RWD may be the winner in countries with dry roads all year round, but throw in some rain or ice and give me AWD. My AWD GT and RS Subarus I could drive hard regardless of the weather. My current BMW 330 and MB E420 are a pain in the arse when the road is wet, especially the MB when the engine torque is cut back to the point where other conventional cars are passing you by when the lights turn green and it is wet. Audi were too bland in their styling to consider, but from the B7 series on, wow.
AWD doesn't have a place in a sports car? Has anyone at Car and Driver even heard of Subaru Impreza WRX Sti? And the S4 is even more of a sports car than that. *shakes head*
I think this sedan makes a good practical dream car goal. It starts below 50k, and you can still get some of audi's greatest performance and sport tinted luxury. It does most everything well,a nd it's relatively within one's grasp....can't beat that.
APR put the s4 on their dyno and found it makes 330hp and 336 torques AT THE WHEELS, which means the engine is actually making close to 400hp! Too bad other brands won't follow this and advertise their wheel hp instead of engine. Like infiniti posts the g37 @ 330 hp but its putting less than 300 to the road.
@1000guitarplaya Really, so about 300Kw at the engine, great. With Kw/L about the same as Subaru's turbo engines, so even with 300Kw it should be fairly unstressed. The reduction in weight over the front axle should sharpen up the handling as well. Sounds like a winner.
Audi is the only company that understands how to make a performance AWD system. BMW doesn't use it in the M3 because their AWD system is lousy, and they want to keep cost and weight down. If you look at some of the best super exotic sportcars, they have mid-engine and AWD, this combination is key. By being able to shift 100% power to any wheel and have as much of a 50-50 weight balance as possible, this creates the best handling and puts the power on the pavement most efficiently. New SCHOOL
@nithPS2 I have a 2008 cadillac CTS and the last thing i want is a 580 hp corvette engine in that giant piece of plastic.... i can't wait till the lease is up, hugge mistake
@DONNYBOYY28 Although the AWD is nice, the reason id doesn't have a place in performance is because of the massive loss of traction you get. Yes... In a strait line, you will do alot better off the line. Although you lose more power due to having to supply power to the front & rear vice only the rear.
However, the big difference comes when pushing it in the corners. AWD causes serious understeer while trying to apply more power.
I learned this first hand when I switched from Subaru to BMW

i want the 40v v8 back, not some shitty ass v6, supercharged or not
whatthehallbetch 2 years ago
hahaha now your making up engines that audi never used
DONNYBOYY28 2 years ago
no im not. the s4 used a DOHC 5 valve per cylinder 4.2 liter v8 in the s4 up until now
whatthehallbetch 2 years ago
its funny cause when i went to check i found websites that said it was a 4 valve and sites that said it was a 5 valve
DONNYBOYY28 2 years ago
i think that the rs4 was 4 valve but the s4 and the other 4.2's are 5. i know that the a6 and a8's had the 5 valve 4.2
whatthehallbetch 2 years ago
Hope that the same fate of ditching the V8 doesn't happen to the RS-6. The sound of the 4.2 in the S4 was really something though.
datkoolbrutha 2 years ago
yeah! although, the RS-6 has a twin turbo V10
whatthehallbetch 2 years ago
rs6 is a twin turbo v10 :)
Rubberbandman13 2 years ago
Yeah, but for how long? I hate this downsizing crap. Good cars are starting to be lost because of the economy!
datkoolbrutha 2 years ago
@whatthehallbetch Heel yeah! But you know how it is. It's about saving fuel and stuff! I Audi even stopped production of the RS-4.
datkoolbrutha 2 years ago
audi s4 FTW brought back the forced induction v6, too bad its not twin turbocharged like the b5, still awesome though
monkeyman8644 2 years ago
who cares it makes 80hp more then the old b5 twin turbo...with a little tuning who knows how much this combo could make
