If you need a big truck, you need a big truck. However, most Americans buy a vehicle that's way bigger than they really need. And that shopper said he's going to pay an extra $2500 a year in gas, but he'll save $5000 off the price. That's only a 2 year payback, which is pretty bad.

But the bottom line is get what you truly need. The difference in total cost will easily pay for renting a big vehicle on those rare occasions when you need one.
