I know of a person whom had ECT and it gave them their life back. From what I can remember they said that it was a low current and did cause intense pain. She also had said that her depression and anxiety were gone, like she was 20 years old again and felt fantastic.
She was the exact same person she said and looked forward to a happier life.
I think what's being portrayed here is extremely high voltage that would cause extensive damage - not a real theraputic procedure !
@SubConCrusher I know of a former co-worker who suffered loss of havingness after getting laid-off from a well-known entertainment company whose massive library of famous movies you probably have seen. Since production is the basis of morale, it's no wonder she felt like a loser for being unemployed in her forties and being too sensitive to take just any job. She really needed kid gloves. She was electroshocked. HER LIFE WAS FURTHER RUINED and to this day, she admits it made her Suicidal.

This is not ANY MORE torture than is Chemotherapy, or radiation therapy, or any surgery where they cut your body open. Or any kind of neurosurgery....or heart surgery. Why is this any worse than that. It helps MANY people...like myself.. That's YOUR opinion that it's torture because for MANY it's a salvation and our only hope. Just because something looks a certain way doesn't make it torture. Then I guess ALL treatments and medications are torture because they carry worse side effects.

My ex mother-in law who I was very close to is in a beautiful rest home where she begged her family not to put her when she got old. She was put there and visited weekly for a while and now rarely. Even her own son who lives in her house hardly ever sees here. They won't let me talk with her. She's on heavy drugs and I'm sure getting shock cuz it's big money. I hate these horrible people in this horrible industry.

While working on my BA in Psych I was not told about how damaging some of the "treatments" given in the name of "mental health" are. I left the field after having worked on the psychiatric wards of two hospitals and after being expected to assist in this barbaric proceedure.

I was subject 12 treatments in 6 weeks.
While I changed daily from Mania to depression. while on a psych ward in Denmark
I'm Bipolar. - I did not want the treatment, nor all the side effects.
memeory loss for most of those 6 weeks. After I would stop in mid-sentences and have forgotten what is was trying to say.
I still don't remember most of those 6 horible weeks - which is probably for the better. I only have a transcript of the "stay".
