That's the problem: that rave culture in America is almost synonymous with Ecstasy. Sure there are some people that go for the music, like me, but most don't. Because of that it's earned a bad wrap, which it deserves mostly, and people that actually want to go just to dance, feel the vibes, and music get shorthanded. Sure E is fun, but in the end just messes you up and deprives you of a real rave experience. Someone needs to start an E free rave scene

the rave scene is growing here in southern california but its mostly little kids that dont know shit about nothing and they just go for the drugs, theyre giving us a bad name over here..
hell yea, it was all good wen i started but now its like a highschool reunion everytime i go anywhere and wen i talk to them they dont know anythin about the music or wut its about,
the early 90s rave was incredible djs would feed of each others vibes and take crowds into frenzys !! frankie is right its all in clubs now its safe there and the music is a lil lack luster !! its definatley rare that it happens like that nowadays it was more of a culture back then..
There is till a pretty busy scene where I live in Switzerland, but the crowds are terrible, people dont know a party even when it hits them in the face these days...
I went to my first rave in 1991 I think, it was called Sputnik and it was in Newburgh NY. As soon as I got some money I bought two tech 1200s. Still going strong to this day although dance music got pretty shitty in the late '90s, surprisingly I feel like some of the new DJs out there are bringing the vibe back. Last good party spot was Lunatarium in D.U.M.B.O
This video was taken in 1999. But I would have said the same exact thing in 1994. And yet that would make me a hypocrite because there still is a scene. It just is a lot smaller then it was ten years ago. Of course any big festival is going to be mainstream. In Southern California when you pick up a flyer, if the top billing acts/DJ's are not showing millions of views on their Youtube videos, they won't be top billing, they will not be getting booked.
i used to attend to the original storm raves in sheepshead bay bklyn... I used to get there at 5-6am!!! shit used to last into the day... best times of my life.. whattap Frankie, Adam, Heather!!!?
5) Many of the people are all about P.L.U.R. but seems that they are only about is when on E. But ive met a few hardcore P.L.U.R. people like myself.
6) NYC rave scene is def growing, i has its years. But parties cost too much and most ravers are broke.
Analysis: Bring back free parties, and rave scene will thrive, you gotta take the financial hit for awhile. But when they begin thriving again all will be well.
i hear that, so many people got hardcore into the rave and then droped out forever becasue of the drugs, how could you give up the music and the liquid so easily? Liquid Dancing ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what i liked about raves was that you could just be your self, how many places can you go to wearing a cap , pumps or looking like a farmer or dressed as a alien? virtually non cos of dresscodes , they tell you how to dress how to dance what to drink and show you how to wipe your bum too,for me the rave scene was youtube for the times the music was mostly made by kids with samplers and they sampled there best tunes and movies in a style we could all enjoy it died years ago
sweeet memories those early parties. the planetary parties....upstate ny......frankie bones, onionz, db, wink, mr kleen.....sure do miss those funky days!
i just dont get anymore, 60's generation had the really cool era of psychedelic music, 70's generation had the cool classic rock & punk scene, 80's gen had the new wave and post punk scene, 90's had the rave and grunge scene, what does the gen in the 2000's get?crap rap and shitty overated emo rock bands for young confused teenagers?? wtf.
electronic music scenes have still grown and developed into 2000. as for the raving side of it, yes most of it is conformed and it isnt as unique and how it was, but it depends on the extent of how much the nights are commercialised. there are still plenty of VERY "ravey" nights in some clubs that are far from that commercial line, and many illegals that go on still with people who hold that original mentality.
in short, yes its nt the same generally, but its still der in certain places.
@KROMEXICAN I'm sure there were kids in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s that said the exact same thing you're saying.
KROMEXICAN from the 60s: I just dont get it anymore, 20s had jazz, the 40s had big band, the 50s had Elvis, and what do the 60s get? crap psychedelic music! wtf.
The scene is dead and it will never be like it use to be back in the early 90's,we can thank all the damn e-tards that O.D and brought way to much attention to the scene and the promoters that were just in it for the money fuck having to pay 6 bucks for WATER WTF is that about? parties were meant to have fun not money.. well you have to goto IBIZA now that's where it's at now and has been for a very long time,LOng Live Electro Breaks and Drum & Bass.
I miss the old scene SO MUCH!!! It used to be fun. I still love the music, I blast it at home.... but I quit going to parties because I got sick of seeing a bunch of young teenage girls in their underwear, all hopped up on drugs with their creepy dealers following them around, waiting to make a move on them. And the commercialization of it all...you can get into a rave via TicketMaster....what happeend to map-points & special flyers? That extra step always made a weekend a fun adventure....
I remember raving in New Orleans in the late 90's...those were the days...I used xtc, but it was so much more than that...the love, unity and freedom...Ive been clean for over 3 years now...and STILL blare my stereo to AK1200, DJ Icey...Houdi..yea baby! I would'nt give the experience I had in those years for anything, but I also wouldnt go back , Im grown up now! Peace
people very rarely understood in the states that raves had nothing to do with clubs, but yeah it changed once people took it just for a moneymaker and way to get drugs...sucks. i miss my culture the real culture.
maybe for the majority of american ravers.... but some of us really do live for the music. ive been going to raves for a few years now and i can honestly say that (in my scene at least) we are going back to the oldskool vibe. a rave was raided by police 3 years ago in my area which kind of drove off the dealers. now we are going back to the roots. are numbers are down at events but the amazing vibe is back! wanna go to a great rave, come to utah. i kno it sounds funny but im serious. PLUR!!!
i blame all the drug dealers from the ghettos and their little wannabe hardcore entourages that made raves up here in northern cali not as big as they were back then!i use to rave alot back in the dayz and it was never a problem until all these dumb gangstas and drug dealers hear about raves being a very easy way to make money so of couse they tell others and so on.then the law started getting involved and they thought that every raver is involved in dealing as well.that is my personal opinion!
Are you guys sure that the rave scene is dead? I don't know much about it but I read that in Europe it is still big, only they are now called "free parties" and "teknivals.." I think theres a Wikipedia page about it. Theres also a forum I checked out where people get together to talk about the parties. Most of them are done in abandoned buildings.
I don't know, there are places where the scene is very much alive and very much a gathering of unity and peace. Granted people aren't breaking into buildings but the ideals are still the same.
Where did raves go? Money, greed, politics, government, same shit that always ruins everything. Raves these days are so lame. They're an empty shell of what they used to be. Biggest thing missing from them today is the idea of PLUR. Peace, Love, Unity, Respect. You'll find none of that today. That's a big reason why raves today suck so badly. They're a total business now.
this is a trailer i put together a few years back in the midst of creating a full length documentary. Unfortunetly we did not get the financial backing to complete the doc.
I have been to hundreds of raves in my life. I was soon into the scene that I would go every chance I could. But they are right, the scene is dead, dominated by money hungry promoters and drug dealing gangs. I miss those days when the scene was all about unity, love, and peace! There still are underground raves that are still true to the game, but they are very hard to find!
what that guy said all about american youth and not growing up with electronic music vs europe, was on-point. sadly, the music scene gets infiltrated by gang members b/c they have the money(drugs) to throw parties like this.
If santa was real, would you sit on his lap whenever you wanted a gift or would you save up every penny, work like a slave and run up your credit to buy your own gifts?
What a find a shame is that everyone thinks it's for the drugs. It's not necessarly a part of what makes a rave a rave! Raves are a celebration of music of our generation and we should think of it as that. You don't need drugs to have a good time, just some awesome hardcore music and glowsticks! Take some insight into that...and maybe we can revive the scene. Btw I might go to Snuggle 2 in Pittsburgh PA! (my first rave!!) :D
It's a shame raves faded in America, techno/trance music rocked, in that underground scene. Know you have to go to some mainstream club, which takes out the mystifying feeling that you'll get from a rave. America bring raves back!!
To bad for the U.S., but luckily I live in liberal en non-conservative Europe where the house scene is unbelievable big. Big houseparties (you call it Raves) 50.000 man at on location.
Would like to see this doc. Have been discussing with U.S. and European friends why it is that EDM (electronic Dance music) is so small in the U.S. incomparison with Europe.
u wanna know why? because America has a big problem embracing things that arent made in America. Look at "football", they call it soccer, and made some other sport where only 1 guy actually 'kicks the ball'...
wth??
btw im from California and very much into electronic music, and house dance, not to say i dont like Hip Hop, Rock etc im very open to all sorts of stuff.
no they aint, why do scotland get the likes of q dance, masters of hardcore and soon industrial strength records???? cause if u ask any dj where the best raves are most will say scotland, they just love the crowd up here
the english AND the irish are best at it love!americans are shit at it..all the best raves these days happen in the Netherlands but the dutch crowd are so fucking lifeless, the Irish and English are fuckin bolistic!!!!!!!!!

Come to the Netherlands for good raves
In the early 90's it was a real underground thing but grow out to profesional and good organized raves
with still thousends of (new & old generation) party people at every rave (techno Hardcore hardstyle oldskool)
And keep the memories of the good old early days(i do) things never be the same
12 years later,i'm getting older but stil hooked on RAVE MUSIC !!!

The scene in New York is def not dead, small and struggling maybe but heres the plus's
1) Promoters are not out to make money nemore, raves are so small that promoters lose money now.
2) Dealers are mainly small time if that
3) Promoters hire usually only true rave style music dj's, none of that basshunter shit.
4) Local DJ's almost always spin the truest most hardcore underground shit they can find.
Hytek88 2 years ago
5) Many of the people are all about P.L.U.R. but seems that they are only about is when on E. But ive met a few hardcore P.L.U.R. people like myself.
6) NYC rave scene is def growing, i has its years. But parties cost too much and most ravers are broke.
Analysis: Bring back free parties, and rave scene will thrive, you gotta take the financial hit for awhile. But when they begin thriving again all will be well.
Screw 2 step clubbers, bring rave back.

what i liked about raves was that you could just be your self, how many places can you go to wearing a cap , pumps or looking like a farmer or dressed as a alien? virtually non cos of dresscodes , they tell you how to dress how to dance what to drink and show you how to wipe your bum too,for me the rave scene was youtube for the times the music was mostly made by kids with samplers and they sampled there best tunes and movies in a style we could all enjoy it died years ago

i just dont get anymore, 60's generation had the really cool era of psychedelic music, 70's generation had the cool classic rock & punk scene, 80's gen had the new wave and post punk scene, 90's had the rave and grunge scene, what does the gen in the 2000's get?crap rap and shitty overated emo rock bands for young confused teenagers?? wtf.
KROMEXICAN 3 years ago 52
dude i agree with you there. Kids today dont have a subculture they can call there own:(
xgxcxbx 3 years ago 6
electronic music scenes have still grown and developed into 2000. as for the raving side of it, yes most of it is conformed and it isnt as unique and how it was, but it depends on the extent of how much the nights are commercialised. there are still plenty of VERY "ravey" nights in some clubs that are far from that commercial line, and many illegals that go on still with people who hold that original mentality.
in short, yes its nt the same generally, but its still der in certain places.

The scene is dead and it will never be like it use to be back in the early 90's,we can thank all the damn e-tards that O.D and brought way to much attention to the scene and the promoters that were just in it for the money fuck having to pay 6 bucks for WATER WTF is that about? parties were meant to have fun not money.. well you have to goto IBIZA now that's where it's at now and has been for a very long time,LOng Live Electro Breaks and Drum & Bass.
kidkree1 3 years ago 2

So "very true" what DJ DB says about american ravers vs uk ravers!
baangel510 3 years ago 3
maybe for the majority of american ravers.... but some of us really do live for the music. ive been going to raves for a few years now and i can honestly say that (in my scene at least) we are going back to the oldskool vibe. a rave was raided by police 3 years ago in my area which kind of drove off the dealers. now we are going back to the roots. are numbers are down at events but the amazing vibe is back! wanna go to a great rave, come to utah. i kno it sounds funny but im serious. PLUR!!!
alec1234554321 3 years ago
i blame all the drug dealers from the ghettos and their little wannabe hardcore entourages that made raves up here in northern cali not as big as they were back then!i use to rave alot back in the dayz and it was never a problem until all these dumb gangstas and drug dealers hear about raves being a very easy way to make money so of couse they tell others and so on.then the law started getting involved and they thought that every raver is involved in dealing as well.that is my personal opinion!

Are you guys sure that the rave scene is dead? I don't know much about it but I read that in Europe it is still big, only they are now called "free parties" and "teknivals.." I think theres a Wikipedia page about it. Theres also a forum I checked out where people get together to talk about the parties. Most of them are done in abandoned buildings.

finish it. You will find finance a problem because of the association with d*!gs.

(my first rave!!) :D
djmikedee 3 years ago
It's a shame raves faded in America, techno/trance music rocked, in that underground scene. Know you have to go to some mainstream club, which takes out the mystifying feeling that you'll get from a rave. America bring raves back!!
eggsandwich8885 3 years ago
To bad for the U.S., but luckily I live in liberal en non-conservative Europe where the house scene is unbelievable big. Big houseparties (you call it Raves) 50.000 man at on location.
Would like to see this doc. Have been discussing with U.S. and European friends why it is that EDM (electronic Dance music) is so small in the U.S. incomparison with Europe.
markborst 4 years ago
u wanna know why? because America has a big problem embracing things that arent made in America. Look at "football", they call it soccer, and made some other sport where only 1 guy actually 'kicks the ball'...
wth??
btw im from California and very much into electronic music, and house dance, not to say i dont like Hip Hop, Rock etc im very open to all sorts of stuff.
