In October 1963, during moderately rough seas, Lt. James H. Flatley III USN landed a KC-130F Hercules re-fueler with a normal landing weight of 130000 pounds on the deck of U.S.S. Forrestal (CVA-59). The mission, to determine if the C-130 could be used as a "Super COD" aircraft. An L.S.O. named Daugherty gave Flatley an engine "chop" while still three or four feet off the deck. There were several landings and take-offs. The rest as they say is history.
Actually it does have brakes they once had a blow out on one of the front tires landing at White sands trying to see if they could stop in a shorter distance.
@Membrane556 The orbiter has brakes on the rear wheels, but there has only been one landing at White Sands, and the tires were fine. The orbiter itself did get damaged from the sand and that is why there has only been one landing there. Tires were originally considered as a cause of the Columbia disaster, but were eventually ruled out. There was one orbiter which experienced a blow out, but it was not due to braking.
@bmwnasher even more than that, most people don't realize just how massive the shuttle is. In just weight alone, I don't think the carrier deck could support the orbiter just sitting there, let alone slamming down on the deck. Plus the orbiter is worth almost 3 times what the entire carrier and its contents are worth.
Carriers have different types of cable settings for the different sizes of aircraft that land. With the proper mods this would be possible. Whether they could ever make it safe or cost efficient is a different story....
@timcaywood would never happen. The orbiter weighs more than anything that can land on a carrier, not to mention you could write off 12+ billion dollars if you mess up. You can buy almost 3 new carriers for the same price!! Also NASA doesn't want the military involved in the shuttle program. That was the reason they bought and developed their own 747 transport planes instead of using the C5A for transport.
Actually it might just be possible if the Shuttle was equiped with a tow hook, it only needs a 3 mile runway with un-aided (apart from a deployable parachute) brakeing.
not possible a real space shuttle run way is three miles long and dont say it is not because i went to the JFK space station and i got to walk it a real carrier is about 2 and a half football fields
Wow... A peacful little hot air balloon in thr background at, 1:20 Then The S.S.A. Lands on an aircraft carrier...? BTW... What's up with a hot air ballon miles out to sea?
Uh-Uh, no way. Cool video but completely impossible. Perhaps if they had a carrier with a 3 mile runway, just maybe. Or when Project Constellation gets started, you may be able to land the Orion capsule on the carrier. But I think they would choose a water landing over trying to attempt that stunt.
High approach flew through the glideslope drifting left of centerline, speed was high having shallow Angle of Attack while still remaining left of center line just before the ramp !should have waved off! still hooked est 2nd wire and stopped off the runway. Unsafe pass with unacceptable deviations when wave off was possible. Zero Points.
Folks, the shuttle has no "go around" capability, if it misses all three of the arresting cables, it will go straight into the drink. This is a very unrealistic animation.
Sorry, you just can't get a shuttle to fly that slowly. It is so heavy that in order to achieve lift, it has to go damn fast. Normal fighter jets land on carriers at higher speeds than that.
ummm no, the shuttle could never land on a carrier. They land at KSC, and if the weather is bad they land in California or somehwere out west. If weather sucks at both points, they delay landing
wow if you belive that can actually happen i feel for you. first of all the shuttle is going to fast to land on a carrier, second of all the shuttle doesnt have the equipment, third of all the wires that would catch the shuttle would snap, and fourth of all the landing gear of the shuttle would snap off! its hard enough to hit a 500 foot 2 mile long runway from space, think about hitting the fourty foot box that has the cables on the carrier from 34 mile up!
Well, not only is the space shuttle increaqdibly heavy, but for it to land, some of the longest runways in the world are required. Theres not even a remote possibility of this ever happening in real life.
This cannot ever happen that thing comes in to fast and weighs more than any plane in the Fleet maybe even 2-3 times more.. Also the Cables would snap and the Arresting gear would Tube lock .. yes I was in the AG for 4 years.. Nice theory though
what are the keyboard shortcuts to take off
thanks

not possible shuttle would need to be on full power in case of a missed arrestor wire shuttle only glides in.its got no power

of course it´s possible, you just need low enough speed (and in the case of the carrier: tackling the weight of a space shuttle on landing)
the real thing uses parachutes and a many mile long runway to end the trip
but it´s possible...

180 knot headwind or tail wind? A glider cant fly that far that level. In reality that would have smacked into the back of the carrier.

actually its not possible to land a space shuttle on a carrier.cuz the runway in a carrier is 1/2 of a 1000 ft runway so its v v short.
anyways but still nice landing dude.:-D

A fun thing to do is to raise gear (while on deck) and catshot into the water and watch the shuttle skip across the water
