Sanding the bottom of the tip is one of the most commonest mistakes when re-tipping using non-laminated tips in my view. It rarely gives you a flat surface as pressure is applied from the edges of the tip with the fingers. That's why you can see outer the circle of the tip being sanded off first in this clip. Instead use a blade flush to the base of the tip and scrape it to remove the chalk finish. Gel glue works best with two surfaces as smooth as glass, not rough from sanding or scored.
@cambridgepoolseries nice comment, but on this point I will have to disagree with the part about sanding.
The reason you can see the area being sanded from outside to center of the tip , is because almost all tips are made with a concave base & not flat ,(very important point) even the most exspensive of tips will need to be sanded in this manner.. "but do remember to use a flat surface to sand on" sorry, but thanks for taking the tipe to post a comment. cheers.. K
Kev, thank you so much for all of the inspiration and dedication you have. I have only playen about 8 hours of snooker so far, but I am already mastering technique, and I am learning from my mistakes. I watched this video too, as I bought my first snooker cue, and I fitted it with a medium Talisman pro tip. Your advice on cutting and gluing are good, but you failed to mentioned that the shaping is very important, likely because of the time allowed. Please make a video on perfecting a dome tip :)
An oversized tip in 10 minutes - well done! What kind of tip shape do you suggest to have to get the greatest contact onto the cue ball? I am after a big tip but not a mushroom.... cheers. James
@jesusfreak1975 Hi James, actually I personally prefer a standard dome shape, having said that, my tip is 10mm on a 9.75mm ferrule. (oversized)
Most of the players I know use 9 - 9.5mm , I only know a few who use either mushroom shape, or reverse flower pot / chimney pot shape.
I would try lots of different brands of tip, (hard/soft) as well as different shapes until you find one that "you" think is the best, because it is all a matter of "feeling" comfortable on every shot.
thanks for your msg. I have been playing for about 15 years now and used to use a domed tip but found that reduced the contact point as mentioned. I really someone who can stick one on for me and shape it so i feel more comfortable on screw shots in particular.
@jesusfreak1975 Hello again James, what area of the country are you in?
I'm way down south, if this is any good to you. If not I might be able to suggest a good cue doctor to sort it for you. Perhaps nearer to your neck of the woods..
Failing that ,have you asked in your local club if anyone could sort it ?
I only suggest this because to post a cue to have a tip fitted would cost lot's .
let me know what you decide to do & how you get on. cheers, Kevy.
i have my cue i think the tip hs come lose on it just wounderin if i could just take the tip off and put it back on again or do i have to put a brand new on up if u could msg me back would be very greatful... gd vidieo m8
@b3nja100 .. Hi there, you should be able to re-fit the old tip quite easily, just make sure you remove any old glue from the old tip & ferrule first...( because this is probably why it has failed this time) but if you have to glue on a tip, then why not a new one? surely it would make more sense to replace it , rather than put back a tip which has already come off once .... It's only an opinion, but good luck anyway ,..Kevy
@kevy62 ... cheers just wounderin cuz its like a new tip only been on few mounths but if its knakerd all ready then will have to change it.. cheers kevy
@b3nja100 .... Sorry but on average tip lasts me around 3-4 weeks, I tend to forget that most players don't play every day & night , so I do appologise. If it is 3 months old then you may as well put a new one on unless you don't have one close to hand, in which case just re-glue it & it should last you ages.. just because it is old does not mean it's knckered, but you must re-sand it, so it is level & all th old glue is removed, before you re-fit it... cheers, Kevy.
good vid. didnt have gel glue in hand, but i had some Jbweld epoxy.I used that. I tried contact glue before, that didnt hold. Epoxy should hold(liquid steel) =D
they do take some getting used to, but when you do , well they do suit me , but perhaps due to their cost , prehaps will not suit everyone.. cheers,Kevy.
nice video but what tip did you use? ive brought some elkmasters and cue cement is that ok? also which is the best softest tip i like soft tips mostly
you know if you use rough sandpaper, or a hard filing tool, this can rip some of the fibers of the cue tip. Also, what tip did you use? It looks like a blue diamond, but Im not sure.
hi, yes you are quite right, the use of a course file or sandpaper will rip the fibers from the tip, possibly destroying it in the process.
As for the tip i've used to make this video, it's not a diamond or elkmaster, it's a tip i've been getting from China for a while now, it's incredibly hard & grips superbly.
Sorry i can't give you the name of it, cos' it dosn't have one. lol.....K
I will produce a tip guide at some point, mainly as i have been asked to make one before.
Although it will only be an opinion & not to be looked upon as gospel.
Tips are purely a matter of choice i'm afraid, & what might suit me ,may be too hard or soft for you. Thanks for the comment, I will sort one out soon...K

gregg709 2 years ago
I use them because, they grip like mad, have a more consistant "feel" need little or no re-shaping at all, & last for ages.
Downside:
even the soft pro tips are loads harder than Elks, they do sound funny & 3 tips cost as much as 50 Elks.
The tip is the only part that has a direct effect on the cue ball.
So remove the tip as a variable, & see a marked improvement in both confidence & technique.
That said, tip's are a matter of preference.
Advise, try some, then try some more...K
