  • At 0:07 she plays.

  • Don't get too excited, 4:01.

  • ...........and then die

  • Janinne I could see this video 1000 times, again. Blessings

  • Oh man, that gave me the chills, how beautiful!!

  • This is Prinsengrachtconcert, the start of the cultural season at the end of summer in Amsterdam.

  • what kind of event was this??

  • Muito Bom, adorei, Fantástico =)

  • yiiiha

  • awesome~!:))

  • I'd say : Janine Jansen, violin, and Julian Rachlin, viola. Beautiful !

    Congratulations to you both !

  • Every time I'm on the net, I play this to fix my day and on the other hand, to be "pathetic" with myself because I didn't play this piece even thow I could some 30 years ago when I was studyed violine.I feel like shet. It's like we said: Better than sex....

  • who is the musician that paly the viola?

  • @leonbattista83 that would be Julian Rachlin

  • @leonbattista83 Julian Rachlin, he plays both violin and viola.

  • wow, incredibly impressive; such precision! Personally, i prefer it taken a bit slower but this is a fabulous recording.

  • I asume it was recorded on "Het Grachtenfestival" a yearly classical event, round the canals of Amsterdam.. You can anchor your boat, drink some wine and listen to beautiful music..

  • was that a vuvuzella at the end :D:D:D

  • Where is this recorded? It is great how many people are around them, outside

  • @bokas5 This is a part of "Het Grachtenfestival" in Amsterdan

  • Also, the violist is really amazing and gives the song a lovely depth that couldn't really be matched with a different instrument. I don't know much about violas (I'm a violinist) but he seems to be doing just as good of a job as Janine. They're both amazing musicians who put their heart and soul into this song so how about we sit back and enjoy it instead of bickering back and forth about whether Itzhak Perlman's performance is better that Janine's or whether the violist sucks or not?

  • at 3:58 the look on Janine's face is priceless... She looks as if she were in a playful banter with Julian. Which is kind of how the parts are played at that section. She shows so much emotion when she plays; I love it.

  • Who's the violist?

  • Just love how her dress is blowing in the wind at 2:54 ! Fits perfectly with the music. And this is just a fantastic interpretation!

  • Looks like their playing in a dutch town... is this amsterdam?

  • Comment removed

  • the viola seems a little bit too clumsy :/ still brilliant though

  • I would have loved to be in the audience. Or maybe on one of the boats tied up. Sipping on some Champagne. Eating some cheese. Or some......

  • 2:54 this epic wind comes and blows JJ's dress. Totally legit.

  • The violist is Julian Rachlin, and he deserves every bit as much credit. This is really a duo, with shared responsibility and virtuosity, rather than a piece for violin with viola accompaniment.

  • Thay are realy good but anyway I think that Zukermann and Perlman are better

  • sorry but ı didn't like her playing .... I love when Julia Fischer is playing this :) Julia is playing with more emotion...

  • Wonderful performance! violinist Janine Jansen (Yansen) is terrific and so is the violist.

  • Why are they showing us the back of peoples heads? *idiotic videography....excellent music....stellar musicians*

  • Slow down

  • If you think playing a viola is mundane, it's like taking a minivan and beating a sports car around a racetrack (like Tuskaba or Laguna Seca). Means you can manuever with a larger system better than the smaller system can. :-p

  • Lord!... So breathtaking... No more words...

  • A gratest performance!!

  • Amazing! Bravo!

  • I find this to be the best recording of this piece but the audience made the sound of perfection to listening to the background of imperfection with perfection.

  • Oh. My. God.

This is the absolute best recording of this piece I have ever EVER heard.

  • Julian Rachlin is on the viola, isn't he?

  • And they are couples! from wikipedia.

  • Very nice! good music and good situation. (TS)

  • @beccacha1 I completely agree with you there. I'm a violist as well but I only dream I could play this. If I were one of the people on those boat I would have been dead because I would have been so completely dazed by the ensemble and fell in and not cared for anything but the incredible sound!

  • some people have no manners... how dare them whistle when true artists are making art on the spot... they should be lucky, those ingrates

  • @TempoFurioso I thought so too! I hated that they messed up a perfect recording of the passacaglia. But I never knew beautiful music would be given such a manner of rudeness. Whistles and they zoomed in on a person laughing when they are doing pizzicato. They should be very lucky probably a free concert. Because some of those people wouldn't being doing that in a concert hall. They act like they should expect the music when they sacriiced hours.

  • wwooooooooooooooo! Impresionante! De mayor quiero tocas así! no! Ya! quiero tocar así!

  • violas too loud, doesn't seem to pay as much attention to dynamics as janine.

  • I agree w/ musicproducers. Their ensemble is AMAZING

  • Her shoulder drives me crazy... It's like the hunchback of Notredame.... Apart from that, she is friggin fantastic!!!! lol!!!

  • mein Gott!!!! ist das so was Erstaunliches!!!!

  • It's really nice!!!

And general atmosphere of the concert is just fantastic... Open air, evening, disposition... Everyone seems to be very kind and happy...

  • UHMM...the viola part is JUST as important. give some credit to him as well? (sorry im a violist)

  • I agree with you. I know this pices is also played by violin and Cello, however, it's better sound by violin and viola to me. The ensemble they make is JUST fantastic~!!

  • I think Itzy and Pinky "branded" this piece to be violin/viola.

  • @beccacha1 he is julian rachlin and you are right he is as good as janine

  • @beccacha1 Yup yup. As a violist, I have to say that playing a viola is very similar to a violin. this piece is almost equally balanced between violin and viola. You'd know this if you've seen the sheet music and played it. ^.^

  • @beccacha1

    HEAR HEAR!!!

  • @beccacha1 I am a violonist and i totaly agree with you !!! they have same level of difficulty in that piece and they both play very well !

  • @beccacha1 never apologize! it's rude to not be acknowledged! : ) (sorry I'm a violinist, lol)

  • @beccacha1 ... a 'racist' music joke: What's a unison for a violist... a major second jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja... pathetically cruel joke... sorry I read your comment and felt in the need to say it jejejejeje.

  • @beccacha1 So right!!!

  • very good

  • quite an avant-guard approach... anybody else done this piece on strings? maybe quartet?

and I think I've seen the luciferish-looking fellow playing violin as well.

  • I am a professional concert artist. I must say that this is truly the best performance that I have heard of this piece. Individuality, technique, and true ensemble. BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO! Simply the best! Both performers are lucky to have found each other. It is hard to find a partner on a high level that you can agree with.

  • THIS IS SO MOVING !!!!!

  • @musicproducers i agree with you, but you should also liston to alina pogostkina and david cohen, it is not a good recording but brilliantely played and as good as janine jansen. also worth to liston is julia fischer together with daniel müller-schott.

  • @musicproducers you think this is in the same league as the Perlman Zuckerman perfomance. What are you listening to?

  • @goethethegreat You think, that just because Perlman is a great violinist, he cant be compared with Jansen, she is exceptionally talented and is an amazing artist as well!!! So why dont you go and shut your Mouth!

  • @marvill1760 Relax have a xanex, no need to get emotional. Have you heard the Perlman Zuckerman performance? I think that Janine Jansen is a talented violinist. I was not disparaging Janine, I was simply saying; that perfomance (the Perlman Zuckerman) is in another league.

  • @goethethegreat Yes I have, and i Prefer by far the Jansen because i feel that hers is more lively and faster which entertains a little more when pertaining to this pice.

  • L'altiste s'appelle Julian Rachlin :)

Prinsengrachtconcert Amsterdam 2005 (Amsterdam Princes Canal Concert)

The Prinsengracht concert is an annual open air concert in the centre of Amsterdam, on the main Amsterdam channel, called the Prinsengracht. It is held in the middle of August, and this years star performer was Janine Jansen.

  • very beautiful....very interesting musically and techinically perfect....

    dear retardico,

Please i kindly ask u to write the name of the fantastic violin and viola player in this case.....his name is Julian Rachlin....It is not only janine jansen who is playing.....thanks

  • FANTASTIIIIIIQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !

  • I was!!! The prinsengrachtconcert is amazing! The atmosphere.... and Janine Jansen is a very special player..... wauw

  • Oh to be there that night!

  • Quelle prestation!!!

  • It's in Amsterdam. Every year, we have an open-air concert on the canals. Beautiful summer-night atmosphere, every time!

  • Where are they playing? Which City?

By the way, Janine and Julian are going to play together in Vienna on 13th and 15th of June, 2010. (Mozart KV320d, Konzerthaus)

  • Amsterdam I think

  • If only I lived anywhere near Europe.. :(

  • why? you also have very talented people over there... ;)

  • Is the guy Rachlin?

  • Yes he is!

  • yeah

  • incredible. Beautiful music and a beautiful sound. just imagine being able to enjoy this open-air concert on a boat!

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing! Retardico, you should mention the name of the violist too, it's Julian Rachlin.

  • can anyone tell me what's the name of this melody?

  • It is "Passacaglia" from Haëndel's Suite No. 7 in G minor, HWV 432.

  • thanks :)

  • Perfection. And those are no easy conditions for a performance... But again, perfect.

As a favourite, this one comes second only to the older Ruha/Agoston interpretation!

  • eshte shqiptare mos harroni

  • Wow, they are so great together... and they actually dated...

  • Really? They definately make beautiful music together! Perfect syncrony!! Amazing!!!

  • nice!

  • Look at the man's face!

He is completely into the tune!

  • intense

  • greattt!!

  • Janine Jansen is awesome. She always seems to play 'fast' but it suits the tempo here. I had never heard of Julian Rachlin, but his viola is impressive too. btw, this was at Prince's Canal (Prinsengracht) in Amsterdam.

  • I love the performance and the venue!

Just one thing, this piece is not written by Händel it is written by the Norwegian composer Johann Halvorsen and is based on a theme by Händel.

  • nice duet combo!!

  • also what is that lady/man cant tell laughing at at 3:51?

  • i think they were moving with the beat

  • its amazing to see such a response from all those people, classical music is still alive and well.

    just wondering, is that amsterdam?

  • Fuss Fuss Fuss. Just enjoy the beautiful music. They are both magnificent musicians doing a fine job of entertaining the people where it matters- out there in public!

  • Hey, I think I know this place!

  • no i don't like th violist...you can tell he's a violinist becuase of how wimpy he is on the c string. he's a violinist and shouldn't play the viola! stick to yuri bashmet. but still, a great version, love the tremolo around 2:37

  • WOW! I played this in high school... I loved this piece, and they both do an amazing job!!

  • In my opinion the Violist, whoever he is, outshined Janine. I found my ears concentrating on his sound rather than Janine's.

No disrespect to Janine, but this Violist is simply fantastic.

  • I agree with you 100% !

  • The name of this Violist it's Julian Rachlin, and in fact he's violinist, look at this video : Igudesman's "Crazy World of Violin Playing"

  • it only seems that he outshined her because the contast between the pitches of each intrument sticks out. janine jansen outshines anybody

  • and the fact that he had a slightly more technical part that Janine made it seem that he was better.

  • well you ARE entitled you your opinion, but both of your arguments make no sense. the contrast between the pitches makes the viola stick out? ok that's wrong; the violin is brighter and higher in pitch so it naturally sticks out more (unless you have a great violist who, with talent, outshines the violinist). secondly, how does a "more technical part" make the viola stand out more? anyway, janine is good, i never said she wasn't. you just don't make sense.

  • holy crap that's fast in the beginning!

  • if you want to see fast, view "mozarts violin concerto 5 (5of5) with Janine jansen

  • I think Angels are glad to hear such music performed with so nice woman.

  • Fantastic!

  • NAME OF THE VIOLA PLAYER?

  • Probably Julian Rachlin, but I`m not sure. If I`m wrong please correct me ;)

  • Junior Oliveira, i just saw it in another video

  • Julian Rachlin is right.

  • Leonardo DiCaprio.

  • This is simply amazing!!! wow!

  • VIVE HAENDEL

  • Thanks to Holland, thanks to the nice Dutch people for giving us Janine Jansen!

  • No problem!

  • J. J. is without question a superb violinist and this was executed beautifully..I thought just a bit tooo fast though...made me wonder if they were in a hurry to get to the potty or freezing. It was almost like "dueling banjos" Alex Markov has a really nice rendition with his Father which is just the right speed and Rachel Barton has an absolutely gorgeous version with a cello on her "Storming the Citadel" CD..though I still think JJ is a marvelous violinist!

  • I absolutely love this performance...so full of energy, and it is so organic! They play really well off of one another. I also love the drunk people in the background tapping their fingers, LOL. Wonderful!

  • hola...como te llamas?

  • For your information: the piece is performed at the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam.

  • My favorite part is from 1:45 to 2:13

  • is that Rachim with Jansen?

  • Julian RACHLIN.

  • when I compare this performance to the perlman-zuckerman one this one is a little faster in tempo, they articulate some things better and overall has a little bit more flair, though I will always stand true to the perfectness of the performances of perlman and pinky, this was a very good performance. By the way, where the hell was this performed, looks like a great venue, right by the water.

  • awesome!

  • Qué placer tan grande es escuchar instrumentistas tan musicos!!! Muchas gracias por este hermoso concierto! GQ

  • Rachlin is basically a violinist but he also plays the viola and he certainly does play the viola in this performance :)

  • I havent heard anything this good in a long, long, time.

  • Beautiful performance; but it sounds like viola, not violin - I mean the guy... is it possible?

  • Yeah... It's a duet for violin and viola...

  • well, i know, but i've already heard version for violin and cello so i was not sure :)

    anyway, thanks :)

  • Halvorsen originally wrote it for violin and viola but because of the C string it can be played in cello too.

  • wow, what a performance.... I first thought Jansen was nothing more than a new sexy marketing scheme... I admit it, I was wrong...

As for Julian Rachlin, Ive never heard of him till now, but I just went to Amazon and checked out some samples....WOW!... Thank you to the Retardico for posting this!

  • AMAZING! BRAVISSIMI!

  • Outstanding.....kneeldown at once, all Janine offenders. Bravissimo for the couple. I am truly Jelous

  • who is the guy?

  • It's Julian Rachlin, her couple, he's one of the greatest violinist of this days i don't like him but i must admit that he's a great violinist and play's very well. It's just that i cannot understand how a beatiful women like her it's with him XD i guess he must be a good person and other things we don't know xD

  • Rachlin won the title of Eurovision Young Musician of the Year at age 13, around the time you were wearing diapers. I guess they are still on?

  • what about joshua bell? he looks alright...lol

  • Yes, it´s Passacaglia from Haendel, arranged by Johan Halvorsen

  • splendid!

    JJ duo, both are wonderful!

cf JJ duo Janine and Julian

  • This is the Passacaille, from the Suite Nº 7 HWV 432 by G.F. Haendel. It should be on the tags.

  • Janine, je bent een muzikale engel! AWESOME!

  • i love this piece and the way they perform it, but i love janines passion better than his, marvelous playing though. (check out anne akiko meyer).
