The teams seem so unfair =P, Tony Gunawan is known to be one of the greatest doubles players of all time and is a former world champion, Taufik Hidayat is also a former world champion and Olympic Chamion while on the other team, Howard Bach's biggest tournament is only the world championships
The issue I have with the scoring system is the following: under certain circumstances, one side could have a greater likelihood of winning the next point after winning the previous one, which would lead to a greater separation in the scores and thereby reducing the likelihood of a tight-scoring game.
@thejym For example, the NBL scoring system has one side serve four points in a row. If my opponent has to serve four points to me in a row, it is highly likely for me to win three or four points (since a serve in badminton was never intended to be used to generate a point like in tennis). If you watch sports like basketball, after one team makes a basket, the other team then gets a chance to get on the offense. It is similar in badminton, which makes for a more pleasant game to watch.
Strange scoring system. I am deadly confused with the scoring and positioning. Odd numbers should play in left, how come Tony served in right. All is messed up. Can anyone help to clarify? Or it's just for fun and does not really matter?
@BocahMadiun This was scored using the "NBL system", which is this new league started by a few people here in the US but hasn't really caught on fully. The players here have agreed to play a match under this system, but of course you will continue to see 21-point games in international play for the next few years to come.
@thejym The way the scoring works is first to 17 points, each side serves 4 points in a row (regardless of who wins or loses). If it's 16-16, next point wins. I think there was a mistake made in the scoring of this game by the ref, but don't sweat it.
it's nice to see worlds greatest single player played doubles.. why don't make an exhibition game between LCW&LD vs. TH&PG & the cash prize is $500,000 for the winner $100,000 for the losers ^^,
its a scoring system used by the NBL ( i think they're the only ones using it). 4 services per player. Similar to table tennis doubles, 2 services per player, then it switches sides.
this looks like a fun game. I really don't like the umpire, he made a LOAD of mistakes on the scoring but its only an exhibition so i guess its okay..
@thejym Personally, I think this scoring system is total crap. What's the purpose of it? It doesn't make it any more or less fair for the players then the point-per-play rally scoring to 21. They're just creating more confusion with this scoring system.

Gunawan and Taufik, possibly two of the best indonesian badminton players that have ever lived... and strangely, not the best team!
Taufik is good though, he should give it a try when he retires from singles, he shouldnt be a coach lol, u cant teach THAT backhand

at 9 -7 and reverse 7 - 9 and continue on 8 - 9, but it suppose to be 10 - 7, on taufik and tony

??? i don't get the scoring... its kinda rally.. but why is each side serving twice with the same person..?
something new?
Kyluwa 2 years ago
Since this is an NBL (National Badminton League) exhibition game, it uses NBL's 17-point scoring system.
First team to 17 points wins, no win by two.
Each side takes turns serving four serves in a row (by the same player for those four points).
thejym 2 years ago
don't like the NBL scoring...
from 15pts to 21pts is still ok...since it easier...
but this 17 pts is just messy...
