, but Amanda really held everyone together and the support and encouragement she provided is unmeasurable. I am forever grateful to her and her mission for other women. 5 stars

Powerful testimony!
I would love to see data, if any is available, comparing outcomes with and without doulas for women who want pain medication.
