i wonder if they are playing live .. because this is a good performance here.. i do remember in an interview paul saying that in germany in their early years..the p.a. sucked and they had to shout all the time
@klepetar No microphones. I think they're miming, though the Beatles were very capable live, particularly before 1966 when the screaming fans ruined their motivation.
@sirpaisley What usually happened was the performance was recorded live but then they mimed to it for the broadcast. For better sound quality I should imagine. Even when The Beatles did Hey Jude on David Frost they were miming. But the mikes were on, so they could sing live also. Confusing? Watch Hey Jude and you'll note Johnmissing his cue to sing, but he's singing on the track!
@douglasamarshall Interesting. I can imagine a lot of sound problems with all of the screaming girls and the bad quality monitors of the day. I just didn't notice any mics in this performance.
One of the best guitar performances ever by John Lennon on the first song ("You Can't Do That").... great to watch The Beatles in their hayday (even if it IS a lip synch)
We were in elementary school and one of the guys wore some beatle boots to school and was sent home. his mother and father came back and he was back that afternoon :D. it was a struggle during these years kinds. later.

@IDLERACER 3/28/11: Great commentary for us RIC 12 fans. While one scouts around other videos of the era, really, quite a few other groups were picking up on them, both the 12 & the 6. See the Knickerbockers, & "Every Mother's Son" , The Turtles, The Hollies, etc. If anyone posesses one of those early RIC12's, they probably could sell it, and retire for the rest of their lives! Happy jingle-jangle 2 U.
Check out this new You Tube sensation - they're called the Beatles. They just might hit it big like Justin Beiber. All they need to is get millions of screaming teenage fans and create a manic type mania around the world. (Sarcasm, for some who don't get it.)
It was just easier to have groups lip sync the songs for a television broadcast. Some tv studios weren't equipted for all the complicated microphone placement and mixing required to pull it off. Plus I'm sure some of the groups would rather lip sync than risk sounding bad because of a incompetent sound man.

@Tickbryan I totally agree with you. Do you think that the Beach Boys turned to lip syncing ? I know that this is a Beatles site, but I just asked myself that question. The Beatles were N° 1, in the UK, and the Beach Boys were N°1 in the USA
@misstsarina , i've seen the old Beech Boys footage where they were lip syncing. If they played on American Bandstand they lip synced, because that's the only way Bandstand did it.
How ironic that George is being interviewed by Cathy McGowan, the inspiration for the ficyional Susan Camphy, "the posh bird who gets everything wrong".

This performance (from the spring of 1964) was probably the first time a Rickenbacker electric 12-string was ever captured on film. By the end of that year, almost every lead guitarist of note had one. Pete Townshend, Carl Wilson, Roger McGuinn. The president of the company handing a free one over to George while he was in the states a couple of months earlier, was probably the most brilliant marketing move of all time.
Back in the sixties lip-sync was the norm on TV (easier for producers, though often tracks were pre-recorded rather than just the record).. In fact Ready Steady Go was the first English TV pop show to go live - later in 64 I think, but after the Beatles' various appearances on the show. Actually its the norm now if you think about it (most music videos!). And, heck, wouldn't you rather see the Beatles up close and miming than not at all?
Must have been really weird for the kids in the audience to be brought in thinking they were going to see the Beatles, only to have to hear piped in music and watch the greatest band in the world lip sync a foot away from them. Then again, maybe they didn't feel as weird as the Beatles did having to pose like this.
@edkollin So is everything else from my youth, it seems. They could have a drive in, I guess..but the people working there wouldn't know how to speak english and someone would probably mug you..or you'd get caught in crossfire or step on a meth head in restroom. Then the neighbors would complain of the noise (there's no more open space near towns) the movie production houses would yell they're not making enough money and we'd pay 16 dollars each to eat the garbage they serve. I prefer memories..
Probably the best pop TV show of is own or any time. The bands, the clothes, the new-ness and inventing-as-we-go-along attitude of that time. The show went out live on early Friday evening. The mods and wannabe-mods watched it religiously ("The Weekend Starts Here" was its slogan). It only lasted three years or so but it really really mattered to England's youth culture.
@QuarryBanksy This show should have aired in America, but probably didn't because by 1964, ABC, CBS and NBC were beginning to convert from black-and-white to color (NBC was mostly color by '64; ABC and CBS would convert over the next couple of years).
Had this show been taped in color, it's very likely one of the three American networks would have picked it up.
But since it was in black-and-white, it didn't air in the 'States until reruns aired on cable's Disney Channel in the mid 1980's.
Can you imagine being there and dancing away 1 foot away from John Lennon??? That interview was so cute! I bet Cathy got asked out a lot by the band! I wonder where she is today??
even unplugged they sound really good!

It was just easier to have groups lip sync the songs for a television broadcast. Some tv studios weren't equipted for all the complicated microphone placement and mixing required to pull it off. Plus I'm sure some of the groups would rather lip sync than risk sounding bad because of a incompetent sound man.

The Drive In movie theaters the Beatles liked so much are pretty much gone from America
edkollin 1 year ago

QuarryBanksy 1 year ago
@QuarryBanksy This show should have aired in America, but probably didn't because by 1964, ABC, CBS and NBC were beginning to convert from black-and-white to color (NBC was mostly color by '64; ABC and CBS would convert over the next couple of years).
Had this show been taped in color, it's very likely one of the three American networks would have picked it up.
But since it was in black-and-white, it didn't air in the 'States until reruns aired on cable's Disney Channel in the mid 1980's.
