kao lek na nase napacene duse!ovo je film koji zasluzuje samo najlepse kritike.lungin kroz mamonova pokazuje kako izgledaju nasi sveti oci tj kako je izgledao sam isus hrist.
It is a moving story I liked it. But honestly I did not get why he had double personality, and was sort of rebelling among the others I might even say bothering them. And those advices like goto Paris your husband is there? I just did not get it.
@Lakkauser That was not "advice". God told him to tell her that, didn't you watch the movie? He was a healer, prophet if you like. He could see the future. Comments like yours really confuse me.
When it comes to "annoying" people, he just tried to make them into better people, in which he was successful at the end. With both Job and his supervisor (can't remember his name) .
@Globox822 Oh well, I was confused. I watched the movie and honestly as I said I did not get it. this guy shot the capitan then he became a monk? I am not sure he really was, I guess by definition one becomes monk because of believing and not because of feeling guilty (but I might be wrong too).
This talk with the woman about the husband in Paris, he was pretending talking to someone in the other room, what was the sense of that? (he was making 2 voices)
@Lakkauser He didn't wanted to take credit for helping people. That is why he pretended that he was talking to someone in the other room. In reality he was not pretending, you can say that the other voice was voice of God or Jesus. Some higher power that was speaking through him.
In some other cases, like when helping to that boy or woman at the end, he had to be present, but you can notice that he was very humble, again not taking any credit.
@Lakkauser when forced to shoot the guy.I see that as a path that God chose for him to save him self.Imagine if he stayed on that ship?He would remain empty coward for the rest of his life. But God had other plans, and "coincidence" that he was saved by priest and ended up in church again, a path that God chose for him.Since if you r religious you know that we are all born sinners and we have to save ourselves. In the end God does so that he & guy he think for 40 yr that he killed meet,
@Lakkauser Whoever is forgiven much, loves much. He recognizes that through the forgiveness of his guilt he owes a debt to the redeemer so he becomes a monk and serves Christ with signs following, in this case healing. Guilt led him to Christ, forgiveness led him to extreme service. It's not that he did or did not kill the man, the potential was there and it was an act of kindness & grace that God allowed him to see that he hadn't actually killed helping him to depart in peace.
Very good film, very interesting look into life at a Russian Orthodox Monastery and one man's spiritual agony. Also interesting how it portrays his spiritual gifts as well. As if one has given rise to the other.
I just watched this film for the second time, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I have one question though, perhaps someone can answer it. I admire Anatoly's awareness of his own sins, his humility in their light, and his desire for holiness. I also recognize that the weight of murder he bears is beyond my own experience. However, even at the end of his life, when this weight has been lifted, why does he approach his Father in fear? Where are the joy and peace that accompany salvation? Thanks.
@BorislavX Asking God for mercy and forgiveness is like asking the sun for light and heat; these belong to the incorruptible nature of divinity, and though clouds of ignorance may temporarily cast shadows of guilt over the souls of men, the sun does not go black, nor does the Lord condemn.
@Ihtiandr13 fear of God is not the same as we say, "i'm afraid of something that might hurt me, a criminal, a wild animal, a disease, etc". it's when you have a deep respect and recognize your sinful nature (that only He can change), but also as if you are afraid to hurt someone you love. when you love God you are afraid to do something that might upset Him.
I think that if one considers himself fully saved before his death, it's quite a danger out there - because, as prayers say, evil tries to get us even in the moment of our death. Therefore, this man knew that nothing's truly over until he actually meets his Savior on the other side... As for the fear of God, well, I believe this relationship with God is never ending... Not fearing Him could mean falling into sinfulness again...
@futloose because the better people are - the easier it is for them to see their other sins. even when Mary, the mother of Jesus was dying, she was afraid of her sins that human nature brings. and she was the mother of God! the more you know about your own self, the more you understand that you can never be free of sin. We dont know whether we are saved or not till the Last Judgement. Joy about yourself and being proud of yourself or just content is the 1st sign that you are on the wrong road.
@futloose Because we are never truly clean until we are to become one with God in the afterlife. The moment you tell yourself "ok I am saved, i'm fine" you lose everything. Arrogance and complacency enters.
@futloose "It was said of Abba Sisoes that when he was at the point of death, while the Fathers were sitting beside him, his face shone like the sun....He said (to them), 'Look, the angels are coming to fetch me, and I am begging them to let me do a little penance.’ The old men said to him, ‘You have no need to do penance, Father.’ But the old man said to him, ‘Truly, I do not think I have even made a beginning yet.’ "
@futloose Joy and peace are in the life to come and are beyond our purview. The paradigm of Jesus' perfect, complete humility and total surrender behooves us to be perpetually aware of our fallen state in the here and now, till our last breath.
@futloose Because he lacks faith in God. He's locked into a tradition which honors man's sin more than God's mercy. Divine grace comes through, even despite these imperfections in the faith, but it could do so much more if we did not hinder it. The obsession with sin is an obsession with self. Pride, not humility, refuses to receive the forgiveness of God. "Like a handful of dust thrown into the sea are the sins of all mankind compared with the mercy and providence of God" ~ St. Isaac the Syrian
@futloose My reading is that that's what separates the real saints from just the good. The good have a drop or two of salvation and gnosis and are delighted with it, but the great drink oceans of it and thirst for more.
@futloose Perhaps the creators of the film was to tight on the budget when they realized that the 'truth supposed to make you free...;-) or... may be this is the 'Orthodox way' .
Thank you for posting this film, especialy with English subtitles. I hope it will help people in the world to get a better idea of what Orthodox Christianity is all about.
This film is the most accurate picture of Orthodox monasticism that I know of. Sadly, it wouldn't (or couldn't) be made in "free" America...too "politically incorrect"...especially on abortion

@Lakkauser The woman didn't recognized him as the holy man(same as the pregnant girl and others).
He talks to ppl on the level they can understand! Tell them I am the One and they can go into coma LOL...or 'crucify' him.
Good film.

@Lakkauser It is widely misunderstood that guilt is a sort of virtue or synonym of repentance. Which is not and is a sin itself!
Its remote island he just 'hid himself there from the law' as hi sad. At least that was his reasons in the beginning...
Gotta watch more them ones to grasp all details.

It is through the realization of our sinfulness, fallen state and the constant fear of God that we are saved.
