Yeah great advice. Choose an amp that inspires you! Go down to the store and play, some will inhibit you and others will make you more creative.
BTW amazing playing, love your sound. Been viewing so many vids and just keep coming across guys doing that whole pointless blues scale masturbation. Nice to see someone with inspired licks.
Wonder how this kind of recording sounds compared to micing the amp ? I mean, does it sound similiar to what you are actually hearing ? I mean there's no speaker work involved and the sound is taken directly from somewhere inside the amp, right ?:)
For those of you with humbuckers, particularly in the neck position, dont forget to try the low input of this amp. The high input at first is more gratifying cause its so loud and bold, but you may find in neck postion, the low e string can be overbearingly bassy on clean channel. The low input is great! The volume knob isnt so touchy, the EQ seems more balanced. Thats my experience anyway with a Duncan JB in the bridge and 59 in the neck.
Dave, great review. I actually bought this amp around a month ago, it is totally sweet for clean tones, it gets those twing reverb sparkly tones & them jangle spanky tones like the vibrolux which is the amp a friend owns, my only problem is the more drive channel, but I guess I did not buy it for that channel anyway, the drive is ok 4 soft rock but beyond that its not good. I am thinking of getting a good boss pedal to get a good drive sound out of the clean channel, as that is a better option.
@TheTangentUK The overdrive channel is deffo better than the earlier models though, its not on the same level as a bassman but its passable. My friend has the original bassman 100 stack, and it is freaking awesome. Do U use any pedals on the clean channel dave to get a good overdrive tone, if so do U have any vids to listen to cheers.
I completely agree with you. I have mine set to a clean tone and use pedals for more gain. I've been using the Suhr Riot for heavy tones, and the Boss DS1 and Boss Super Overdrive for mid range distortions...
hey David, how would you compare this amp to the marshall MA50c? which do you think would be better, I play heavy rock, rock, blues and jazz. Which would you say would be better for an all round practice/small gigs sound?
Great review! The thing I like about it the most is your willingness to explain how you approach your effects when looking for "that tone". Everyone has their own personal approach, and every time I get to hear/see what others do, I learn from it! I always wondered if someone "flatlined" their amp clean and used the distortion to eq the tone...now I know! And that also is a sign (to me, at least) of a good amp...that it sounds good with everything at 12 o'clock.
Excellent! Any chance you could explain how to record with a DI box? I have a Mesa Mark V and a mac. Is it possible to do the same without a mic? Thanks
It's amazing how many different sounds you can get with your setup! If you could, I'd like to see some more videos of you just jamming out to a track or something. I really like listening to those. Your videos are awesome as always!
i am officialy addicted to your videos man, i can´t help looking at your chanel waiting for something new, please, im suffering abstinence syndrome right now.
Good review!I also prefer a direct box instead of a mic, but I personally don't use amps. I use a powered mixer with a DI and my pedals(it's more uncoloured than an amp). And to record sometimes I use some amp simulation software, but not usually, I've found m tone/:D
You realy were quick making the review!!! I hope you had some nice vacations too!!!It's nice to breathe some fresh air and a little peace once in a while :) Im still between the twin reverb and this one but i hope this helps a little to make my choice. Btw what about the amp's speaker(s)?? Is it 1x10', 2x12'? I usualy go for 2x12s for jamming and 1x10' for home but i never had a tubes amp so id like to know your opinion, maybe 2x12 is way too much?
My approach is this. Software is the future. I own and have owned a Marshall JCM 800, 1997 Bogner Ecstacy 101b, and a VHT Ultra Lead. Then Line 6 came along, then Amplitube, Overloud, Revalver etc.... My next experiment is the Fractal Axe FX. But I can say this. If your looking for jamming variablitiy and close to perfect recording tones, open your mind to software. Even live, it's making dynamic strides.
I've been using softwares for years, this is the first amp I've bought in years only for goge. But as far as recording home, it's all software based pretty much. :-)
@Wallimann Totally, and let me clarify that this wasn't a critique. There are plenty of traditional amp manufacturers I keep my eye on. I know from watchin this channel that you're very open minded to technology. I'm a huge proponent of both for balancing reasons. That was just my forecasting observance. I just can't wait to carry my rig in a box once versatility and computer transport makes it a reality and we will see it in our lifetime.
@Wallimann The problem i find with software is you often have far too many functions to use and too little time to try them so it seems a little overwhelming. Maybe you could make a video on that if you have the time, it would be appreciated :). It would be nice to open our minds a little about software, recording and sound modulation. I mean, things like the palmer junction you told us about, great piece of gear that is...Thanks man, you realy make a great job with these vids!!!
Thanks David. I've been waiting for this video. I'll have to watch it a few more times. In regards to the buzz, I am a firm believer in the Boss Noise Suppressor. I put it at the end of my rig before my Fender Blues Jr. Works well. Worth the money if it fixes the buzz problem. I do love the Deluxe.
The Deluxe always was a great amp. After almost 20 years of using it, my resumee i short would be: Pros: -sweet clean and overdrive sounds -gets really (really) loud if you crank it -built in speaker suits the amp very good -reliable and road proof Cons: -doesnt stay clean too much when you play loud -likes to crate feedbacks (the annoing high ones) when playing loud with a distiortion pedal -buzz/noise in OD channel when not playing
@Account3of7 Man, I noticed that buzz too.. I doubt a noise suppressor would fix that because it's from the amp and not the effects, right? Any solutions to that problem?
Noise is from the amp for sure. Sometimes i use my ancient Rocktron Intellifex. Its built in HUSH Noise compression works good, but only on low-normal volume. I guess you would have to interfere between amp and the speaker to really solve this.
But hey, it's a tube amp. They just make noises :'(
haha i keep forgetting how good you actually are. every time i watch your videos the riffs just keep getting tastier. i wish i never sold my Deville, that amp had the best clean tone hands down.
Question- what kind of compressor do you use? a lot of people have been telling me the keeley is really good.
@Wallimann It suffers from 'Cheap Distortion Fizz Syndrome' imo.
I think you could coax a much better dirty rhythm tone from the Riot than you could the Dist, then kick in the Super OD in front of the riot for a lead tone. Just a suggestion. May or may not work for you but the GENERAL rule of thumb for gain pedals is to go from lowest to highest gain (with the exception of fuzz, but that is an other story).
So I go clean boost > light overdrive > heavier overdrive
just a little tip, try running the SD-1 before all the other dirt boxes. Considering its a overdrive pedal and the rest are (for the most part) distortion pedals, the OD will want something to drive.
The Suhr Riot is slowly creeping it's way into my dreams! :D
I'm really liking your rig, nicely thought through! It's also great to see that you're sounding good with the DS-1 and the Super Overdrive too, a lot of people don't give them enough time because their fairly cheap, but with the right tweaking and the right amp, as you have proven, they can sound great. :)
Yeah great advice. Choose an amp that inspires you! Go down to the store and play, some will inhibit you and others will make you more creative.

frankenbat 8 months ago
@frankenbat I usually boost the mids a bit. I don't really have a consistent way of doing it though...
Wallimann 8 months ago
@Wallimann i flatline everything, and i only play through the neck pickup. but i use rounded tip picks, so boosting anything messes up the sound.

Some nice tones man, the Flashback sounds great!
The only tone I wasn't keen on was the boss distortion. The super overdrive was nice though.
Try running the SO in front of the Riot if you haven't. That is a more 'atypical' way of doing things. Just see which you prefer that.
That said the Riot and SO stack tone was nice!
Welcome back!
Adji87 8 months ago
@Adji87 I agree, out of all the pedals the Super Distortion is my least favorite.
I'll give your suggestion a try, thanks! :-)
Wallimann 8 months ago
@Wallimann It suffers from 'Cheap Distortion Fizz Syndrome' imo.
I think you could coax a much better dirty rhythm tone from the Riot than you could the Dist, then kick in the Super OD in front of the riot for a lead tone. Just a suggestion. May or may not work for you but the GENERAL rule of thumb for gain pedals is to go from lowest to highest gain (with the exception of fuzz, but that is an other story).
So I go clean boost > light overdrive > heavier overdrive
Great sounds though.

just a little tip, try running the SD-1 before all the other dirt boxes. Considering its a overdrive pedal and the rest are (for the most part) distortion pedals, the OD will want something to drive.
