I have rec'd responses in my inbox to this thread today....I have not posted anything to this thread for some time and have no wish to get back into this argument. Please do not send any more replies to me. I have had my say like everyone else on this thread and am finished, thank you.
here s a wild ideea use p2p aplications and encrypt the transfer of the downloaded files
also... internet in the states and/or canada is ridiculously slow and expensive...
for example in: Romania we have 100mbps national & 10-20 mbps international connections at as low as 9.99$ per month with unlimited traffic.
So... do yourselves a favor and retire in Romania: rents are as low as 250$ / month / appartment + food is cheap + you d be amased by how many people know english
So I don't have to keep coming back to argue proxy arguments to the greater point...
Seriously guys, all the points FOR UBB fall apart at every level. Providers are continually adding contradicting reasons for these policies. It's about money. Let's face it.
At the end of the day. At the end of all the math and the BS and stubborn opinions, UBB will simply cost consumers more and it will harm the competition that want to offer you better prices. It won't compensate under-usage. That's it.
Your assertion that "UBB packages forcefully offer less and charge more" is unfounded. Billing is based as follows: everyone starts at $X and receives the same minimum Y bandwidth and a basic speed. If you want more speed you pay $XX and you get YY bandwidth with a new, higher limit. You can go higher and pay $XXX and get YYY bandwidth. If you pay $X BUT use YYY bandwidth, why should someone else who pays $X and uses Y bandwidth be charged the same as you? You used extra bandwidth, you pay more.
No sir, my assertion is based on what I currently receive. I use 700-1000GB per month and I pay $60 a month. If UBB was enacted under the plan my provider initially proposed my bill would be $400+ a month. You're implying that my usage has a financial impact on my fellow users, when it doesn't. I still use the internet at peak times, and as they adapt to using more net-based services, the pricing plans in place will cost them as well. All UBB does is cost people more in the end.
@robbcarson Robb why are you pretending bandwidth is a finite resource? If it's not used, then it's wasted. People who use more data aren't put ahead of the line, if there are demands from other computers, our data is put on hold.
Yes, the basic cable and or phone line is present in the home, however, in the background you must buy "ports" from manufacturer's like Cisco and others to add to the system for every internet subscriber. I often hear people mistakenly say, "All the phone company has to do is flip a switch, what's the big deal?" IF you knew what has to happen in the background to provide the internet service you would not be so flippant. This is a total myth, the "magic" switch does not exist.
Why is everyone upset over this?? When was the last time you phoned up your utility company ie: electricity provider, natural gas provider etc. etc. and told them to STOP CHARGING ME BY METERING ME!! You haven't?? Well, let me suggest you and I have been paying USER BASED FEES for decades. It seems strange when the ISP's DARE charge us by a metered basis we suddenly feel the need to complain. Let's not be hypocrytical, next time you get your utility bill, call them too.
@robbcarson gas and power is actually a resource and it costs money to produce, being tapped into the interned that is only a bunch of electronic signals, it does not need to be extracted, refined, packaged and distributed. it costs them pennies and they are making millions.
and btw Nikola Tesla had the idea for giving power free WAY BACK!!! and then the greedy pigs came up with a better idea.
@IcomeINpeaceisim Did you know it takes miles and miles of copper/fiber optic material to get the internet signal to your home and to mine? Do you really want to stay with dial up internet or donate to companies that are trying to provide you with better, faster, more reliable connections through upgrading and research? This IS a resource that takes thousands of people in the background to work on to keep your HS working. I wish more people would think about HOW the signal gets to your home.
This is all interesting, but wholly irrelevant while people have the option of choosing companies that know how to invest in their own services. It's not up to the consumer to pay a premium for alleged future improvement. They already pay a service fee. No need for UBB on top. Especially when costs won't improve from the consumer perspective.
People want the product and features they pay for "today". Bell has had UBB for awhile. What did they do with the money? They bought CTV.
@bongsinacloset No, the public wants the latest and greatest, in fact they demand it. If you see an ad on American TV by say AT&T that they now offer 5X cell service which is faster and more reliable than what is offered in Canada. people phone BELL, Rogers and TELUS demanding the same new service. Opps. there goes millions on upgrading all the equipment to provide the new service. People do NOT want what the pay for today, they demand tomorrow now. That costs money.
Except that Bell just bought CTV... They're clearly already making a huge profit and expanding in areas not relevant to the single consumer that pays for something specific.
We're not talking about a negligible cost increase here, this is seriously going to harm the group that is most enthusiastic about the internet. We're talking bills $200 to $17000 per month. If the competition can take the wholesale cost of overages and offer competitive packages, they should be free to.
@notatowniegirl Let's see, multi-billion dollar investments to provide new cell towers throughout the Rockies out west for better coverage, oh, new towers in northern Ontario to provide service where there was none two years ago, hundreds of miles of new fiber optic cable for smaller cities and towns in the west and Maritimes, upgrade system from 3+ to the new 4G+ for cell users, new internet TV for subscribers in Alberta, BC, Ontario and Quebec, employee training to help run the new systems...
@robbcarson Why should our internet fees be paying for their cell phone networks? Why should I have to pay more for an independent ISP to support Rogers expansion?
@bongsinacloset The problem with business and the pubic is, you either keep up, get on the leading edge of the technology or get out of the way because your competitors will run right by you. Simple principle of business here: to spend money for upgrading, improvements and maintainance demanded by your customers you have to have money, where do you think it comes from?? If you are not in business to make a profit you have no business being in business. Ask an Aussie what they pay. YIKES!!
Problem? That's the beauty of competition. You can't tell me service providers aren't already turning a profit. New features are their risk. We subscribe to specific offerings. This much bandwidth, and this much speed. If demand for more was so high, no company would hesitate to invest into feature offerings that customers would volunteer for. Instead, UBB packages forcefully offer less and charge more. That's not competitive from a feature standpoint nor a price standpoint.
If the CRTC wants to be a real use to Canadians they could start by investigating some these these smaller 3rd party carriers that I believe are responsible for those long distance middle of the night phone scams. They get re-route a collect call from Canada via the USA and then you get a bill from the 3rd party carrier charged at over $6.00 per minute.Only people to benefit from that scam is the 3rd party carrier itself. CRTC does jack shit about that.
@iammathieu1 All ISPs have a limit, they just don't advertise the fact. But if one takes the time to read the small print then they will see that there is indeed a limit of about 60GB in place already and a charge rate they claim they may charge us if we go over it.
I used to have this real shitty ISP that had a monopoly in a remote area with a limit of 10GB per month. When I complained the dbags claimed that was a generous amount.
if they do this the only time i spend on the internet that i pay for would be to brodcast how debauching and unctuous this minuplation of consumers comunacation. Do we not have the right to be able to have just services, we do live in a democracy don't we?
Greedy or excessive - not a great way to frame innovators and early adopters of new communication forms. In defending Internet metering in general so explicitly, von Finckenstein has confirmed to Canadians that the CRTC does NOT stand behind their interests. The chair seems to be as insulated as ever from public opinion.
it costs 0.052 cents for bell to transmit a gb but it will cost us anywhere from 1-4 dollars per gb if we go over our limit. this is bullshit. apparently bell doesn't like us watching you-tube when we could be paying for the shitty bell express view dish.
If UBB takes effect...say goodbye to innovative ideas that can allow us to compete, as a Nation, in today's world of technology.
Canadian's spend more time on the internet then watching TV...last time I checked, I lived in a country free of being told what I can and cannot view.
