I can do without Steve Gadd's heavy left hand every time he plays a jazz tune. Gadd is a great pop/studio drummer, but is not a prototypical jazz drummer IMHO.
These guys not only play well and sound and look good - they're popular too, and there's just no way I can forgive that. But I think Steve Gadd is pretty good here @tmg1968 - doing his authentic 'jazz style' drumming. Very professional. What people don't always realize is what good value for money these session musicians can be. The next number that night, for example, was an old sea shanty done in the style of The Grateful Dead.
I love Steve Gadd, but man, is he ever pounding the shit out of the ride cymbal, snare, and bass drum. For my personal tastes...way too heavy handed and in the forefront for a jazz drummer. There are way better choices for jazz drummers than Gadd IMHO.
Fortunately I got to see Michael Brecker a couple of times (once with Gadd, Corea, and Gomez on the "Three Quartets" tour, when they all worked from charts). This video shows the reality: he never, ever wasted a solo. For my money, he was the heir apparent to Trane, a continuation of the line of great tenors. I read that his brother Randy, the trumpeter, said it was always a major drag following Michael in the solo order. This video shows why. Thanks so much for posting. He is greatly missed.
@61moonshine I was wondering when someone would say that! I can only think of a handful of people who could follow Michael Brecker in a solo lineup. Joe Farrell, Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, and Ernie Watts come to mind. Michael is still probably my favorite and I really miss his playing like everyone else.
ohh......are you a symphony trumpet player?......think on mahler brass fff sections.....full sound, or you are a wrong career musician? (you play a flute sound instead of trumpet)
Michael Brecker is absolutely wonderful, and I enjoyed this because although there was improvisation, at least occasionaly I could hear the melody. . . jenny6664
This is the truest point! As Arkady states: "The best we can hope for is to learn from each other as musicians." If most had this attitude the world would be a better place!
But all that does NOT take away from any other musician! We are all on the same Train (Trane), Returning To Forever (pun intended)... The best we can hope for is to learn from each other as musicians.
In addition to being a huge of fan of Michael, I got to know him personally during his last 1.5 years on Earth, as part of his Big Fight for LIFE! His loss still hurts!
Michael was one of the most loving, humble people I've ever seen in person or TV:)! To *me* he is no less monumental than Trane, Bird and such! He not only played, but composed! Add the tech aspect of it - EWI etc. -- it's pretty amazing!
When I see YT Comments where some compare Michael to others, it reminds me of the American Idol mentality, which I'd like to see as far away from music, or at least Jazz part of a spectrum...
When I see some putting Michael down, pinning him against other musicians, I wish I could press a button, and have the authors of those comments instantly appear on YouTube, playing their instruments, and showing us exactly how it should be done:)
@arkadymusic@arkadymusic A kid once came up to Phil Woods, and reportedly said "All you do is play just like Charlie Parker!" According to the story, Phil then took his alto, offered it to the kid, and said "Here! Lets see YOU play just like Charlie Parker!" :-)

I have not been playing anything, but I know a battle of stupid men's egos here. Just shut up and listen. And don't you make me have to come over there! Yo Mama
Well, lets not exagerate here..without Bird and Trane there would have been no Brecker who was mainly stylistic in his funk and fusion playing,at which he was the best ever.
you need to actually pay attention to who brecker's biggest saxophone-based influences actually were. Sure charlie parker was, any improviser-whether they play piano, guitar, saxophone, whatever owes a lot to charlie parker, but it would be more appropriate for you state that brecker was influenced by coltrane, rollins, joe henderson, etc etc.... (and not just sax players). Maybe make a more informed statement next time... And Brecker's own harmonic innovations - no, bird not invent that "shit".
If not Bird, (though it probably was) than certainly Coltrane, Stitt, Henderson, Miles, Duke, Hancock, Woody Shaw, Hubbard, and many more who came before Brecker. Just a fact.
jazzman303, do you think ornette coleman wasn't intense? What about Charles Lloyd, Pharoah, Dolphy, Rollins or Kirk? The list goes on-and-on, don't be so narrow-minded! Raittis is correct!
It's Stupid to just put Trane in Bird in that category. What about Joe Henderson and Dex. and Wayne and Well I could go all day with this. I Just solidly beleive that are is no one who has been able to play with the intensity and sort of spirituality that Trane played with.
I have always like the Slower versions of this song "Invitation"
RIP micheal, Your my favorite saxophonist. HEY EVERYONE, I found this amazing pianist. GO to "long vent: improv on piano", on day she may be up to Micheal's level... THAT GOOD.
You obviously don't know jazz if you claim that Brecker is the most talented saxophonist of the 20th century. He is undoubtedly one of the strongest sax players in the 20th century but claiming that he has surpassed Trane and Bird is just silly. Do some more analysis of what Trane and Bird did and you may realize that claiming that he is the most talented sax palyer in the 20th century is just plain foolish.
The molecules in thast room went out of order while he played....Brecker had such intense, compelling, solos that had a statement everytime! Incredible musician
that was great. Mike was smokin and Steve was swinging the shit out of that! Of course on Jaco's B-Day concert album, Brecker and Bob Mintzer do the most incredible ridiculous version of that. Mike is one of my fav. tenor players, this is a very sad loss to take. We should be grateful the music will always be there.
