We had this problem at Westmill Wind Farm on one of our five brand new turbines - turned out the lightling conductor was standing slightly proud of the blade tip - they stopped the machine with the offending blade pointing down and sorted it out with a 'cherry picker' reach platform.
People in the turbine business have minimal respect for nature and aesthetics, else they'd find another line of work. I don't see them as much different that oil & gas wildcatters. They ravage the scenery to make a buck, then leave a small maintenance crew (few local jobs). This is not true "green" energy and it gives that concept a bad name.
@cokefan3 Sorry? Its ALL about the money. Green bills.. These wind turbines would NOT be economical with government subsidizing. So in fact you pay at least twice for the same amount energy. These wind turbines should be taken down the sooner the better.
@Scr1393 That's not how nuclear power plants work. They won't blow up, they'll melt down, and even then we now have an isolation chamber built around each reactor that is made to contain the radiation in the event there is a melt down.
@Scr1393 There have been more windturbine failures than nuclear. Tell me. How many windturbines you need to give as much power as a normal power plant? Yes that many, and you still need that normal powerplant as wind power is nowhere near as reliable. And millions of dollars to subsidize the bloody things.
I say bring them all down and use the money for useful shit.
@flexairz ofc wind turbines fails more, but that doesnt make to much damage, u only lose cash, and with power plan even 1 lil boom can make disaster. and ohh well every1 have their own opinion.
One day one of those stupid things are going to kill someone if it hasn't happened already. Those things disrupt even wild life if installed away from populated areas!

WORLD RECORD: BIGGEST WIND TURBINE
Visit: windturbinecarriedbywheels.weebly.com
ZERO-NOISE from gears and generators since they're sealed underground.
SAVES THE BIRDS AND BATS since the turbines are slow-moving.
DOES NOT NEED TO OCCUPY A WIDER LANDSCAPE since the turbine can be very tall.
MAY BE LOWER-COST since it can use parts of junked trucks and others.
ELUDES HURRICANE FORCE since the blades automatically close.
HELPS THE WIND ENERGY COMPANIES since it is FREE FOR ALL.

Doesn't matter! live with the noise, It's green power ;)

a wind turbine itself costs about 2 million per MW, we are installing 3MW's, averaging around 5-6 million

It could be just brakes working - too strong wind, and it brakes to evade destruction.

I couldn't see anything "broken".

Muslim in a storm = wind turban. They make a sound, too: "Hummmmmmmmmmmmmus!"

I thought these machines sensed something amiss and automatically shut down.

There are some types of wind turbines that are vertical axis - have shown to be 1) super quiet, virtually no sound 2) bird friendly 3) awesome

the high maintenance of turbines means that they will never make any money. they are ugly, need to be subsidized, ruin the landscape, kill birds..
