After I had finally wrapped my mind around the chords, I still had extremely sloppy technique. I couldn't figure out quite how to make it sound like John Mayer. This technique video was PERFECT because it focused in on exactly what I was lacking. Now I can play it. Of course, not quite on par with John, but enough to make fans bob their heads and smile with approval. Thanks for making this! :)
@DeathMagnetic90 yeah i know what your saying. i just watched it all the way through for the first time since i posted it last year. and to be frank i felt bad about the poor job i did explaining this. i am planning on redoing this lesson with greater detail, the actual chords, and zoomed out. the reason its zoomed in so much is because it was more of a lesson on the right hand technique. so like i said, i will redo this lesson and upload other techniques soon...
@pieterdries dude dont use john mayers "picking technique" just because someone is famous n they write a song doesnt mean the way they pick is the best way to pick, john mayer isnt the best guitar player n the reason he picks like this is because his lack of classical skills, the "most superior technique" way to pick this is to just rake pick it, this isnt trying to bash john mayer in anyway, but dont be so obsessed with using his technique because its an inferior technique to begin with
@chevchank i understand what you're saying. i can both rake pick it and use john mayers technique. the reason why i am using his technique in this video is because the viewers want to know how john does it. plus it sounds different between the two techniques. and to people who want that percussive sound, want to learn it mayers way. and from my experience john mayers technique is more difficult, more complex and sounds better than rake picking it. but that is just my opinion.
@AndrewDavisMusic hey i get what ur saying, n dont think im trying to argue or say ur not right in what ur getting at, but the reason johns technique is more difficult is because its an "inferior" technique adopted by him maybe due to lack of classical training or something along those lines, there is absolutely no reason to only use ur thumb n pointer finger for this, it can still be picked with a finger for each string with a tap inbetween notes, n using thumb for slapping
Mate, light microscopy is an inferior, less detailed technique than electron microscopy. However, in light microscopy you don't have to kill the sample in order to visualise it (as in EM). Now don't get caught up in the detail, but I'm using this analogy to show you that 'inferior techniques' may still be more appropriate in the right situation. Although it's completely subjective, one might even say this 'inferior technique' sounds better in the context of this song than raking. x
Just something I was wondering when starting this song: does it matter if you play it wih more than 2 fingers for its sound? I know this is supposed to be a 'dance' between thumb and index finger, but it would make it a bit easier for me. By the way, most helpfull tutorial out there for this song, thanks!
@Ccbroo no it doesn't matter. thats how i first learned to play it. but the two finger way is the way john plays it. which way is easier and more comfortable for you would be the better way. and thanks!

You're playing this song GREAT, but I'd say this instruction could have been a little bit better if you zoomed out while playing.
