Every time I'm on the net, I play this to fix my day and on the other hand, to be "pathetic" with myself because I didn't play this piece even thow I could some 30 years ago when I was studyed violine.I feel like shet. It's like we said: Better than sex....
I asume it was recorded on "Het Grachtenfestival" a yearly classical event, round the canals of Amsterdam.. You can anchor your boat, drink some wine and listen to beautiful music..
Also, the violist is really amazing and gives the song a lovely depth that couldn't really be matched with a different instrument. I don't know much about violas (I'm a violinist) but he seems to be doing just as good of a job as Janine. They're both amazing musicians who put their heart and soul into this song so how about we sit back and enjoy it instead of bickering back and forth about whether Itzhak Perlman's performance is better that Janine's or whether the violist sucks or not?
at 3:58 the look on Janine's face is priceless... She looks as if she were in a playful banter with Julian. Which is kind of how the parts are played at that section. She shows so much emotion when she plays; I love it.
The violist is Julian Rachlin, and he deserves every bit as much credit. This is really a duo, with shared responsibility and virtuosity, rather than a piece for violin with viola accompaniment.
If you think playing a viola is mundane, it's like taking a minivan and beating a sports car around a racetrack (like Tuskaba or Laguna Seca). Means you can manuever with a larger system better than the smaller system can. :-p
I find this to be the best recording of this piece but the audience made the sound of perfection to listening to the background of imperfection with perfection.
@beccacha1 I completely agree with you there. I'm a violist as well but I only dream I could play this. If I were one of the people on those boat I would have been dead because I would have been so completely dazed by the ensemble and fell in and not cared for anything but the incredible sound!
@TempoFurioso I thought so too! I hated that they messed up a perfect recording of the passacaglia. But I never knew beautiful music would be given such a manner of rudeness. Whistles and they zoomed in on a person laughing when they are doing pizzicato. They should be very lucky probably a free concert. Because some of those people wouldn't being doing that in a concert hall. They act like they should expect the music when they sacriiced hours.
I agree with you. I know this pices is also played by violin and Cello, however, it's better sound by violin and viola to me. The ensemble they make is JUST fantastic~!!
@beccacha1 Yup yup. As a violist, I have to say that playing a viola is very similar to a violin. this piece is almost equally balanced between violin and viola. You'd know this if you've seen the sheet music and played it. ^.^
@beccacha1 ... a 'racist' music joke: What's a unison for a violist... a major second jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja... pathetically cruel joke... sorry I read your comment and felt in the need to say it jejejejeje.
I am a professional concert artist. I must say that this is truly the best performance that I have heard of this piece. Individuality, technique, and true ensemble. BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO! Simply the best! Both performers are lucky to have found each other. It is hard to find a partner on a high level that you can agree with.
@musicproducers i agree with you, but you should also liston to alina pogostkina and david cohen, it is not a good recording but brilliantely played and as good as janine jansen. also worth to liston is julia fischer together with daniel müller-schott.
@goethethegreat You think, that just because Perlman is a great violinist, he cant be compared with Jansen, she is exceptionally talented and is an amazing artist as well!!! So why dont you go and shut your Mouth!
@marvill1760 Relax have a xanex, no need to get emotional. Have you heard the Perlman Zuckerman performance? I think that Janine Jansen is a talented violinist. I was not disparaging Janine, I was simply saying; that perfomance (the Perlman Zuckerman) is in another league.
@goethethegreat Yes I have, and i Prefer by far the Jansen because i feel that hers is more lively and faster which entertains a little more when pertaining to this pice.

very beautiful....very interesting musically and techinically perfect....
dear retardico,
Please i kindly ask u to write the name of the fantastic violin and viola player in this case.....his name is Julian Rachlin....It is not only janine jansen who is playing.....thanks
Janine Jansen is awesome. She always seems to play 'fast' but it suits the tempo here. I had never heard of Julian Rachlin, but his viola is impressive too. btw, this was at Prince's Canal (Prinsengracht) in Amsterdam.
Fuss Fuss Fuss. Just enjoy the beautiful music. They are both magnificent musicians doing a fine job of entertaining the people where it matters- out there in public!
no i don't like th violist...you can tell he's a violinist becuase of how wimpy he is on the c string. he's a violinist and shouldn't play the viola! stick to yuri bashmet. but still, a great version, love the tremolo around 2:37

J. J. is without question a superb violinist and this was executed beautifully..I thought just a bit tooo fast though...made me wonder if they were in a hurry to get to the potty or freezing. I absolutely love this performance...so full of energy, and it is so organic! They play really well off of one another. I also love the drunk people in the background tapping their fingers, LOL. Wonderful!

wow, what a performance.... I first thought Jansen was nothing more than a new sexy marketing scheme... I admit it, I was wrong...
As for Julian Rachlin, Ive never heard of him till now, but I just went to Amazon and checked out some samples....WOW!... Thank you to the Retardico for posting this!
It's Julian Rachlin, her couple, he's one of the greatest violinist of this days i don't like him but i must admit that he's a great violinist and play's very well. It's just that i cannot understand how a beatiful women like her it's with him XD i guess he must be a good person and other things we don't know xD

Halvorsen originally wrote it for violin and viola but because of the C string it can be played in cello too.

wow, what a performance.... I first thought Jansen was nothing more than a new sexy marketing scheme... I admit it, I was wrong...
As for Julian Rachlin, Ive never heard of him till now, but I just went to Amazon and checked out some samples....WOW!... Thank you to the Retardico for posting this!

AMAZING! BRAVISSIMI!

It's just that i cannot understand how a beatiful women like her it's with him XD i guess he must be a good person and other things we don't know xD

ahahahhahaahha that made my day. such ugly dude. no way they're going to last. janine jansen is such a beautiful violinist in her playing and her looks. but i guess if your looking in the violin world there arent many attractive people lol

Rachlin won the title of Eurovision Young Musician of the Year at age 13, around the time you were wearing diapers. I guess they are still on?

This is the Passacaille, from the Suite Nº 7 HWV 432 by G.F. Haendel. It should be on the tags.
