  • Very, very beautiful with Lea Salonga. I tried to play it in violin, the song is really beutiful. If someone would listen, enjoy it, acessing laamoura in You Tube..

  • madonna is better because she is the original singer however Lea did a good job as well! :)

  • @immatruthteller Um. You know Madonna was actually... not the original singer, right? In fact, Elaine Paige originated the role (and the songs) in the London theatre, and then Patti Lupone played her on Broadway? And then at least a dozen other actresses played her in tours and off-Broadway productions before it became a movie? So, if anything, Madonna was the -last- singer of this song as the actual character Eva Peron.

  • @briandjones89 Um. You know Madonna was actually... the original singer, right?

  • @briandjones89 Madonna was the original singer of "You must love me", as this song was written specifically for the film, not from the musical. Or else how could it win the Academy Award for Best Original Song?

  • SANA MATAWAG SI MS LEA SALONGA SA IGLESIA NI CRISTO BROTHER GERARD SALONGA

  • SANA MATAWAG SI MS LEA SALONGA SA IGLESIA NI CRISTO

  • BEAUTIFULL SONG

  • amazing and beautiful singer, i keep replaying this.

  • The voice is so enchanting...I feel like i was floating in the air.

  • Super beautiful. The music, the voice, the interpretation. I have tried to perform it in the violin, if you want to see it's a pleasure

  • @janetcalicagan lea didnt have the looks for the part. simple as that and Madonna did a good job on it.

  • @janetcalicagan have you ever seen evita´s face???

    mmm not filipine!!

anyway i also think lea is the best, but what can we do right?

  • Perfection !!! This is a standard all must follow to sing this song in the future. Precise, clear, everything , Wow. Truly, Lea Salonga, you one of the best in this field.

  • Madonna's is more poetic and heartfelt

  • @micamccarthy5 no way !

  • She's just.......Wonderful.

  • Lea definitely has a wonderful voice. Every note is perfectly hit. But, this song is sung by a dying lady in the Movie. Or say, this piece of music is trying to show the confession and emotion of Evita who was close to die. "Why are you at my side...You must love me...." always brings my tear up.

Lea's version just sounds too...healthy....too strong...

But, anyway, she sings very well.

  • @gedot29 You are right Lea's voice is wonderful, but it didn't evoke emotion for me like Madonna's version. Perhaps because Madonna's mother died of cancer she connected more, but what ever reason Madonna's version was powerful.

  • lea's voice = pure perfection

  • you MUST LOVE ME !! too..

  • Lea Salonga has the voice of an angel. Madonna's EVITA is nothing compared to Lea. Lea is WAY better than Madonna... and prettier.

  • To everyone who said Madonna did it better, let me just point out that this is live. And absolutely FLAWLESS.

    Just sayin'...

  • @GlindaTheGood42 Madonna can't sing !!!!

  • @GlindaTheGood42 I think what people are saying is that Madonna interpolated acting/dying into the song as opposed to simply singing it as Lea is doing. Lea does a marvelous job. She is obviously more vocally skilled than Madonna, but vocal skills aren't the preferred idea here, regarding the polarization.

  • lea's voice is as clear as crystal, very nice.

  • and there will only ever be one Lea Salonga

  • good voice

  • I think this is the absolute best rendition of this song I have heard to date. She has such a sweet and perfect voice. It makes me think of Eva Peron, her illness...I guess I am trying to say that when I listen to this, I BELIEVE her :~)

  • Her voice so touching T.T

  • No one singer had ever sung this song as emotionally and vocally mastered as Lea...

    Bravo

  • "There will only ever be one Madonna."- Justin Timberlake

  • Comment removed

  • these lyrics hold so much emotion, whomever sings them, may it be Madonna or Lea Salonga, its just so beautiful <3 ~

  • I really like this version. I also really like Madonna's version. They just have different tones, honestly that's not a bad thing! Just different interperetations I guess. So why pick sides? Who really cares? They're both really good!

  • I really loved it..

  • amazing voice..

  • wonderful

  • Oh,nice voice!

    Thank you!

  • Excellent video and very good performance! It very beautiful music! Very well made song, and very nice voice!! Thank you a lot for sharing your nice video! This happiness to hear this beautiful song!

  • おはようございます。とても美しい声ですね!ありがとうございます。

  • Lea Salonga was born to sing. Simple as that. She has the voice of angels....

  • @ang021 Really? You're saying Madonna sings better than Lea Salonga? Wow...

  • @ang021 are you being serious i had to stop watching the evita movie because madona's acting and singing were horrendous.

Lea's voice is so pure and amazing

  • @musicalmad1996 if madonna's acting was horrendous then the Golden Globe Awards are just a group of stupid people for picking madonna as Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her role in Evita? if yes, then you should make your own awards because you think you're better than them...and oh please, don't be full of yourself! Madonna is Madonna...and you are just a mosquito, no more, no less!

  • @tristfire15 um it's not unknown for award shows to pick unworthy winner, Catherine Zeta Jones at last years tonys anyone? So yah, i have the right to my own opinion. Actually I'm far from full of myself, i would go as far as saying I have serious self confidence issues but i have a passion for musical theatre and although i respect Madonna a highly successful recording artist, i don't see her as an amazing actor or musical theatre performer. I'm sorry we have a difference of opinion. xxx

  • @ang021 Yeah, and Vanessa Hudgens nailed RENT. -_-

  • Love this rendition... beautiful...

  • Gives me the chills, it's so great.

  • wow o wow! lea salonga has a crystal clear and voice. oh! so glad to be a filipino!

  • Best version !!!!! Another benchmark performance!

  • perfect.. splendid voice.. how i wish i could sing like her.. ^^,

  • Great song and singer. I used to sing along to this song almost 15 years ago. The tune came into my head and I could not remember the name of this song. Thanks much to Youtube letting me find it - otherwise I would be still going nuts trying figure out the name of this song!

  • selmalover...you are right, Madonna's version is MUCH better!!

a lot of people thought that Lea Salonga should have been in Evita instead of Madonna...but Madonna looks so much like Eva Peron that no one else but Madonna could have played the role.

  • @ftlmatt are you being serious i had to stop watching the evita movie because madona's acting and singing were horrendous.

and how superficial to say some is perfect for the role because she looks sorta like she can play it

Lea's voice is so pure and amazing

  • and it's live performance! how amazing is that?

  • Lea Salonga is amazing!

  • You cant beat Lea Salonga's voice!

  • Lea nailed this song; simply love it!

  • idol.....

  • Better version :)

  • Madonna's version is better

  • @selmalover you clearly don't don't know talent

  • I simply love her clear voices. So beautiful and peaceful to listen to.

  • She began her recording career at the age of ten with her first album, Small Voice, which received a gold certification.

  • much better version than madonna

  • @FFchol0812 She sings it very bery very beautiful, but it's a song about a women who knows that she's gonna die, a woman desperate and most of weaker then ever. In madonna's version you can hear that better

  • very close to the original, not the vocals but the instruments, cello and piano.

  • She has such awesome voice! Perfectly clear...

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • This is absolutely beautiful!

  • god, she's amazing. I'd kill to have a voice like that.

  • @HogwartsCastle yep, and Jasmine also.

  • emotionality and pitch wise better than anybody else !!

  • una vera cantante.come sempre meno se ne sentono

  • i wanna see her Evita in a theatre!!

And the director should put this song in it...such a nice song.

  • this is perfection.. im speechless.

  • Omg Lea Salonga is one of my fave musical theatre performers! I loved her as Eponine in Les MIs.

  • GOD I love her voice!!

  • I love Madonna's version, it stands alone in its own right, but damn, lea sings the hell out of this song, beautiful!

  • @JoelBermudezMercado While Lea Salonga is technically better, I don't get the same emotion that I get from other versions, including Madonna's. Evita Peron is dying here as she sings to her husband in what is supposed to be a delicate, tender moment. The voice needs to sound somewhat strained and the words shouldn't flow as melodically given the context.

  • goosebumps!

  • all emotions--NOT SCREAMING....VOICE CLEAR LIKE BELL. not murmuring the words. EXCELLENT.

  • She got a very nice voice.

  • oh.i love it!!!

  • ....

  • Wonderful. I actually like Madonna's version of this, though usually singing tecnique is agains a warm color of the voice and i prefere Madonna's pathos to (for example) to Elein Paige tecnique.

This version has both, so it's very thrilling for me :-)

  • Excellent. This is how it's supposed to be.

  • What a poerful rendition of this song. Very intense and beautiful. Calling Broadway producers, next time please consider Lea Salonga for Evita.

  • Sorry, should be powerful.

  • yes, this is better than madonna's version but this song was only an additional since before madonna did evita this song was not part of the musical that was why it was nominated for an oscar and won

  • @Victor12ful It is powerful, it's heartbreaking. power isn't all about belting and screaming, it's about soul and emotion.

  • how exquisite. Just like a bell beautiful

  • I think this is so beautiful!

  • Lea is absolutely amazing!! :) first time i ever heard her was on a video clip of her audition for miss saigon singing stars and moon, and even since then been a massive fan, gorgeous! x

  • The best version ever. Pitch and enunciation wise.

  • I love this version so much more! Idk why, but there's something about her...

  • I think her live version is better than Madonna's. If you hear Madonna's liver version of You must Love me, she sounded a little bit off at some part of the song. But both are still great though.

  • close your eyes, and you can see mulan singing this...:)

  • or Princess Jasmine. lol.

  • She actually really doesn't sound like Princess Jasmine anymore. her voice really matured a few years after Aladdin, I feel like Princess Jasmine sounds like a girl, where as Mulan sounds like a woman

  • after rewatching Aladdin, I agree with you. a lot can change vocally in 6 years. as she gets older, she can only get better. :)

  • love Lea

  • OH MY GOD! The tears just fell! Been a fan of Madonna's version, but this was just so hauntingly beautiful.

  • Not bad, but Madonna's much better, more sincere and heartfelt.

  • sounds good

  • This has to be one of the most moving of ALW's songs. Kudos to Ms. Salonga for interpreting it so beautifully.

  • anyone can sing a madonna song better i suppose.....but its not madona

  • never listened with so much pleasure to you must love me before. so beautiful, I feel tears coming.

  • ok guys lea is a trained vocalist unlike madonna a pop-star...you're comparing apples to oranges now.

i like both versions but lea's seems more like a vocal excecise to me...it's perfect but not as emotional as madonn's film version.

  • my dotti wooggie will be like her...

  • Wonderful! 5/5 WAY better than Madonna

  • i agree I like Lea's version better but to be honest Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote this song specifically for Madonna...

  • meaning mediocre arrangement for madonna's range, yes.

  • wow wow wow, lea salonga just gets better. Maddona eat your heart out, you only wish you could sing like this

  • This is the first time I have heard Lea Salonga sing anything other than 'Miss Saigon'. This is an excellent performance. I can't explain why, but it's not as sad as the version sung in the film by Madonna...but it is still an excellent version.

  • no singer can sing like lea salonga.

  • ahh! what control!

  • Jen.

Thanks so much. Yes, I know Lea and she is absolutely wonderful performing this Song. Another Song of hers that you will really love of hers is "As If We Never Said Goodbye". I'll send it to you.

    Robby *****Stars.

  • Love it -thats is the one I nearly sent you, but opted for this instead -cheers.

  • Lea Salonga has one of the purest, most gentle voices I've heard.

She is the definition of "tone-center."

    God, what a voice.

  • what is this song about?

  • Well, it is original song in musical Evita when Eva Duarte de Peron knows she will die by cancer, God may care about her soul. Search wikipedia for deeper explainings (or whatever word is in english)

  • Wonderful!

  • wow,she sings it so well

  • Lea Salonga is so talented. Is there anything she can't or hasn't sung?

  • Lea has sung this song beautifully in her own way. She's a great singer. She didn't really sing this song in memory of Eva. I think this song is universal. Any two lovers who are in the relationship for a long time can relate to the persona in this song. She implicitly expresses her fear of losing her loved one. She may also be experiencing conflicts inside her because of the things that have changed between them, but assures him that her love for him remains the same.

  • this is quite fine. but isn't this part supposed to be when eva peron's dying? so she shouldn't be singing with much power or energy. she should imitate the sound of a dying person.

  • this wasn't sung in the context of the show, therefore if she had sung it as a dying person would it would have sounded silly.

  • To natandella, soquel4448, and funkyfairy88,

    I love Salonga's voice.

Have you tried ozone and/or hydrogen peroxide injection therapy? I would look into it deeply. Your average doctor will tell you it is bad because he is a slave to pharmaceutical bosses. Think homeopathy doctor and find one who is familiar with this therapy.

    Oxygenated blood kills disease.

Eat alcaline foods, use alkaseltzer several times a week or baking soda, all alleviate acidity which is primary cause of disease.

  • I love Lea but this version is too dull. Madonna's version is more emotional and overall the song suited her voice more. It was written for her after all.

  • I like her voice.

But I like Madonna's voice coz it's lower and sounds a bit masculine at times... and I guess it reminds me better of Eva's personality...... you know? She was strong and a bit verbally violent..

I dunno... I'm just an admirer of the real Eva..

  • As a sufferer of fibromyalgia these words mean a lot. I played them to my husband to try and explain how I felt.

  • my sister probably also has fibromyalgia. is there a treatment for it ? thx

  • There isn't a cure. There are many different 'treatments' that may help for some but not all. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and my aunt has Fibro.

  • she shouldof beingthe star of the show

  • everyone is better than madonna... madonna doesn't have a theater voice, she has a pop talk-singing voice.. it's horrible.

  • way better than Madonna in my opinion

  • WOW... this song shows how clear her voice is. loved it!

  • i love Ms. Lea. She was my idol ever since i was little... :-)

  • The song and the interpretation are very haunting.

I could cry everytime I listen to, because then I sea Evita focred to wait for death.

  • this is how i imagine angels to sound like

  • Nice job singing this. I didn't feel the angst of someone about to lose their lover however. When Brooke White sings this, I just want to cry in anguish.

Lea Salonga has a wonderful voice. I just didn't well up inside over this performance.

  • its very nice!!!

  • Ok i just went to see this play for the first time and i cried my eyes out from before this song to the end, is that wrong?? I couldnt help but feel compassion for her at the end........

  • It's a beautiful version but doesn't sound like if Eva Peron was singing it (the character of course). Her voice is too sweet and very technical but that gives the song another dimension and context. Excellent rendition anyway!

  • when i want to relax, enjoy good music, i just listen to songs & voice of lea.... soothing to the ear, crystal-clear..voice of an angel. singing actress like her that i appreciate the most of being around. when i like to hear real music, instead of the screaming divas that are all around 2day dominating the airwaves.

  • Wonderful. Then again, I've adored Lea as a musical interpreter since Les Mis. Nice!

  • Bravo, Beautiful rendition, crystal clear, perfect enunciation, with feeling and emotion. Thank you.

  • Err think you'll find Lea Salonga is one of the top actors on stage out there. Yes maddona is good with here version but remember everyone is good in ther own way. My ex said the same and i've not taken tmy ex to a musical since as you can't compare film to stage there totally different!!

  • You got to be kidding!

  • youre crazy. get your ears checked.

  • \/ i am a chick and love lea salonga and this song but not that much yikes\/ jk jk i dont think i would cry though

  • Hmmm. I kind of like, Madonna's version of You Must Love Me. Better. Even Though Lea's is beautiful too, Madonna's just my first Eva. The first time I heard this song. I burst in tears. I mean literally burst into tears. I cried so much. This song really tells you how much Eva really loved her husband. She's just scared to leave him. May Eva Rest In Peace! God Bless Her.

  • her father has a crap attitude

  • This is exactly what a completly trained and perfect voice sounds like. No one has diction like her. In her own league. Now and forever.

  • Leah has such a beautiful voice. I wish to be like her some day

  • nice!

  • oo wow . I love You Lea !! She is Beautiful!

  • i did not know what she looked like, and her voice completely matches her beauty. she's an amazing singer. ^_^

  • She sings beautiful but the best of that son,g the master is Madonna, yes I know she hasn't the best voice but she was the first to sing that song and she made an exelent role in Evita. Her Golden Globe was not free.

  • So perfect ... a so much better version then Madonna's ... Well-sung!! I love Lea's performance so much... this song simply brings tears to my eyes.

  • I like Madonna's version better.

Solange's version is too up tight and technical.

Madonna's version is well sung and more emotional, actually.

And the way she transformed the song now in 2008 and sings it on her new tour is wonderful.

But, anyway, Solange is a great singer.

  • Salonga please, Lea SALONGA, not Solange :))

  • i have to agree.... especially the tour version. madonna's recording is more emotional too

  • I can't listen to this song without crying my eyes out

  • Beautiful!

  • relaxing...

  • i cried my eyes out
