It should have been nominated in the best film, best director, and many more categories and WON!!

@Marcusx1980 hmmm, oscars have gone to worse films -- i'll give you that -- but this one was far from perfect, or "best" -- technically, there were some really amateur jump-cuts, some shaky camera work, and some strange transitions -- the performances were great & because it was a period-piece, costumes & props had great attention paid to them -- oscar has proved elusive to many white filmmakers too -- martin scorsese has only won one & he began making films when spike lee was in primary school

The only negative inputs about this film to my mind, is that too much focus was put on Malcolms earlier life during his Detroit Red years and to little focus on what happened after he left the Nation of Islam.
And some of the footage of all the riots were not accurate, considering the Watts riots happened after his death for example.

@lukafafrenz Also you have to keep in mind, how Spike Lee struggled with the financing of this film. Had he been given more funds, I am sure he would have been able to add or change several things in the film. But with what he had, he made a damn good movie and Scorsese, who tutored Lee has said this is one of the finest films of the 90s. Also its a commin fact that the Oscars "prefer" Hollywood films and directors and neither Lee or Scorsese consider themselves Hollywood directors. Respect!!

It probably happened, or it may be Spike Lee exercising his creative license , but I see it as a precursor to Malcolm X's death. Someone (we don't know who) warned him after he left the NOI and formed the OAAU, and then carried it out in February, 1965.

Yet you always hear them saying phrases like "allasalaikum" (or whatever) and various Arabic phrases in their prayers. To me, that's uttering mumbo-jumbo in the superstitious belief that these phrases confer validity on their praying, like Catholics at Mass who don't speak Latin. If I were to become Muslim, I'd learn Arabic, if only to read the Koran in its original language.

He's viewed the stolen/missing chapters more than anybody i believe. Allowed only to view them for a few minutes at a time and take no photos or make any copies.
He's also engaged in a battle to make them public, pointing out that the intellectual property, not the paper they're printed on, cannot be owned by a rich lawyer but should be released to the public.

If what you're saying is true, it's really unfortunate that Mr. Marable only gets a limited time to view those chapters. That's an outright shame.

In his final years he made 2 trips to Africa, not 1. Was loved and welcomed wherever he went, often as guest of state.

It probably happened, or it may be Spike Lee exercising his creative license , but I see it as a precursor to Malcolm X's death. Someone (we don't know who) warned him after he left the NOI and formed the OAAU, and then carried it out in February, 1965.
