This show was so great. I'm the same age as Lance and I kind of looked at the show for advice on girls or whatever problems he might have faced. Too many of these good shows went off too fast. I wish I could see it on dvd a few times. I remember a great scene with a sleeping bag involved and Clapton's "Lay Down Sally being played.
Its too bad this show only lasted a short time and disappeared. It was a well written show with terrific actors and really true to life stories. No show today is anywhere close to this good show. Its too bad Lance Kerwin never made it as an actor because he sure had the looks (All the girls were crazy about him), and the talent. A total boy next door actor that was very likeable. I guess its the usual story: talented child actor with lots of money gets into the party scene, takes drugs & crashes
Not a bad show, in itself. Like The Waltons, The Fitzpatricks, Eight is Enough, Little House on the Prairie, etc., one of many "wholesome" shows on TV in the late 70's. That's not a criticism, just an observation.
I love how in every single Kim Richards related video on YouTube, about 15 to 20 people think they're blowing our minds witth the "news" that Kim is Paris and Nicky Hilton's aunt. lol
television used to be sooo exciting--now its all this sex all over the screen-somethings need to be left to the imagination--and i'm sick of reality shows featuring pretty people with no talent--it is so boring--who thinks up these stupid shit
Reality TV isn't reality, many have been caught using scripts. I find them to be a waste of air space, except for shows like Design Star, Project Runway, etc that are actually about people's talent. MTV hardly shows any videos, because of the crap they call reality TV.
I am proud to say that I went from a fan of David Hubbard's to a very good friend. David is 48 now - married with a wonderful family. He and his brother Michael started a production company called Bright Idea Entertainment. And he still looks like he could be 16. LOL!
This was Mary Pickford's favorite show in her twilight years. She never missed an episode! God he was adorable and a veritable field of hormonal infatuation and lust!
Lance Kerwin is some kind of religious minister in southern california now. What a shame, I would have liked to see him continue acting, but drugs got a hold of him and somehow he got involved in ministry. Child stars really get messed up.
Not to sure about decency. As I recall, and I was only seven at the time, James at 15/16 has a teenager drinking / skulling beer. Like I could care less, but by todays standards would this not be frowned upon?
Um, I also grew up in the 1970s in the New York suburbs, and I can tell you that the
70s were a rotten time. Double-digit inflation, awful leadership (Nixon and Carter), oil crises, gas lines, and a general sense of malaise. All of this was happily ignored in "James", and that was one of the reasons it was such a watchable and enjoyable show
Ignoring the issues in "James" may have been part of it's success (a big part) but NOT teaching kids about what's going on is just as bad, and considerably contra-productive.
NO kid had a childhood as easy as James, OR the Brady Kids, but I guess reality needed to be put on the back burner for endless optimism and ratings.
Sure, I agree 100%, but people were looking for an escape during that period. Hence the immense popularity of "Happy Days"-- a look back to a time of perceived innocence.
I couldn't agree more with your take on Happy Days..according to my mom, they truly were better times, and sure they had their problems, as every day and age does, but in general, people got along so much better.
Today...you can't even disagree with anyone on ANYTHING...politics, religion, ect. Noone can talk anymore, just scream, yell, and villfy and degrade.
Are you kidding? McCarthy Hearings, The "A" Bomb, Polio, Korean War, lynchings against blacks, censorship, etc. dangerous highways prior to the construction of the US interstate system-- does any of that ring a bell?. And you say, "people got along so much better"? which people? Not blacks & whites.Sorry, the fifties were not such a wonderful time to live. You can't imagine what it was like with the threat of nuclear war drummed into your head.
That was America's challenge, and each decade has it's unique moral-political-philosophical roadblocks.
McCarthyism? RELAX......now that "change" is here, you can sit back and enjoy your little reverse form of the disease now that the Leftist media runs the show. AND, unlike your take on the 50's, you can sit back and watch the country turn to REAL shit now.
@Shawnster65: so I'm personally responsible for the economy going to sh*t because I voted for Obama? The machinery had been set in place, the country was already on an economic downward spiral way before Obama was elected. Thanks to people with your attitude, nothing gets accomplished in this country, they tend to create polarization with every single issue.
@Nikes62 Polarization? Oh wow, now the pot's calling the kettle black:
Does that include the polarization of the Left-Wing media who see everyone who disgarees with Obama doing so because of RACE and not politics? Way to drag everyone into your losing battle..
Nothing gets done? Oh sure. Does that include the Feds and their "Let US handle illegal immigrants" attitude? 20 years and guess what, "nothing's been done."
@Nikes62 I notice that you yourself didn't live through them and are going by what your college profs / the NY Times / Katie Couric / Daily Worker, etc., tell you to believe. While McCarthy's methods were indeed heavy-handed and reeked of grandstanding, that's sadly what was required at the time. I hope you're not one of those people who believe that the Rosenbergs were framed. Even the former KGB brass-- who'd hardly gain by lying about it-- have acknowledged their stone-cold guilt.
@reprobacious That's OK, you'll have to forgive Nike62. HE'S the victim.
Photo Voter ID's and airport security violate HIS right to privacy. Any request for respect and restraint at the graves of fallen soldiers violates HIS 1st Amendment rights.
Controlling illegals is a violation of human rights..gun owners are all secret members of some hideous plot to restore the South as the rulers of
@Shawnster65 well now you really made me feel like an a**hole, especially with your comments about "restraint at the gravesites of fallen soldiers"...That one hurt even though I'm not a part of that. I feel like I owe you an apology for pissing you off. You do have a point. Yes, I see that both sides can create polarization. Thanks for that.
@Nikes62 Look, no biggie. I wasn't out to make you feel bad. I simply wanted to remind you that disrespect is not the sole providence of the Right-Wing. Ignorance is a two-way street and both lanes are totally congested as of now.
When I said "remember the change you voted for" I simply meant that you, yourself, may someday disagree with Obama in the same capacity as many now see the GOP, and to remember that once you make your mark, and raise your voice, that's it.
@Nikes62 to continue...I never pegged you for a disrespecter or a hater of our Armed Forces. That was just an example of actions that ARE taking place in the name of Free Speech ( Code Pink and Westboro Baptists).
And it's also an example of how power W\O perception is spiritually useless and therefore of no true value.
And to plow ahead mindlessly to promote your own beliefs (in the name of and at the expense of others) is the ultimate hypocrisy. Not you BTW . Peace to you :-)
@reprobacious "I notice that you yourself didn't live through them and are going by what your college profs / the NY Times / Katie Couric / Daily Worker, etc., tell you to believe."
I was allowed to watch this until The Episode in which James loses his virginity. I was 15 myself at this time and old enough (I felt) to handle it but my parents were scandalized. Sadly, I had to bid adieu to James, my Crush of the Week...er, Minute...
I only have one memory about this show. James has the hots for a swimming teacher and then later has a fantasy of making out with her. Kind of a cool show.
I liked this theme song better than the one they had originally. Yeah, I'm 48 and I think this guy is a year or so older than me. I remember watching this show and thinking it was canceled too soon.
I wonder what that Swedish exchange student James met for his sixteenth birthday is doing now! Her name was Chris if I remember correctly. Man, I had a crush on that woman for awhile after that. My friends at school joked about that forever.
Don't remember much of this show maybe because it did not last long or have anything earth-shattering to remember. Anybody else watch it with fond memories, or any memories ?
I was young at the time, but I did watch it on Thrusday nights where The Office and 30 Rock is there now. It disappeared quick, I seem to remember. That show made me wonder
This show needs to be be available on DVD. Both seasons. It reminds me of high school, and I bought the England Dan and John Ford Coley album after I saw them on this show. "There's a warm wind blowin the stars around, and I'd really love to see you tonight". Ah, the 70's, gotta love it!!!
I loved Lance Kerwin. He actually made my wall, next to Scott Baio. I loved the show where he and his girlfriend "Did It" in a sleeping bag out doors. I think by that time it was "James at 16 or 17"
I thought that the show "jumped the shark" when they opened the show with this "hard-rock" version. The version from the first season was perfect for the show. They had to tamper with success.
I actually was a "James at 16" in 1978. This show was so far from reality It was unwatchable to me at the time. Would be funny to see again or show my kids
I loved this show. As I recall, after it changed from "James At 15" to "James At 16", there was a story line where James loses his virginity to an exchange student, and contracts VD. The local affiliate came on at air time to state that they would not be showing the episode. Then, the show was cancelled - PITY. But, thanks for posting this.
I always liked this version of the theme song better than the other one, however for 30 years I had no idea it was England Dan and John Ford Coley. Is there a full version of this to download somewhere??
This was the version of the theme song that I remembered from when the show aired, not that folkie hoedown tune. Nice England Dan/John Ford Coley theme!
I love the fact that here is a guy who plays the flute (!!!) and no one calls him derogatory names because of it. I love that! I wanted to play the flute when I was a kid because of James, but since I am gay - and I think my folks knew it, they did their best to talk me out of it. James was rad!
I remember the episode when James got laid by a Swedish exchange student. It caused some controversy at the time, but it was mild compared to TV today.
They should do a reunion show. They could call it "James at 45". The opening could show all the ages crossed off. James would be a world-renowned photographer who has been through drug rehab and is raising bratty teenagers of his own.
Wow! I wish I could see a whole episode! Back then I was a good friend of David Hubbard (now, David Raynr, Film Director) and a big fan of the show. Memories!
Kim Richards sure turned out to be a nice, upstanding citizen.

riwired 2 years ago 2
Hollywood is partly to blame---child stars have money, fame, some power, but NO adult survival skills.
Hollywood needs to work with the parents to prepare child stars for long term adult skills instead of seeing them as dollar signs.
And it should be mandatory and part of their continuing contract to get the help they need if they begin going down the wrong road.
A star, child or adult, is still a human being, and not just a paycheck.

I was 13 or 14 at the time and I totally agree with you-the 70's ruled.
The TV shows, UHF TV, late-night monster movies on Creature Features..AND the birth of the video game system!
Left wing media bias was a beesting
and not an epidemic, and liberals and conservatives actually RESPECTED
each other even if they disagreed (not like they are today.)
Today, God forbid if you disagree with the Left on ANYTHING (or with anyone on anything in general..)

I love the fact that here is a guy who plays the flute (!!!) and no one calls him derogatory names because of it. I love that! I wanted to play the flute when I was a kid because of James, but since I am gay - and I think my folks knew it, they did their best to talk me out of it. James was rad!

Janes is so cute, and I loved his throaty/scratchy voice.

I remember the episode when James got laid by a Swedish exchange student. It caused some controversy at the time, but it was mild compared to TV today.

I also wish this would come out on DVD. I totally crushed on James--and that was my "type" for many years after! He was adorable!

I have been looking for this for so long. I wanted to be James when I was a kid. This was a great show. Thank you for posting this!

They should do a reunion show. They could call it "James at 45". The opening could show all the ages crossed off. James would be a world-renowned photographer who has been through drug rehab and is raising bratty teenagers of his own.

Thanks for posting this. I forgot that Kim Richards was in this--remember her as cute little Prudence in Nanny and the Professor?

THANKS! Sly was my favorite. The theme song from England Dan and John Ford Coley is the best!

Wow! I wish I could see a whole episode! Back then I was a good friend of David Hubbard (now, David Raynr, Film Director) and a big fan of the show. Memories!
