  • I would luv to go whistlng and fishing with John Prine....we can forgive each other till we both turn blue. John Prine is awesome, and shared some very wonderful words of comic wisdom with us throughout the years, and put it all to good music too! Let's join him in the evan.

  • thanks to John who always keeps me company on road trips... singing to the sky... smiling all the way home... goodnight

  • then i got fired for being scared of bees

  • Buy Direct from OH BOY records

  • John, I'm looking forward to fishing with you on the other side!!! I wish you peace on your porch, time with your wife and kids and lots of fishing!

  • my dad and i go driving all the time listening to john prine. i love this man.

  • reminds me of the tune of "dance, dance, dance" by the steve miller band.

  • The 4 people that disliked this video can kiss my ass. Prine is one of the greats, man! I love this song!

  • Been listening to this ever since I can remember.

  • awesome....

  • "in person and on stage" would be your first great CD

  • A highlight of 2010 Bonnaroo for me!

  • Can go wrong with "lost dogs and mixed blessings"

  • This song describes every crap job I had as a kid growing up in Chicago:

"Made me scrub a parking lot down on my knees/Then I got fired for being scared of bees/And they only paid me 50 cents an hour."

The dark and uncommented-upon side of the "American work ethic."

Love you like a brother, John Prine.

  • thank you JP, thank you

  • I can't whistle but I can fish. You whistle and I'll get us some supper.

  • @maryellynd deal.

  • "Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings" is my favorite Prine Album :)

  • I love to listen to John Prine. He is a living treasure.I believe this old Martin guitar has been with him for a while.Does anyone know if it is a D-28 or D-18? I believe he uses Dean Markley pickups but I may be wrong.

  • @showbert22 Really? None the less, what better day to find something great?!! I'm 27 & I've sang this since I was about 5. If I've got one thing to thank my family for, it's John Prine & leather & woodcarving. Without art, there is nothing to express how we feel....

  • whos chris knight?

as to the best prine- I like his live album

  • My dad got me started listening to Prine a few years ago, and I've loved his music ever since. I've never heard a Prine song I don't like. You were talking about buying albums, you can hear them on his Myspace first if that helps. He's got several on there.

  • curtrocks says instigate a flashback and dance around a campfire to this one.

  • shut your god damn mouth.

    blasphemy.

  • I would not pay two cents to see your friends sing this song.

  • you cant sing a song better then the original artist.

  • .."Shut ... shut ... shut your mouth."

  • I was at the debut concert of this album...he finally said after about 4 encores..I guess I'd better keep singing til we all have had enough..still hasn't happened.....what can cou say...if you are a fan then you know what I'm sayin

  • I Love this song i have most of his songs

  • This was the frist song of his that caught my ear. Back when it was played on the radio. Little did I realize that it was just the "tip of an iceberg" of a monster talent! I wish someone would post a video of John doing "Christmas in Prison". I guess my all time favorite though is "Everything is Cool" with the imagery of a flock of blackbirds as tears from an angel, that speaks to my soul intimately. Love you John!

  • JOHN PRINE LIVE i loved this album

  • The man is a national treasure.

  • International treasure.

  • Magnificent. Top man. Anyone know if a uk tour is on the cards??

  • When someone can make someone else laugh in the first 20 seconds that person has talent of the heart. Great lyrics to this song, great singing and playing too!

  • This song is absolutely amazing. John Prine gives the world amazing and funny songs.

  • I`am a huge Chris Knight fan and thats how I found out about John Prine . He`s pretty awesome, I think I`ll have to buy a Prine CD....What would be a good first Prine CD? anybody?

  • The first John Prine album would be an excellent start. It is entitled "John Prine". Then get another of more recent vintage.

  • The John Prine anthology great days. I got a single cd The Best of John Prime, but it didn't have a lot of the songs I liked.

  • Bruised Orange is an excellent album (cd?). It contains this wonderful song, impeccably sung.

  • yep Brusied Orange is a great album i have the privilage to listen to his early albums on vinyl. thanx Dad

  • @cashfan85 Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings......

  • @Grizzlybobxxx yes, lost dogs and mixed blessings

  • @hippiechic65 I bought that cd in the bargain bin of all places... Now its one of my favs!! Thanx for agreeing.....;)

  • @cashfan85 go for 'bruised orange' one of the finest things in recorded music, my opinion

  • @cashfan85 would buy John Prine's Anthology Album

  • all of them! Make sure you get to see him live...absolutely memorizing!

  • all of them! Make sure you get to see him live...absolutely memorizing! It's like he is playing just for you...

  • @cashfan85 I started with the first two.The second is awesome and includes "The Late John Garfield Blues" "Clocks and Spoons" Diamonds in the Rough" "Take the Star Out of the Window" it's called Diamonds in the Rough.

  • @cashfan85 Great Days

  • @cashfan85 prime prine is a good start its got a little of everything on it.

  • @cashfan85 Bruised Orange!

  • @cashfan85 His self titled first album is definitely his best work, Lyrics don't get any deeper than the words in "Hello in there" and "Far from me"

  • Love his jokes! He must be a very kind man.

  • I know this guy's son.

  • John your the man-Melrose park man

  • i love the fact that he is offering to forgive God! john prine is one of the best song writers to ever live. he is up there with the likes of bob dylan.

  • pretty good!almost as good as fkidder`s video!

  • Loved it! And I'm always impressed with the guitar picking.

  • Whenever I get down and it seems like life is out to get me, I listen to John Prine and smile. Thank you John

  • the best

  • a national treasure.

  • My favorite!

We've discussed this song many times from a family "issues" standpoint.

He makes peace with his dad and whistles and makes plans to go fishing up in heaven ... but first, he has to go over the "issues" one more time :)

How so real, how so honest!

First, how he didn't measure up to his father's expectations, and then how his father didn't measure up to his. This is sooo real.

    Thanks John!!

  • Been playing fish and whistle on my own guitar for many years. Saw him twice in concert. Steve Goodman opened for one of the shows way back when. One of my all time favourites.

  • Love this, thanks for posting!

  • top stuff seen him in liverpool november 07 what a gig could not wipe the illegal smile off my face

  • WOW. John Prine was always on the periphery of my musical interests for some reason(I'm 51),but I just now "got him". Could it have been the record company "dudes" in retrospect ???? I think the mark of a great song is one that is simple but says what it wants to without a lot of fluff or "production". John makes many great songs. 'Course, what do I know,I'm crazy as a loon...(where's my Lithium and cigarettes...)

  • I have that exact same problem with my 20 year old epiphone..damn capo has to be on there just so or the bottom string is muted and the top one buzzes. love Prine, great vid

  • John Prine ALWAYS puts me in a good mood!!! Going to see him live from the first time in October and I can't wait!!!!

  • Great

  • my favorite jp song, and late john garfield blues is good

  • That man can write the song, even if he can't catch fish.

  • Prime Prine!

  • The name of the song is "Fish and Whistle."

  • Thanks. As you can see I made the change.

  • always a pleasure to hear J Prine. Genuine.
