I bought the LP from the Columbia Record Club. It counted as two selections. I had the Overture on the 45. Ironically, this was the same 45 coupling for the Who's original version. If I recall correctly, the Overture was added to the CD release. One scary thing is that I remember most of the songs. If Roger and Pete got sick, I could substitute. May they never ask!
This version of OVERTURE, was not originally excluded from the LP. Few people knew it existence since it was only released as a by then 45 single with SEE ME FEEL ME as A side. This is OVERTURE differs a lot from the original WHO version. Both versions are very good. A third version you can find on the LONDON SYNPHONY ORCHESTA version. This version was recorded and played solely by PETE TOWNSHEND !!

Were can I get the whole soundtrack to the movie , I have been looking for it everywhere I can only find LP's of it, are there any CD's of it out there?
Actually, this wasn't released on the original soundtrack; it was only available as a single (45 rpm) along with the single version of "Listening to You/See Me, Feel Me". It even states that on the back of the original LP.. something like "Overture from Tommy available on Polydor [cat. number].
It was first included into the entire soundtrack in the late 80's, but only on the cassette version.
I bought this album 35 years ago because I was a big Elton John fan. Then I saw the movie at our high school. With the perverted "Fiddle About", the freaky Tina Turner "Acid Queen", the evil Cousin Kevin, Ann-Margaret rolling suggestively in canned beans with half a breast hanging out, which is like 1 and a half regular breast, I was afraid to listen to the Who and make my mind like that.
I got this gem a record shop years back. its a rare version of overture and i LOVVVVVVVVVVVE what pete did with the whole over-synthisized version. The whole soundtrack is awesome 1975! My single broke so this is a treat! Thx
@sanstitle Yes, that is true. It was a non-album B-side to the single "Listening To You / See Me Feel Me". But it was finally added to the CD re-release of the soundtrack in the 90s. It does not appear in the film itself.
Certain movies have an overture.. It is on the soundtrack of the movie print BEFORE you would even see the studio logo. You'd hear it as you got your seat. This was not only in musicals like WEST SIDE STORY, but also in epics like LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY, and even THE GREAT RACE. I wounder if during the original 1975 release of TOMMY if it had been treated in the same way? Does anyone know?
does any one remmember an ad for a allergy commercial,it had this tommy song in the background.i dont know what the product's name was but i was pist when they try to take a classic art form, just to sell some crap! love this and many other songs the who did.they should get more respect then that is all im saying.
ok, mystery solved, just gone onto itunes, this from a re-released cd, not the 1975 vinyl i have. I wish they wouldn't screw around with classic albums, stick it at the end maybe, but it's so cheesy for a powerful record like this. Shame on ya polydor.
I too have the original soundtrack album from the film and this track isn't on it. so where is it from, it's kinda cheesey, not sure if i like it, but i am curious as to where it appears? cheers
I have the original soundtrack recording and this is the first track. But you are correct, this song doe's not appear on the film. The film begins with the Prologue 1945 track from this album.
The synth backing was done by Pete. He said he kept going back and putting more overdubs on. I've always felt that synth was just right. Something about it sends shivers down my spine.
I too am a big fan of Pete's use of synthesizers. The way he played and arranged guitar, voice, synth, piano and occasional banjo and such, I find it amazing. He's waaaay more than a guitar smasher and windmill arm swinger. I like the 1975 arrangements of Tommy very much; it's as if Tommy was Quadrophenia-ized.
does anybody which who song has like the orchestra strikes at the end of it. i know that's not exactly the right thing to call it, but it's really sharp and intense sounding. i thought it was probably off of tommy, and it's not on the greatest hits i have for them. anybody know what i'm talking about?
When I heard the album about a year after its release, late '70?, nobody really was figuring it would take a life of its own. Then the stage production hit with a big splash. Soon a movie, which had fantastic performances. I really liked Ann Margaret. WOW, what mother!!!!
1 person does not like the name Tommy.
