I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that, aside from the unnecessary replacement of Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christiansen, this is a better ending than the original. With all the shots of all the planets, and the much better music (sorry, Mr. Williams, but "Yub Nub" is not exactly one of your finest pieces), it just feels much more like the ending of a SAGA this way.

One reason that it was better for Sebastian Shaw to be Anakin's ghost was because the was the way he looked when he brought balance back to the force. That's who he was when he finally redeemed himself.
A reason that it was better for Hayden Christensen was because that was who he was at his prime. That's who he was when he was still part of the light side of the force, and hadn't yet fallen.
I liked the newer ending better than the original. Don't get me wrong, I like them both, I just prefer the newer. I prefer the original ending although I get the pov's that favor the new version. One of the factors that puts me in the "orignal ending' camp is my preference of the orignal Anakin Skywalker's spirit. It seemed to fit the ending better than the young version in the new version. If the new version had retained the original Anakin, it would be a tough vote for me between the 2 versions. What I really want is a re-release of the original IV,V,VI on DVD remastered in anamorphic format.
It is always a bummer when an instant classic gets tampered with. But I do think it makes more sense to have Hayden Christensen there. Seeing as Luke Skywalker died the moment he turned to the dark side and became Darth Vader. I guess it depends if you're a fan of the story line, or if you're just a nostalgic type.

Pacing of Empire was one of best I've seen in all movies. It told like 5+ stories developed character progression and a lot of time unfolded perfectly in only 2.5hrs. Ep I carried like 10%, II 20% and 70% was crammed in ep III.
I'm not nostalgic and invite change, just has to be good. And crap like "midichlorians" is just plain $hite!

I really like this new ending because it kinda connected everything full circle. If you watch the series from beginning to end, the last you'll see anakin is in revenge of the sith. They accepted his mistake and they will live on as spirits of the Jedi knights and friends.

Apart from the Hayden Christensen ghost and the "WEESA FREE", I prefer this ending to the original. One of the few changes in the special editions I actually like.
If you have seen the timeline of everything in star wars, the empire rises after many years again, over throes the new republic. And takes over everything. In the end, the bad guys win.

@AdamElseify Try to... think.... of it this way. Anakin became corrupted when he was still young and was a sith lord until Luke changed him back at his death. After this happens he sheds away his corruption and reappears as a force spirit in his innocent younger self he is no longer Vader. Obi Wan and Yoda appear older because they never turned to the dark side and thus didn't need to appear young.

The new music sucks so much and everything is horribly edited and rushed. It just sucks the emotion out of the whole scene....so it fits in with the prequels nicely.

@godspeedf24 I'm starting to feel like I'm the only Star Wars fan who liked the prequels. seriously, what is wrong with them? they are fun, they have romance, they have action, they have more Jedi scenes, they have epic battles and light saber fights, they are more emotional (in my opinion, 'cause Revenge of the Sith made me cry a river while I only cried a little on Return of the Jedi) and the story of howit all begun is amazing and interesting. so what is it that people have against them?

Okay its unfair if Vader can just change at the last minute and retire and old man. If he were to truely be with the force, he must be like the Jedi he originally was, plus honestly Hayden looks better, than Shaw. Or have Hayden appear, and then he loke forms into Shaw. Whatever, but Shaw makes the least sense. Why does Anakin get a make over and nobody else!?

I personaly dont care what ending I watch.Its still a great ending of a great saga, most people think star wars is just a nerdy sci-fi film, its much more a saga of life, love, and true friendship.If you are a real Star Wars fan you wouldnt mind seeing Hayden as Anakins ghost.He was young when last time he was in touch with the light side of the Force.No matter what I still love Star Wars and I always will.

I'd like to see a new ending in which Sebastian Shaw and Hayden Christensen appear right next to each other and then start to strangle one another while screaming "THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE" while Luke looks on in confusion and horror.

@AdamElseify Try to... think.... of it this way. Anakin became corrupted when he was still young and was a sith lord until Luke changed him back at his death. After this happens he sheds away his corruption and reappears as a force spirit in his innocent younger self he is no longer Vader. Obi Wan and Yoda appear older because they never turned to the dark side and thus didn't need to appear young.

Doing this to Star Wars is like doing plastic surgery, when i'm looking to this "NEW" ending, i feel like i'm watching a lady with fake boobs. Why Lucas changed this ending ? The original version was great, and watching this horror doesn't give me the same sensation I had when I was young... Such a pity !
