The reason for the moons composition is due to how it formed. A Mars sized planet crashed into early Earth in the very beginning during or shortly after the formation of the solar system. The left over debris orbiting earth collected together to become the moon. The moon did have volcanoes for awhile and that is what caused the dark gray plains that appear in some areas.
