i'm not sure, but i have an idea. maybe he took a large block of foam the size of the whole bowl and carved into the shape of the bowl. then he put a layer of plaster or something similar over the whole thing and let it dry, then sand and laquer it so its smooth, hope i helped. try it, it might work
