I make soups and stocks on my wood stove all the time. Cook a chicken. Throw the carcass in some cold water and put the pot on the stove, fish out the bones, reserve any meat scraps, toss in some onions, carrots and beans (or potatoes or cabbage or whatever I have that needs eating up), and some herbs (doesn't rosemary grow in TX?)
You've got yourself a fine soup that way and it's cheap as hell.
man i cook that all the time and if i got some leftover meat it go's in to..its all about what u got not what u want................... been there god bless
