@themachman19691 I apologise because I have only ever known it to be Susan Ann Sulley, Philip Oakey, Joanne Catherall. Mainly cus they went to my parents wedding before they were too famous and also stayed with my aunt in Sheffield up until my cousin was born. In fact Phil had his hand on my aunts belly until contractions started. I also see you have Gary Numans eye as your avatar. Good choice.
This tune shoulda been a hit. I only became aware of it after seeing them live, and then buying Secrets. No tour this Xmas, hope they do one next December

Been a fan since I was a kid (now 22 years old) thought I'd never see them live. Then Evolution in Newcastle came along and my prayers were answered. Reminds me of awesome times. HUMAN LEAGUE!!!!!!
the only problem Phil had was he should have let the girls go an go back to the all male MK1 league - they as a whole would have been revered like kraftwerk (the girls, god love em, could always have come on for certain songs)
@JezJacko.. Musically that would be a great idea. But most people dont even know there was Human League before the Dare album. This is why among hard core electronic music fans Human League is not given as much respect as Kraftwerk.. Some people would say the real Human League, after the split, has always been Heaven 17. In fact Oakey never performed live and couldn't play any instruments when the Human League (Heaven 17's Ware & Marsh) first hired him.
This song sounded great when he sang it live. I saw them in Anahiem, CA in 2003 and they were awesome! Met them afterwords and Phil was great! Super sweet and very cool with me while we chatted. And he looked just as great in person as he did in this video. I told him that too! :)
These youngs kids that are coming up now doesn't know a thing about the 80s music. The 80s has way better music groups than the current ones now.I always love Human Leangue and any other 80s music groups and you never get bored by listening to them.I am 30yr old and i know what real music sounds like power to the 80s.
I hate to say this because I know alot of people love Jo & Sue, but Phil could do without them. He's a genius and his vocals are more than enough. I'm not saying they are horrible because "Dare" was a fantastic album that couldnt have been done without them, but they didn't bring anything to this album (Secrets) that I liked..
Annu mirabilis 2001: On the synth pop side, the legends release comeback albums (Depeche Mode, New Order and Human League). On the garage/punk side, amazing revivalist debuts (Strokes, White Stripes, BRMC). Together they set the stage for an exciting decade of indie, new pop and new wave revival!
Considering the treatment the business showed them as of late, I think they deserve knighthoods for services to music... for sticking to the business they and their fans still love.
Too right the charts system is rubbish just a 40yrs old music executives idea of what music schoolgirls will buy! sad really sad! the best sink and the crap rises to the top !
Sadly yes... probably one of the most longest standing acts from the UK ever... and Radio 1 decided to give them no air-play whatsoever as they were not "in" at the time...
Now look at the situation... Radio 1 complains about the manufactured tripe that THEY themselves promoted back then!
wonderful little tracks. it's such a shame it's taken nine long years to get them signed to another record label. i'm sure the new album will be a cracker!
i thought that phil was the original singer. it was two of the keyboard players who left in the early 80's, one went on to form heaven 17.
when they left, the band was about to go on tour in europe, the surviving members had to rework the songs, thats when phil spotted the girls in a sheffield nightclub and asked them to join the band as backing singers for the tour. he had to get permission from thier parents because they were still at school
this track and the cd it came from should have been much bigger than it was. IMHO, a true return to form. I remember picking up the cd while on holiday in Spain and it never left the cd player for the whole two weks.
Agreed, and they should also re-release the album it's from - 'Secrets'. A truly great album denied of its true potential because of the record label, Papillon, going into liquidation around the time of 'Secrets' release with subsequent lack of promotion. Most people I've played 'Secrets' to can't believe it went so unnoticed. It was pop music's loss, but thankfully copies of it can still be found. Seek it out and you will find the Human League magic in abundance. :-)
You are so right, it's a brilliant album. Anyone who likes this song and hasn't heard the album should get a copy NOW. I guarantee if you like this song you'll love that album.
@eletricmayham OH MY GOD A WHOLE NINE YEARS!!! believe me, they haven't grown in popularity since 2001, as unfortunate as that is. that said, they're better known as an 80s group anyways, and for some reason, those songs don't seem ancient to anyone. 2001 WASN'T, in fact, ages ago. unless you're like, eight or something, i don't see any point to your argument that this song came out nine years ago- that's not forever.
@eletricmayham dude what's with all the caps? haha, are you trying to kid yourself? i mean, they've gotta be one of my top three favorite bands, but none of my friends- or their parents- have ever even heard of them. i'm fourteen. unless you live in the U.K. or something. then i can't really be sure of their popularity. i imagine it would be higher.
@eletricmayham yeah they actually are xD. in the states, anyways. you have some grammar problems, too. thanks for shutting the caps off, though.
(if you don't believe me about the one-hit wonder thing, show me their other songs that hit it to the top of the charts in the usa. like, i want proof.)
@eletricmayham ...that's ONE HIT. this wasn't a hit lol. not in the us anyways. so as far as you're telling me, and as far as i've ever been concerned, they're a one-hit wonder.
@eletricmayham hm. that's not all that high to be totally recognized. but. okay, three-ish hits is alright. that's still not very popular, though. not now, anyways. i wouldn't say "popular still", those are all older songs. they were popular at one time, maybe, but not now, so don't go saying that they're still popular.
@acrowwing and so do a lot of WONDERFUL underground techno bands. no disrespect, i mean mainstream, haha. i think my original argument got lost somehow, besides, i was saying that nine years ago wasn't ages ago, so, technically, there's no need to republish this song ALREADY; i was responding to boywondfw's comment, and someone else started arguing with me... so.

Most of music today is pre-packaged contrived bullshit
just awful
Human League and other british new waver;s set the stage
and were so lucky to be the pioneers of this awesome sound
lived thru the 80's and enjoyed and experienced this great time
and musical era I believe that will never ever be replicated or duplicated
ever again-feel so bad for my kids for the crap music that is available to
them today if you can even call it that-

The "thumping techno backbeat" is a bit cheesy, but Phil sounds lovely.

It wasnt a hit because UK national BBC radio refused to play list it. They didnt think a band of three 40 year olds was 'down with the kids'

BBC radio is crap, you want a better selection of music from all different bands then go over to independent radio.

That`s the world we live in. However, quality always prevails. German/Dutch singer Heesters is still live performing at age 104 !
