The elephant with the injured front leg was from a landmine in an illegal logging operation on the Burmese border. Basically every elephant you see painting, in a trekking camp or doing circus tricks has been pajaan trained. They are put in a wooden crate and brutally beaten for up to 1 week in order to break their spirit. Every elephant that paints has been through this. Please be responsible and do not buy products from Thailand that ridicule and cause harm to our national symbol.
@elephantnews: I'm sure there is some torture in the elephant painting world...there is some sort of torture in everything we do with our animals...people can be very nasty. But to say that all are tortured i find to be simply untrue. I do know that many elephants suffered at the end of the logging industry because the mahouts couldn't afford to feed them. So many taught them how to paint and paintings are sold to help pay for their treatment and maintenance.
this is making me wonder just how smart our animals are on this planet. an elephant really painted a picture and did a wonderful job so im gonna think twice the next time i see an animal without a home and just be nicer in general to our animals
It was forced to do it over about a month of training. Elephants are incredibly intelligent, in fact so intelligent they don't really see the need to paint. It's only humans that find that fun.
yep so unbelievable it's not true. They're forced to do it. Check out my Youtube channel elephantnews for the truth on elephant painting and other stupid tricks.
if this elephant taught other elephants how to paint, it would make history. it would be a cultural revolution. elephants spreading that culture! The significance of this is huge. Man was originally the only artist. Art is associated with culture. If this elephant teaches other elephants to paint without rewards, it would be huge!
@new80waverocco: and how are you so sure of this? Elephants are INCREDIBLY smart animals. How do you know that maybe she learned how to paint all by herself!
I know this because I live and work with elephants here in Thailand. No elephant in the world teaches themselves to paint. Every elephant here paints the same pictures. They're all the same because they are forced to do it. I've seen the training myself. A brush is taped to the trunk and they are guided over about 1 month to paint a specific picture. They are hit with a bull hook to the back of the head if they make a mistake. Sorry to spoil your illusions but trust me it's the truth, I seen it.
ive been there for volunteering.. and thank god i saw the video before going .. i have now one of this amazing drawing .. very cute . Mine is an elephant with a bird :)
@elephantnews: oh great an Asian version of peta! Watched your video, but didn't see any real torture. Oh and the first scene of the elephant with the injured front left leg...yeah, that was taken way out of context. That video is of an elephant recuperating at an elephant hospital in Thailand!
im actually watching the show on nat geo wild where this video is from... to the ppl who thinks its bullshit its not, just watch the show "wild on tape"
It frankly amazes me that a non-human (my apologies mz-elephant) can have the needed depth of perspective to achieve any, and this case huge quality results! We are definitely seeing more than meets the eye! In the natural habitat, how would this be appropriated and used?
Do nome of you wonder why we don't see elephants painting on trees with mud using a stick? This animal has an amazing memory, vivid enough to remember every lashing for every wrong stroke of the brush.
This painting shows amazing self-awareness. To paint so well, not abstracts as earlier animal artists have done, but impressionistically is astounding. Brilliant simplicity.
@cherishsaaays Thats how you train animals... When a dog pisses in your house you hit him/her or rub their face on that part of the rug and tell them to not do that. So, meh.
@Sgrand80; this has the same logic as: When your one year old daughter pisses herself, you hit her and then rub her face in it? Animals feel pain, genius. They have beating hearts and personalities and nerve endings, just like humans.
Not sure that's real. They could have trained it to paint, but I'm not convinced it was really creative. Impressive nonetheless, but color me skeptical.
I'm not so sure about miraculous, but it sure is impressive. The way it was portrayed seems to suggest it's an original painting, though, and I'm not sure if that's the case.

As amazing as I thought this was... it turns out it was a trick. Notice how the guy next to elephant stays next to it the whole entire time. He's using hand movements to guide the elephant. If you notice in the majority of these kind of videos, there's always a trainer next to a painting elephant.
Great Gajendra (the mighty elephant) offering lotus to Lord Vishnu. Please search for "Gajendra, Vishnu" in Google images and check for yourself. AWESOME..

I'd like to know the psychology behind an animal being able to recognize itself by it's shape, and reproduce that shape. Or how it painted itself holding up a flower. Is it a gift? Do elephants feel kindness towards humans?
even if the elephant is trained to do this it doesn't matter the fact is she can freaking paint and on top of that its amazing better than a lot of people
@MrAnonymousPoster Or, perhaps it is that painting requires a *lot* of fine motor control - which an elephant's trunk isn't typically adapted to - and she's doing her best to hold it still... I doubt this is animal cruelty of the kind you seem to think it is.
looking around the differents videos online about this I noticed there is one motive repited. that makes me think that this isn`t a real product of the animal´s creativity. This people only trained this animals with the positive reforce technique wich, in the end, it's nothing but the same that is used in circus and other shows..
In a few words, it's less that it seems to be.
I'm sorry if there is any mistake in the writing, it`s been years since the last time i used english
Look at the freaking amount of effort she's putting into it, trying to get the lines right. Screw religious people who believe animals were put here by their god just for decoration and never given a 'soul'.
@snakeinthereeds hear, hear. Non-humans have lives of their own which are just as amazing as ours. Their lack of language often confounds us, but if one pays attention one can get a glimpse of what they are thinking and feeling.

looking around the differents videos online about this I noticed there is one motive repited. that makes me think that this isn`t a real product of the animal´s creativity.

Elephant tells a Camel
"Hey, why do you have boobs on your back? hahahaha!"
Camel tells Elephant:
"Ha, Ha, yeah, I would get that from a retard who has an oversized penis on his face...."
