@huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 That's just your 'liberal white guilt' acting up. Just watch a Tyler Perry marathon on BET and make a small donation to the NAACP and that annoying little feeling should go away.
They cut out the part where his partner here breaks out of prison and crawls through a river of Listerine and came out smelling like shit on the other side. or somethin like that.
Ever since I was a little boy, people have enjoyed the sound of my voice. And I figured you either get busy talkin or you get busy dyin'. The work is really quite easy. Why even right now I'm just sitting in a chair, sipping some tea and reading from a script. The wall is covered in something that resembles egg crates except they're soft and spongy, like a twinkie...like a twinkie.
"I wish I could tell you that Listerine fought the good fight, and the plaque let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but hygiene is no fairy-tale world."
There's so much wrong with this commercial: The strange trombone-sounding noise held out for about ten seconds at the beginning, Morgan Freeman's partner appearing to be under the influence of narcotics, the product priding itself on how bad it tastes, and the entire concept behind two electricians talking about mouthwash while working on an electrical pole. Due to these and many other factors, I consider this to be the most effective commercial ever made.
@yesistasty That "trombone sound" at the beginning sounds like a 60 cycle hum from an overmodulated video signal, a common problem in early broadcasting.
@yesistasty But.... Morgan Freeman is the greatest God since George Burns so that MUST count for something? Besides, I've talked about stranger things while on an electric pole. Fishing with cattle prods. Nuff said.
now, what product ad uses a similar campaign today?..... yes, thats right. Buckley's. u would think there might be some copyright infringement there. and here i thought Buckley's was the first to downtalk their product as a selling point
Judd Hirsch also appeared in one of these Listerine ads as a "motor-mouth" disc jockey; and, like Morgan Freeman, he was "paying the bills" acting in commercials before establishing himself as a "mainstream actor". Yes, the announcer at the end is veteran radio/TV voice-over Peter Thomas (his most recent credit was an ESPN promo) .
Years ago on Leno, Morgan was a guest and they showed him this commercial ( albeit a grainy , black and white kinoscope version)...he had forgotten he had done this spot. At first he denied it but then relented.
at least its honest. im alot more likly to buy stuff if the fellas selling it are honest. (looks at game developers and there inability to not talk a bunch of lies)
this might of been before it had a minty taste. it would be the original (that u can still get today) its a few pennies cheaper. it tastes like cod liver oil
Wow. I thought this was a spoof at first, but apparently it's for real. Unbelievable.
I remember some commercials from the 80s that would say things like, "This product may cost more than other brands, but it's worth it!" but I never saw anything this blatantly honest about a product's bad points.
Obviously because its a hygene product, and it subliminally implies that black people should use it. Whites often stereotype and cast prejudice towards blacks as unclean subhumans to serve as a racial slur. Why dont you ever see/saw a black person in something classy like a Mercedes commercial for example? In fact, how come 90% of the time you see white people in commercials. Lets not kid ourselves shall we.
Not really. This was the 1970s so this was actually getting _more_ black folks on TV, and it has them wanting the same products anyone else would. Even linemen care about their breath, etc.... could have been two white dudes or a white dude and a black dude too. 1973... very good year! :)
There's some reversed psychology fer ya! What do they do now to advertise orange listerine? "Tastes great so you have to take our word for it that it's working"?
Don't you just love how black folks were portrayed on TV and in the movies in the 70's? I was half expecting them to throw out a "Jive turkey" or "Jack" in their dialog.
They should have added one of these at the end:"Say,man, could I try some your Listerine?" Nah,my brotha, you got ta get ya own."
Whatchu talkin' bout you Jive Turkey Sucka?? sorry they arent being portrayed in any politically incorrect manner here. here they are just acting within the times. it sounds a little silly but this is to appeal to the modern age. look at commercials now and youll see.
XDDDD Man, this is sooo true.. I use listerine just cause it makes my mouth feel like it's melting, feels like it's actually DOING SOMTHING except tasting good. Great commercial!
wow! Such honesty. I tried the original when i wasa kid and it made me want to puke. Didnt try it again unitl they started putting mint in. But it still dries out your mouth.
Come to recently find out that alcohol your tasting is an inactive ingredent. So that nasty taste is not what's making it work. I use it though just because it feels like it's making it work. lol
Actually alcohol by it's nature is very destructive to mouth bacteria because alcohol destroys anything with a cell wall. The alcohol and the other ingredients work together to give your mouth that "just gargled with witch hazel" feeling.
